Jimmy Garoppolo made an extra $350,000 on Sunday, and it could happen more often

Yes, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo slashed his base salary from $25.62 million to $6.5 million when he agreed to stay with the team. But that’s just the beginning, based on his revised deal.

On Sunday, Garoppolo made an extra $350,000. And he’ll make that same amount in every game during which he plays at least 25 percent of the snaps and the 49ers win. The playing-time incentive pays $250,000. Achieving a victory kicks in an extra $100,000.

If he stays healthy for the rest of the season (which is hardly a given), Garoppolo will make at least $3.750 million, in addition to his base salary. He also gets $29,000 for each game in which he’s on the 46-man roster, maxing out at $500,000.

Thus, $6.5 million can become $10.75 million based on taking at least 25 percent of the offensive snaps in each game. And if the 49ers win 10 more games, that’s another $1 million.

That’s before postseason incentives, which include $500,000 if he takes at least half the snaps in a playoff game short of the conference championship, another $500,000 for taking at least half the snaps in the conference title game, $500,000 for winning that game, and $1 million for taking at least half the snaps in the Super Bowl.

Again, he needs to stay healthy. That’s something he hasn’t been able to do in the past. It’s one of the reasons why the 49ers made the move to get Trey Lance, whose injury has opened the door for Garoppolo to keep playing for a team that spent most of the year trying to unload him.

  1. Shanna-Lynch thought they were the smartest guys in the room when they convinced Jimmy G to take that big pay cut. Not so much now. Hopefully Jimmy will realize his new found power in this situation and demand his old contract be reinstated. If I were him — I’d hold out this week for his former contact — plus all the additional bonus money from from the current deal. The 9ers have screwed him over for nearly two years now. It’s time for him to return the favor!

  2. What happens when Jimmy G gets the 49ers to the Super Bowl? Sorry Jimmy, you’ve played great, but we’re keeping this kid who’s inaccurate and can’t read defenses because we spent too much drafting him!

  3. I hope it costs the 49ers over 50 million for one seasons worth of work. They really jerked him around this summer

  4. I understand Lynch and Shanahan being concerned about Garoppolo’s injury history. But that’s not a good reason to spend huge draft capital to draft a guy with limited experience–and whose propensity for injury you don’t know. I don’t have anything against Trey Lance, but I hope Jimmy does great and can write his own ticket next season.

  5. Niners one Jimmy Glass moment away from the Brock Purdy era. Titanic mismanagement of the QB situation by Kyle. Shanahan is feeling the heat as evidenced by him getting snippy at the Bay Area media yesterday.

  6. What is it with the Niners and fragile QB’s? I can’t remember a season since Shanahan got here that a QB didn’t miss at least one game.

  7. I hope Jimmy earns every cent of the bonuses. He is a good Quarterback and the 49’ers kinda did him dirty.

  8. The fact that the people who watch Jimmy G practice everyday don’t believe in him should tell you something. This is a superbowl roster just waiting on a QB who can make a play when necessary. He is Jared Goff.

  9. Imagine if Jimmy squatted on the Niners now when they need him in the worst way after the organization spent the whole summer doing that to him…

  10. The Niners with Jimmy G. have a reasonable path to the NFC championship this year. That will be the 3rd time in 5 years. What was a ridiculous overpay 5 years ago will have become one of the best investments in a QB contract ever made outside of a Tom Brady contract. And then there will be another big contract after this year, with hefty guarantees.

What kind of incentives does Brock Purdy have in his contact?

He made the roster so he gets his $750k salary instead of a few thousand bucks a week on practice squad.

Screwed him over? They gave him a huge contract after he only started like 4 games or something and limited playing time. He had a great team built around him that got him to a SB but he couldn’t close the deal. Niners paid him $100m+ already. He kept getting hurt and then didn’t seem many teams wanted him anyway, it balances out with his new contract, he’s fine.
