NFL Week 1 2022 picks

Football is back, along with our effort to make sense of what will happen during the various football games.

It’s the weekly picks item, with MDS and yours truly doing battle, picking each and every game.

I think I won last year. I can’t remember, actually. I assume someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

Whether I acknowledge the correction is a different issue.

Hopefully, my picks for Week One will need little correction. We disagree on four of 16 games.

For all picks, scroll away.

Bills (-2.5) at Rams

MDS’s take: The Bills are the preseason Super Bowl favorites, and in Week One they’re the favorites to beat the defending Super Bowl champs. And yet I have a feeling that Matthew Stafford is going to out-duel Josh Allen as the Rams win.

MDS’s pick: Rams 27, Bills 20.

Florio’s take: Long flight, high expectations, hot night, great opponent. Also, Sean McVay is 5-0 in Week One. Hang the banner, and chalk up a W for the guys from L.A.

Florio’s pick: Rams 30, Bills 24.

Saints (-5.5) at Falcons

MDS’s take: The Falcons’ offense is going to be better than people expect, but the Saints will still win this one in a close and exciting game.

MDS’s pick: Saints 33, Falcons 31.

Florio’s take: The post-Payton Saints get off to a good start against the overmatched Falcons. We’ll see whether it lasts.

Florio’s pick: Saints 24, Falcons 17.

49ers (-7) at Bears

MDS’s take: I’m not sold on either Trey Lance or Justin Fields, but I think the 49ers will eke out a defensive struggle.

MDS’s pick: 49ers 13, Bears 10.

Florio’s take: The Bears don’t have the talent to compete with an elite team, especially not right out of the gates.

Florio’s pick: 49ers 24, Bears 14.

Steelers (+6.5) at Bengals

MDS’s take: Mitchell Trubisky is going to have a better season than people think for the Steelers, but not so good a season that I expect him to outplay Joe Burrow in Week One.

MDS’s pick: Bengals 24, Steelers 21.

Florio’s take: The Steelers are always dangerous as the hunted. They’re even more dangerous as the hunter.

Florio’s pick: Steelers 23, Bengals 20.

Eagles (-4) at Lions

MDS’s take: The Lions look to me like an improved team — but probably the kind of improved team that loses a lot of close games instead of losing blowouts.

MDS’s pick: Eagles 21, Lions 20.

Florio’s take: The Eagles have high expectations. The best way to begin living up to them is to beat an inferior team.

Florio’s pick: Eagles 27, Lions 20.

Patriots (+3.5) at Dolphins

MDS’s take: I’m not as sold on the Dolphins’ new-look offense as some are, and I think Bill Belichick is going to have some defensive wrinkles in store that help the Patriots win a low-scoring game.

MDS’s pick: Patriots 16, Dolphins 13.

Florio’s take: The Patriots struggle in Miami when they have the better team. How will they do when they don’t?

Florio’s pick: Dolphins 27, Patriots 20.

Ravens (-7) at Jets

MDS’s take: It looks like it’s going to be a long season for the Jets, and a rebound season for the Ravens.

MDS’s pick: Ravens 31, Jets 17.

Florio’s take: Joe Flacco isn’t elite. The rest of his team isn’t, either.

Florio’s pick: Ravens 27, Jets 17.

Jaguars (+2.5) at Commanders

MDS’s take: The Jaguars have to be better than they were in the last two disastrous seasons, but the Commanders will win a close game in Week One.

MDS’s pick: Commanders 14, Jaguars 13.

Florio’s take: Just as Carson Wentz finally puts last year’s season-ending debacle in Jacksonville behind him, here come the Jaguars.

Florio’s pick: Jaguars 24, Commanders 20.

Browns (+1.5) at Panthers

MDS’s take: Baker Mayfield gets his revenge. In the long run, perhaps the Browns’ decision to move on from Mayfield will be vindicated, but in the short term, it was an ugly offseason for Cleveland that will be followed by an ugly start to the regular season.

MDS’s pick: Panthers 23, Browns 20.

Florio’s take: Baker Mayfield may not have said he wants to f–k up the Browns. But he definitely wants to. And he will.

Florio’s pick: Panthers 27, Browns 21.

Colts (-7) at Texans

MDS’s take: Both of these teams look better than last year, but I have more faith in Matt Ryan than I do in Davis Mills to play well in the opener.

MDS’s pick: Colts 24, Texans 20.

Florio’s take: Matt Ryan may not be a five-year answer, but he’s the best quarterback they’ve had since Andrew Luck retired. The Texans, meanwhile, continue to be in the midst of a rebuild with no deadline for completion.

Florio’s pick: Colts 31, Texans 20.

Giants (+5.5) at Titans

MDS’s take: The Titans have had a strange offseason for a team that was the No. 1 seed in the AFC last year, looking more like a rebuilding team than a team that’s trying to get to the Super Bowl. I still think they’re better than the Giants, though.

MDS’s pick: Titans 20, Giants 17.

Florio’s take: The Titans lost at home in Week One last year, 38-13 to the Cardinals. Mike Vrabel surely hasn’t forgotten that, and he surely hasn’t let his players forget it, either.

Florio’s pick: Titans 27, Giants 10.

Packers (-1.5) at Vikings

MDS’s take: The Packers should cruise to their fourth straight NFC North title and get it started with a road win against the second-best team in the division.

MDS’s pick: Packers 28, Vikings 21.

Florio’s take: The Vikings will instantly be better than they were last year. The Packers may eventually be better, too. It will take them some time to get there, however.

Florio’s pick: Vikings 28, Packers 24.

Chiefs (-6) at Cardinals

MDS’s take: I like the Chiefs to win this one big, with Patrick Mahomes putting on a show and Kyler Murray struggling to keep up.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 35, Cardinals 20.

Florio’s take: Too many people are sleeping on the Chiefs. Here comes the football world’s first wake-up call.

Florio’s pick: Chiefs 35, Cardinals 24.

Raiders (+3) at Chargers

MDS’s take: The rematch of last year’s Sunday night finale will end differently, as this time it’s the Chargers winning a close one.

MDS’s pick: Chargers 31, Raiders 30.

Florio’s take: The Chargers have a knack for seeing things go sideways. For now, though, they’re good enough to get off on the right foot by holding serve at home against a division rival.

Florio’s pick: Chargers 34, Raiders 30.

Buccaneers (-2.5) at Cowboys

MDS’s take: Tom Brady may have taken a long leave of absence during training camp, but when the games count for real, he’s going to turn it on and beat the Cowboys.

MDS’s pick: Buccaneers 27, Cowboys 20.

Florio’s take: Tom Brady has only played once before in AT&T Stadium. The Cowboys will be happy to never see him there again.

Florio’s pick: Buccaneers 31, Cowboys 28,

Broncos (-6.5) at Seahawks

MDS’s take: Russell Wilson will get a win in his return to Seattle, but it’s not going to be as easy as some think, as the Seahawks’ defense will prove to be better than expected.

MDS’s pick: Broncos 17, Seahawks 14.

Florio’s take: The Seahawks lack the horses to keep up with the Broncos and Russell Wilson.

Florio’s pick: Broncos 28, Seahawks 14.

  1. Good point, Mike. Vikings are always best right around the time they win the Off-Season Super Bowl every year before sliding quietly into irrelevancy by midseason.

49ers are not an elite team.
    _________________________

49ers have a top 5 roster in football. Is that an average team?

  3. Bengals beat the Steelers pretty handily last year both times. Steelers still can’t stop the run. Trubisky will be adequate, but I think Bengals win big at home.

  4. Raiders in one of the biggest games of the season on day 1. I am going to need some Xanax to make it through this season. And a lot of rum.

  5. “MDS’s take: The Lions look to me like an improved team — but probably the kind of improved team that loses a lot of close games instead of losing blowouts.”
    ________________________________________

Umm, did you watch them last year? or even check the scores? They lost a LOT of close games last year.

  6. Good pick, Florio. Bengals will get to see what the season is like being a SB loser. Ravens and Steelers are still the class of the division.

  7. Micah Parsons, meet Tom Brady.

Mr Brady, your retirement press conference is set for halftime.

  8. Denny Green is the only Vikings coach to reach the playoffs his first year and Kevin O’Connell is no Denny Green.

  9. Raiders 34 Chargers 27, ends with a Nate Hobbs pick with the chargers driving at the end to tie it up

  10. I just don’t see Tom Brady being as successful this year. Hope I am wrong, but with his spouse issues due him playing another season, I’m not sure how focused he will be. Dallas might surprise Tampa.

  11. Come on, MDS, do you really think The Patriots can walk away with a win? They were swept by Tua last year with just Waddle. This year the Dolphins have an improved running game, improved o-line, and Hill. There is no way Steve Belichick’s defense can cover Waddle, Hill, and Gesicki and stop the running game simultaneously. Add to this NE does not have the offense fire-power to answer back in points. The #1 WR in NE was the #2/3 often hurt WR n Miami last season.

Good pick, Florio. Bengals will get to see what the season is like being a SB loser. Ravens and Steelers are still the class of the division.
    ————————-
You are half right. The Ravens are the class of the division.

  13. I love my Eagles but the game vs. Detroit will be closer than some think. Both teams had great drafts and will be greatly improved IMO. Detroit is sick of being in the cellar and Philly needs to prove they can become elite. I think Philly wins but if I was betting the spread I’d take the 4 points and Detroit.

  14. Florio’s take: The Bears don’t have the talent to compete with an elite team, especially not right out of the gates.
    ———————————————
SF is hardly ‘elite’. Bears will cover the points and Lance will be exposed.

  15. Seahawks’ defense turn the narrative on its ear with an unlikely win over Wilson and the Broncos. Cue up the video on repeat of Wilson saying “Go Hawks!”

  16. Bengals smoke the Steelers
Seahawks know Wilson’s weakness, eke by the Broncos
Miami embarrasses Belichick’s D late in a close one

    _____________

Only in your delusional head. The Raiders are going to finish last in that division and it starts on Sunday. From scandals to terrible personnel decisions the Raiders are cooked!

  18. I’m a bit worried about this Raiders game, the Chargers might be unusually fired up because of their previous match-up.

  19. Saints over Falcons – Should be a good game but the weakness of the Falcons defense will contribute to the Saints win…

Panthers over Browns – Panthers may be a surprise team this season and the Browns have drama…

Bucs over Cowboys – another good game but The Bucs are more stable in more key positions..

  20. I hate to say it, but I think the Packers lose. They didn’t play their starters the entire preseason, just like last year, and they got clobbered because of lack of timing, mental mistakes, and generally looking like they hadn’t seen live action in nine months.

Some people just don’t learn from past experience.

  21. Raiders will win big against the overrated Chargers. I have to also laugh at people who question the Raiders personnel moves, all I can say is what an organization Mark Davis is building!

  22. Chargers over Raiders is a lock.

    Bucs over Cowboys

Sorry Lions fans, you’re not beating the Eagles because you think they lost “close games’ last season, LOLOLOL!

  23. Raiders turnstile OL vs Mack and Bosa….enough said.

Not to mention, the Raiders defense is terrible. Herbert will shred that bottom 10 D.

    Chargers win easily.

  24. Monday night might as well be the Super Bowl for Seattle. Look for Russell to sail the ball high for a couple of first quarter picks.

49ers are not an elite team.

    ———-

Maybe so, but they have been one of the final 4 teams 2 of the last 3 years, so their results have been elite. And that was with Jimmy G, who has stayed there. So I would expect them to continue to be competitive.

    ———–

I really don’t think a game 1 lost for the Raiders is a big deal. 4-2 in the division will get the job done this year in the AFC West. Split with KC and LAC and beat Denver twice. If the raiders can do that the division will come down to how the Raiders do against the rest of the league.

    ———-

Don’t believe anything you read regarding Brady’s off field issues. No one knows. Brady won’t let anything affect his on field performance. He will be focused.

That said, Dallas can beat Tampa just because they are pretty good and Brady also could show his age at any moment and he doesn’t have the Gronk connection to depend on as of now.

I won’t be shocked if Dallas wins, but it won’t have anything to do with Brady’s personal life if they do.

  32. Rams over Bills. Close but not going against the champs at home in the opener
Cowboys over Bucs easily. Tommy pouts and throws stuff.
Dolphins over NE in a low scoring game
    Chiefs big
    Panthers big
    Vikings close

No bigs, the in-over-his-head-rookie coach in Minnesota didn’t play his starters in preseason either.

  34. Belicheck again will outsmart everyone and once again fans of opposing teams will learn the hard way that they don’t know as much about football as they think! Go Pats!

TB had some memorable encounters with Ray Lewis. Guarantee you he isn’t intimidated by Parsons.

  36. Am I in an alternate universe? Did I really only see one comment about the New England Patriots?

  37. Bills lose & Pats win…..Jets are gonna Jet…..
1st step in a long season but a very important step it will be!!
1-0 in the division while the other 3 are 0-1
Bill knows the importance of this game & THAT will be the difference between coaches…. Veteran VS Rookie

  38. I’m wondering what color the sky is in MDS’s world. Sorry, but there’s no way the Mariota-led Falcons score 31 against the Saints defense. My take is that Florio is much closer with his take on that game. Their tackles are revolving doors for Davenport and especially Jordan, who owns McGary.

    11216Thank You

    ——————

Their OL stinks as well. TJ Watt still doesn’t know how to stop the run their aging DTs are on the back end.

    Should be fun!

  40. This will probably tick off my fellow Vikings fans (well, at least more than I probably usually do), but I have a hard time seeing a Vikings’ team implementing new offensive and defensive systems beating an experienced Packer team with a top 10 D and Aaron Rodgers. I sure hope I’m wrong and am mocked repeatedly for my skepticism (well, at least more than I am normally mocked).

  41. Bills 41
    Rams 13

The Bills are going to scare some people tonight with how good they can be this season. They have been waiting the entire offseason to unleash their frustrations on the rest of the NFL. This is going to be ugly for the Rams.

  42. The Packer own the NFC North – just like they always have.
    …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
*Always*is a strong word. But hey, enjoy your last year before your team sinks back into irrelevancy.

  43. Those of you that think Dallas wins easily are forgetting that Dallas only has one credible receiver and a rookie stepping in for Tyrone Smith.

  44. Platinum Picks of the Week: (1) Browns (+1.5) over the Panthers. Brissett will manage the game well and Chubb and Hunt will combine for more than 150 yards. Meanwhile, the Panthers have a new OC and a new quarterback. It’ll take a few weeks for the offense to jell and be effective and Cleveland has a good defense. Browns 24, Panthers 20. (2) Buccaneers (-2.5) over the Cowboys. There are some pressing questions about Tampa’s offense, but there’s no doubt about the defense; it will be elite. Vita Vea, Shaq Barrett, Devin White, et. al., will embarrass the Dallas offense. The Cowboys will score a touchdown in garbage time to make it respectable. Buccaneers 31, Dallas 21.

Good pick, Florio. Bengals will get to see what the season is like being a SB loser. Ravens and Steelers are still the class of the division.

    ===

Those two teams have certainly set the standard for consistency in the division, but the Bengals went 4-0 against them last season, and demolished them in all four games, going on to make it further in the postseason than either of the other teams has in a decade. I’d say there’s not really anything for them to boast about yet. They’ll have to re-earn it.

  46. Should be fun!

I bet it reminds you of the Bills game to end the season…good times …can’t wait.

  47. Ravens open the season by unloading on the Jets. This game will be over before halftime.

    Ravens 38
    Jets 13

Saints are your Week 1 Survivor pick.

  48. I think this season will be interesting in the AFC North. I’ll never count out the Steelers, especially when overlooked. Their D is legit. The Ravens are healthy again for the most part, and supposedly going back to their 2019 2 and 3 TE sets that gave the league fits. These sets will make the Cover 0 Nickel and Dime packages that gave them fits last season tough to use. In 2019 when teams tried that, the Ravens ran it down their throat. The Browns appear to be riding this us against the world wave. The Bengals are super talented but got a lot of luck last year with health and schedule. They are a young team and I’m curious to see how they perform as the hunted playing a first place schedule. Should be fun.

  49. I don’t know who will win, but it seems to me that the teams facing the most pressure to win, for whom losing would create the most immediate problems, include the Bengals, Eagles, Ravens, Cardinals, Chargers, and Bucs.

Maybe division losses are always the worst, but along with those the teams above seem to have the least margin of error if they intend to be perceived as having a good year.

So Florio ranks the Packers 5th and the Vikings 22nd and that same week he picks the Vikings to beat the Packers?
    /////////////////////////////////////////////////
Well, there are many more variables than rank involved here. Home field, the first game of the season, and the loss of Devante Adams just to mention three. And also the ranking takes into consideration the final positioning from last season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Packers drop out of the top 10 after the first two games.

  51. IF the Panthers win it won’t be because of Baker – it will be because the Browns can’t stop the run – McCaffery.

IF the Browns win it will be because they get out to a big lead and hold it at the end. Baker will get the ball in his hands with a chance to win it only to throw a pick or turn the ball over at the end something he’s done 9 out of 11 times with the Browns

  52. The Bills are not going to be as good this year as they were last year. I have been hearing too much from their locker room about how they were cheated vs Chiefs.

The reality is that they lost that game because their defense couldn’t stop KC at the end of the game, or in OT.

  53. Fins 23 Pats 16 Hate to say but I see an ugly turnover filled loss for week 1.

Rams 30 Bills 20 Close game until the 4th where Allen throws a pick six to Ramsey

Bucs 38 Cowboys 23 Get ready for a beat down in Dallas thanks to Fournette and passing from Brady to Godwin the line won’t be an issue this week for the Bucs.

  54. Too bad the Pack has all those injuries, otherwise it would have been a close game.

    JJ=2TD’s, AT=1TD, DC =1TD That’s Vikings 28 GB 17

  55. The Vikings will choke in their Super Bowl just like they do every year, Packers win 34-17.

  56. Baker will be over hyped, overthrow a receiver, get pissed and mentally become Jack Tatum and injure his right shoulder this time.

  57. The Vikings defense lost them 8 one score games last season. Historically bad team for giving up points to end the half and games. If their new defense is only mediocre it should result in 4 more wins this year. Not saying they win the division. But if they go 12-5, I’m not saying they won’t win the division either. Oh, and their offense? It was already pretty good, with a head coach that apparently hated trying to take a two score lead.
