Russell Wilson wasn’t bothered by the boos

On Monday night, former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson heard it from current Seahawks fans, who booed him early and often when he returned as the quarterback of the Broncos.

After the game, Wilson was asked whether the noises absorbed by his ears got under his skin.

“No, it didn’t bother me,” Wilson said. “This is a hostile environment. It always has been. I didn’t expect them to give a round of applause every once in a while, you know. So I think that — like I would say, I gave everything I had, every day here. Every day. Anybody that says anything else, they’re completely wrong. I gave everything I had, every day. So I know that for a fact. Like I said, I have some amazing teammates on the other side of that field that I love to death and gave everything I had to them; they gave everything they had to me. God brought me somewhere else. I’m here in Denver. I’m excited where we’re going. So I’m just grateful. I give the glory to God because he’s given me the gift of playing this game.”

Wilson exits Seattle possibly for the last time (the Broncos won’t definitely play there again until 2030, but could return sooner) with fond memories, even if he didn’t get a win.

The real question is whether the way the game he lost will leave a mark. In Super Bowl XLIX, a fateful late-game decision lingered for a long time, but in that case Wilson kept the ball in his hands. This time, the head coach opted to kick a 64-yard field goal in lieu of trusting Wilson to gain five yards, with three time outs and plenty more than long enough to get the ball close enough for something with a higher percentage of success than (based on the kicker’s history of 60-plus-yard field goals) 12.5.

  1. Yes he was. He subscribes to the Brady petty school.

He’ll talk about it next time he comes to town. Just watch.

  2. He made tens of millions of dollars playing in Seattle. He will make over 150 million playing in Denver. He will hang them up with over 200 million dollars in the bank. Don’t think he’ll care too much about the boo birds.

  3. Wrong decision to kick. You don’t bring a QB in, drop all that money on them, to take the ball out of their hands with 5yds to gain, all TOS, etc….

    THATs what he’s there for

  4. What a classless set of fans in Seattle. Booing Wilson was disgusting and you all deserve all of the losing seasons that’s to come.

  5. I’m no R Wilson fan,… but I was very surprised to see the Nastygrams and the Boooing for Russell from the fans. I thought it was classless. The guy gave you Seattle fans a lot of joy over the years.
I’m a GB guy and even Favre got mixed cheers along with some Boos when he came back as a Viking.

The Seahawks are ahead of Santa Clara….

  7. Its called POETIC JUSTICE .. Seattle’s seen its share of superstars leaving mid-career, mostly Mariners, so it was great that Russ heard the boos after his ego and selfishness outgrew the TEAM concept .. Then he loses by poor coaching and to his old back-up, GENO right out of the gate .. RW3 deserves a little humble-pie and seeing the Magic was still Seaside, and NOT on his side like he thought it was all those years is priceless .. all the while SEATTLE gets to turn the page and start a new era with a big foundational WIN on the Nat’l stage .. & the cherry on top is seeing another young superstar, Julio Rodriguez, commit long-term to the CITY .. BOOM !!

That was unanimous boos from what I recall. As it should have been.

    This was moderate by comparison.

  9. The crowd was 50/50 at most. Media is way overhyping the boos because they talked about Russell’s triumphant return for months and then ended up looking like fools.

    Go HAWKS

He’ll get his cheers when they retire his jersey.

Russ went from a guy that was pretty easy to root for, to being a total diva. He was more of a Brand than a person anyone could relate to at the end. Its one of the more bizarre things I’ve seen in any sport.

Junior forced his way out of town, and hosed the Mariners in doing so. And he never won anything meaningful. Even he was more revered and respected than Russ.

Fandom is very personal. Russ just isn’t universally beloved up here the way past legends have been in other cities.

  11. Read paragraph in the article starting with “No it didn’t bother me” Russ said I, 13 times
Amazing, it’s all about him. Always has been.

  12. Russ went from a team first guy to a me first guy over the years and those in Seattle witnessed it first hand.

Sorry, he’s not the enemy just like any other QB who comes to play the Hawks.

And BTW, he did get to 2 SBs, winning one and losing one, but that defense had a lot to do with it. That includes the second NFC Championship holding the Packers to 22 points and Aaron to 178 yards passing despite 4 Wilson picks.
