Brian Flores had other opportunities to coach, chose the Steelers

It’s been presumed that former Dolphins coach Brian Flores had no opportunities to keep working in the NFL, after daring to advance his legal rights by filing a lawsuit against the league and several of its teams, and that the Steelers threw him a lifeline. That presumption may not be accurate.

In a new interview with Mark Kaboly of TheAthletic.com, Pittsburgh’s senior defensive assistant/linebackers coach said he had opportunities to coach elsewhere before choosing the Steelers.

Flores seems to be very happy with his selection.

“It’s been great, a lot of fun,” Flores told Kaboly. “There is a lot of conversation and a lot of creative ideas, thoughts. It has been a great experience so far, and I’m excited about those moments when I get to sit in those meetings. I am learning a lot, and it has been a great experience for me. I would like to think that I have been in some good places and around some good coaches. Coach [Mike Tomlin], [defensive coordinator Teryl Austin] take a back seat to none of them.”

Flores has indeed been around a lot of great coaches. Including the greatest of them all in Bill Belichick.

One thing Flores has developed is a strong attitude regarding punctuality of his players.

“Early is on time, on time is late,” Flores told Kaboly. “There is a lot for us to have to accomplish in a short period of time, and that minute of information might be the difference it takes to make a play or not.”

He’s right. And making that one play in that one game can be the difference in winning or losing a game. And that win or loss, when Week 18 rolls around, can be the difference between making the playoffs or winning the division or getting a better spot on the playoff tree.

Flores gets a chance to give the Steelers an edge in making a key play in a key spot on Sunday, when his long-time team comes to town. He’s a not-so-secret secret weapon for the Steelers, who currently are 2.5-point underdogs against the Patriots. For some reason.

  1. If Belichick is the greatest ever, why isnt he even in the top 10 over the past couple of years?!

  2. And somehow an underwhelming coach like Jonathan Gannon remains Defensive Coordinator of the Eagles after getting 4 Head Coaching interviews this off-season. Make it make sense without saying his limited options has nothing to do with systemic racism in the hiring practice, nepotism and privilege and/or retaliation for exposing the Dolphins organization. Other coaches wouldn’t begin to consider bringing him in because they know deep down he’s a better HC than they are.

  3. As much as I want the Pats to lose, I want Flores to have that defense get fleeced. He is a linebacker coach, he shouldn’t be in the media anymore.
I bet when all the dust settles the players that report to him dislike him. Not one single player from Miami had one good word to say about him. Not even players that no longer play for Miami.

  4. I think Brady having success in Tampa has put a stench of doubt on the claim that BB is the greatest coach ever.

  5. While Flores was suing his previous employer for millions It was obvious many of the other owners were lining up to hire him. Sure, who wouldn’t want that.

Good lord, what world do you people live in?

He won Exec of the Year last year and is the only coach to lead a rookie QB to 7 straight wins, an NFL record. Read it multiple times if you need to.

He also undressed Brady on national tv, as predicted, and Mac Jones outplayed Brady. Read it again if you need to. That right there proves NE made the righ move for the upcoming decade.

He has the right to rebuild his team the right way for long term sustainability. This isn’t fantasy football or a video game.

NE will be very good for many years to come and Tampa won’t be.

Only in our upside down world is long term strategic growth a bad thing.

Maybe owners who do things the right way (with professional ethics and personal integrity) have no fear of being sued by their former employees.

  8. I’m sure the fact that the Steelers are the most disgustingly woke team in the NFL had nothing to do with his decision to join them.

  9. I can’t think of one thing Flores has alleged so far that has been proven untrue. And all of his statements have been made under the pains and penalties of perjury unlike the NFL who’s statements have been press releases with no legal effect.

And yet Brady and the Bucs won the game…..the only thing that actually matters

Take off your BB blinders. As for your “predictions”, history has not been kind to you

  11. Once this season ends and a dozen teams are either looking for a new Head Coach, defensive coordinator, or both, Flores should absolutely come away with at least several offers.

The NFL’s job hiring process is seriously broken otherwise.

I’m not a lawyer, but the defense doesn’t even in a civil case doesn’t have to prove anything is “untrue”, Flores must prove it is true.

All at this point Flores has done is make accusations, none of which are under the “penalties of perjury”. If perjury were a crime based upon accusations, every time someone lost a civil trial they be locked up. Amber Heard lost against Johnny Depp but she isn’t doing hard time despite claiming all kinds of stuff.

I am not defending nor advocating for either side but to imply that, well it must be true because Flores sued the NFL, seems a huge reach.

  13. Bigot rock-thrower got a job on account of “we stick with our own”, but he doesn’t see any irony in that.

  14. Flores is so vindictive he went to Pittsburg just to coach Fitzpatrick and before you click thumbs down he is that petty

Cowher won 14 in a row with Ben in his rookie season.. that’s the NFL record.
    Read that multiple times..

  16. It’s going to be glorious to read the comments here when BB breaks the wins record. The absurd rationalizations and the things people will say to downplay it will be hilarious. Please, tell us all how the soon to be winningest coach in NFL history is bad or “mediocre”. Lol

  17. Flores will be the next Steelers head coach whenever Tomlin decides to hang it up. Tomlin will make it three coaches in a row who all won super bowls and ended up in the HOF. Flores should do the same. That’s the way the Steelers operate a franchise. More teams should try to copy, instead of hiring and firing good coaches and good GM’s every year. Teams that do that never seem to get up off the floor.

  18. I’m not going to say that BB is only mediocre. I think his game planning and Brady’s talent/work ethic along with both of their attention to detail created a powerful combination.
However, the reality is that Brady went to a new team at age 43 and won a Super Bowl right away. Yes, the team was already talented but it’s not easy getting a team to gel that quickly. Meanwhile BB has struggled since Brady’s departure. Recent drafts haven’t gone well and the Patriot’s prospects don’t look very good right now. For the first time in years they have 2 strong competitors in their division, never mind numerous other teams ahead of them in the conference.
So I’ll say BB is/was an excellent coach overall, but that Brady was the difference maker that put them over the top.

He will probably do it, but it will take at least another 4-5 more seasons. He needs 39 wins to beat Shula. This won’t be easy playing carousel QB’s after Brady.

As a black man, I am troubled by how the ‘R’ is tossed around at the drop of a hat. Undoubtedly, there are instances when even the blind and the deaf can see and hear it. Nevertheless, deploying racism/racist with reckless abandon could be counter productive at a personal level. It barricades one from “looking at self” (to develop self-awareness).

BB drafted, developed and promoted Brady.. Brady was the student. You can’t change reality and facts. It won’t work.

He made Brady. Gave him the answers to the test to help the lowly 6th rd pick no one wanted. Brady was not a star player in 2002 or 2003. He became one with the other elite qbs with the rule changes.

You know who is overrated and a mystery why he is in the HOF? Dungy. He coasted into the #1 overall pick.

Distracted teams during a pandemic and TB winning a sb was not impressive for a default sb winner aided by 2 free tds before halftime. Not impressive at all. Worst sb ever played. Awful.

BB won Exec of the year last year and his drafts have been going just fine with numerous pieces coming along well in the program. a
If you don’t know who they are and just allow yourself to be brainwashed by the anti-BB media doesn’ mean it’s accurate info.

BB is the only coach in NFL history to lead a team with a rookie qb to 7 straight wins, the most ever, for example, but the media never said anything.

My mistake. So, the 2nd best behind Cowher and guess who made that come to a stop? lol

Everywhere you people turn to move goalposts, you lose. Like clockwork.

Somehow Brady is better than BB but I watched BBs D protect Brady with pick 6s in postseason games and lead the way to SB wins with field goals by Vinatieri. Hmmm.

Cowher also said he did what BB and all coaches did with regards to scouting/filming, so does that make Bill Cowher “Cowhercheat”? Just checking.

    Double lol.

  23. Steelers are lucky to have him. It’s no coincidence that number 39 had a pick six and a game saving blocked extra point along with an all pro kind of game. Mikah likes Flores but wasn’t happy with the organization and how they wanted to use him. He knew he had more to offer. So did Pittsburgh!

  24. Matthew Stafford did the same thing in LA that Brady did in Tampa. That means Belichick could have won those SBs with Stafford too. Belichick is the GOAT.

  25. It was the way Flores treated players that got him bored from Miami. The hard nosed approach can work but it can also backfire which it did. He alienated his QB and the team. He was a positional coach who was given the reigns and did OK with them. Everyone acting like he had Miami competing for a Super Bowl is way off base. We’re not even sure what he would look like as a coordinator either. And it’s funny that Touchback6 is proven wrong on this thread by taking up Mac but yet still takes no accountability for it. He just thumps his chest some more like he knows it all. Some would be embarrassed, he just doubles down.
