49ers will likely need to add another quarterback, soon

49ers starting quarterback Trey Lance is out for the year. Jimmy Garoppolo is in.

The 49ers likely will have to add someone else to the depth chart in San Francisco.

Currently, the only other quarterback on the 49ers roster is rookie Brock Purdy. The last man taken in the 2022 draft, Purdy beat out Nate Sudfeld for the third spot on the active roster.

The cupboard is otherwise currently bare. And Sudfeld is now the backup in Detroit.

Available free agents include Cam Newton and Colin Kaepernick (we all know that’s not happening). They could also attempt to sign to the active roster a player currently on another team’s practice squad, such as Josh Rosen. Rosen has previously spent time with the 49ers, and he’s currently on the Cleveland practice squad.

By rule, however, the 49ers can’t sign a quarterback from the Broncos’ practice squad, since they play Denver in six days. This keeps the 49ers from signing Josh Johnson (who has experience with the 49ers and, really, most other teams) until after next weekend. Johnson is a member of the Denver practice squad.

Coach Kyle Shanahan will likely need to do something, unless he’s willing to risk rolling with Brock Purdy. Garoppolo has had durability issues in the past. It’s one of the reasons why the 49ers traded up to draft Trey Lance. If Garoppolo gets injured, it’s Purdy or whoever else they can find.

  1. I heard Farve has some money he has to pay back maybe call him up. Cant be any worse than Lance.

  2. They stressed about trading their QB for the whole offseason. Now they are the one’s looking to trade for a QB. None of us know what tomorrow brings.

  3. Jimmy might have had injury problems in the past, but he still remained healthy enough to take his team to a Superbowl and an NFC Championship game. Trey has now lasted less than two games as the starter? Give Jimmy the “C” for his uniform and give Trey the “glass” nickname.

  4. People think QBs are overpaid. Thuis is an example of how few can actually do this job well. They are worth every penny.

  5. The 49ers actually have two decent QB’s, but they’ll sign another. Brock Purdy can play. He’s the same QB as Baker Mayfield. No better. No worse. It’s funny. One guy was the first overall draft pick, and the other was the last pick. They’re identical in talent. Josh Rosen, and many other talented guys are available. If they get down to their #4 QB, the expectations won’t be very high. Garoppolo raises their chances to get back to the super bowl. I could see last week that trey Lance wasn’t going to last long if they were going to continue to use him as a battering ram. But there still could be a happy ending this year.

  6. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the 49ers go for broke now. Odds are Garappolo is gone after the season. Next year, Trey will probably be less mobile and will have to learn how to be a pocket passer, while working his way back to full health. The point is, next year is going to be tougher. They have the talent/coaching to be very good this year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them swing big for a backup to Garappolo (his ability to play 16 games is questionable). As someone already said, maybe Fitz makes sense if you can convince him to come back (assuming he’s in shape).

  7. Lance face it is a bust next year trade for Rodgers his price will be way down buy then one #1 and you can get him .

  8. I wouldn’t call Lance a bust… yet He’s had a grand total of 3 starts; it’s ridiculous to make a judgment either way. Doesn’t it make you wonder why some already declared him a franchise QB and a MVP candidate. That’s nuts, the guy has never thrown a NFL TD. Veiled attempts to besmirch Garoppolo’s talent, I suspect. The 49ers are going to have a tough offseason, they better win it all now. Think about this… the 49ers drafted Lance because Garoppolo couldn’t stay healthy. Now Lance has had a serious injury. Trey barely played at a small college and didn’t run a 40. Lance is probably going to have to play a different style to make it as a NFL starter, now. That’s an uphill climb.

  9. This is as good a time as any to see just how much the Ravens value Huntley. Not that SF has the draft capital to trade for him, so it’d likely come at the high cost of at least one starter.

Laughable! Purdy looked horrible in his limited preseason possessions. He did absolutely nothing and had trouble holding onto the ball. I’m sure you think Purdy is basically another Josh Allen.

  11. They can surely do a lot better than Brock Purdy. I’ll bet there are 20+ guys just sitting on their couches at home waiting for the phone to ring who are better than Purdy.

  12. In retrospect, the 49ers stole money from Jimmy G when he restructured his deal. They reluctantly committed to Lance knowing there was a relatively high probability they’d need Garoppolo to start some games this year. Now he’s the starter but getting paid backup money instead

  13. So much for the NFL conventional theory that your backup should not be starter material or if you have 2 QBs, you have none. They way players get injuries these days, I always thought the Niners should have kept Jimmy G.

Charliecharger, I am not getting what you are saying here………..

  15. The team had better try to sign a couple of QB’s if they can. It is virtually a given that Jimmy will get dinged in the very near future, and the extra QB’s can be on stand by because Shanahan will continue to use Lance first as a RB, second as a QB. And he’ll be on injured reserve AGAIN.

  16. I don’t think I e’er recall any “season-saving injuries” before, but that’s exactly what this is.

For all the hate on the 49ers drafting Lance, Fields and Mac are not any good either.

Bears and Pats didn’t give up multiple first rounders for either. Nor did they have a competent starter who had already brought them to the Super Bowl. Spending multiple first rounders on Lance may have been one of the worst draft blunders of all time.

    Yes.
Especially with jimmy glass back as starter

    Yup….all he does is win

  19. Shanahan is responsible for breaking Lance. Having Lance run up the gut, against a pretty formidable Seattle D line was crazy

  20. Better make it a BOGO free because you’ll need two new QB’s soon with Shanahan’s play calling and history of getting his QB hurt.
