Mike McCarthy wants a smarter, more conservative Cowboys offense for Cooper Rush

With Dak Prescott injured, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said today that he wants his offense to play the kind of football that doesn’t put too much pressure on the inexperienced backup, Cooper Rush.

McCarthy said today that offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has been drawing up an offense all year that would play to Prescott’s strengths, but that now Moore and the rest of the offense will need to shift to put Rush in a better position as he prepares to start a game for just the second time in his career on Sunday against the Bengals.

“At the end of the day, Kellen and the offensive staff have been working on this since April — longer than April, but working with the players since April. So we’ve just got to trust what we’ve built and we’ve got to adjust when we have change in the lineup, and we definitely are working through that and we want to make sure we’re helping, but maybe not being as conservative as you’d like to be. Let’s be honest: In Kellen’s time as a coordinator, he’s been able to play very, very aggressive. But we’re in a phase right now that we’ve got to be a little smarter in certain situations, and that’s all part of growing as a play caller,” McCarthy said.

As soon as McCarthy said the words “be a little smarter,” Twitter lit up with accusations that McCarthy was throwing Moore under the bus and saying that his play calling hadn’t been smart. But in context, it’s clear that McCarthy wasn’t blaming Moore, but merely acknowledging the reality that the Cowboys have to be cautious not to put too much on Rush’s shoulders.

With Rush taking over an offense built around Prescott, the Cowboys have some major adjustments to make. McCarthy, Moore, the rest of the coaching staff and the rest of the team all play a part in making sure the offense can still function, even if it’s unrealistic to think Rush can play at Prescott’s level.

  1. Dallas’ coaching staff is the most under achieved in the league. Without Dak they are done! Say hello to Sean Payton.

  2. I don’t think it’s unrealistic to think Rush can play at Dak’s level. Dak’s level isn’t that great. But the Cowboys’ offense will now look like Jason Garrett’s and we know what the result will be.

  3. With no receivers (lamb not exactly living up to a #1 receiver) and no O-line it really doesn’t matter. The only last chip to fall is if Jerry gives McCarthy a pass for losing bad or does he can him in a few weeks. Looks like McCarthy is starting to blame everyone else for the ineptness of the team.

  4. I often wonder why teams don’t get back up quarterbacks with similar skill sets as their starters.

  5. “Mike McCarthy wants a smarter, more conservative Cowboys offense for Cooper Rush”.

Has a chance to happen if he submits his resignation effective TODAY.

  6. Coach Jones told me we “we’ve got to be a little smarter in certain situations”

    So that’s that….

  7. McCarthy and the Cowboys are as cooked as you can get. They might as well tank for the best draft pick.

  8. “inexperienced backup” How long has Cooper Rush been with the Cowboys over the years?
If he does not have a handle on their system by now, then why is he still on the team?

  9. I hate when people say at the end of the day. Not a very good way to communicate and a terrible cliche’

  10. His offense is already as predictable as the sun rising in the East, if he gets more conservative everyone in the stadium will know what play is coming.

  11. “Kellen Moore has been drawing up an offense all year that would play to Prescott’s strengths…”

So 9 months of prep for the first game of the year, and that was playing to Daks strengths against the Bucs? The only team in the entire league to not score a touchdown. Fantastic.

  12. I love when the Boys have any drama. America wins when the Cowboys stink we can all be happy for a while. I see them being maybe 4-13 they looked awful with Dakota in the QB spot.

  13. If smarter means being like the last play at the end of last season, the Cowboys are doomed. Poorly concieved, poorly practiced and poorly executed. And with everyone in the organization pointing the finger of blame at everyone and everything else. Smarter means accountability and learning from their mistakes. Hard to do when constantly patting themselves on the back.

  14. No, McCarthy didn’t throw Kellen Moore under the bus. Moore jumps under the bus on his own. Way too pass-happy. The offensive line is already banged up–two backups on Prescott’s blind side and Tony Pollard is only vaguely aware that RBs can participate in pass blocking. Bad wide receiver corps with James Washington (a third wide receiver, a best) and Michael Gallup hurt, leaving Lamb to be perpetually double-covered. Even if Prescott’s healthy, they would be smarter to be fairly conservative and try to win low-scoring games while avoiding bad down-and-distance situations and turnovers. But Moore wants 50+ pass attempts.

  15. The Cowboys are almost as disorganized and in shambles like the Raiders. Just a shame how these goofy owners just keep their teams in the dumpster fire.

  16. They got 99 problems – dumbing down the offense solves none of them. And the defense! – good grief. Diggs couldn’t tackle a slow moving plastic bag.

  17. McCarthy will quickly vault himself to the top of the Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach wishlist.

  18. Not convinced Payton is heir apparent in Big ‘D’ if McCarthy is canned.

Him and Bill Parcells are tight and I’m sure the Big Tuna has filled him in about Jerruh.

  19. Every local Dallas fan is ready for this season to end so we can start talking about our top 10 pick and who the next coach is.

  20. We coulda had Dan Campbell. At least that would have given us hope. Something to look forward to. Jerrah hired McCarthy cuz he always beat the Cowboys. Duh! You had Garrett. That’s the only reason he always beat you.

    ==========

Payton will want complete control of the football operation, as Parcells had.

I don’t think Jerrah will give that to him.
