New 49ers quarterback Trey Lance will have one fewer weapon available in his debut as the full-time starter.

Tight end George Kittle is expected to miss the regular-season opener at Chicago with a groin injury, per multiple reports. The San Francisco Chronicle was the first to say so.

Kittle, listed as questionable, had been healthy through training camp and the preseason. The injury first surfaced on Monday. He didn’t practice on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.

Based on the team’s unofficial depth chart, Charlie Woerner slides into the starting lineup. Ross Dwelley moves up to No. 2.

Woerner, a sixth-round pick in 2020, has appeared in 33 regular-season games. He started three times in 2021. He has eight career catches, for 88 yards.

  1. See you week 3 versus the Broncos George. Niners should beat the Bears and Seahawks fairly easily.

  2. Hot Take Prediction: 49ers miss postseason, QB situation turns into a dumpster fire, Shanny fired by week 14.

  3. Not a big loss for Clara other than being a blocker because it’s unlikely Lance will be allowed to pass the ball and will be relegated to handing off until he shows he can read a defense and/or improve his accuracy. Smells like an upset is brewing. Go Bears!

  4. Word is there was a sudden gale wind in Chicago. It didn’t come from Lake Michigan but rather it was caused by Lance and Shanahan hyperventilating when they heard Street Clothes Kittle was indeed relegated to cheerleader today.
