NFL is reviewing all aspects of the Bucs-Saints incident, including Bruce Arians’s role in it

USA TODAY Sports

Conspicuously visible during Sunday’s fourth-quarter fracas between the Buccaneers and Saints was retired Tampa Bay coach Bruce Arians. The NFL may be taking a closer look at whether he’ll be allowed to roam so freely on the sidelines during games.

Now the “senior adviser to the General Manger” (which sounds better than “assistant to the traveling secretary” and/or “assistant to the Regional Manager”), Arians was present and active on Sunday. He was doing no apparent or obvious advising of the General Manager, however. Even before the brawl that resulted in the ejection of Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans and Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore, which featured Arians chirping and/or instigating from the sideline, Arians could be seen peppering one of the officials with questions and/or complaints.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the league office currently is working on addressing all things related to the incident, including sidelines. That specifically includes Arians.

It’s unclear whether the league can direct the Buccaneers to get Arians off the sideline, but it should. He’s no longer a member of the coaching staff. He should act accordingly.

Then again, the Bucs may appreciate having an extra agitator during the games. Someone who can piss and moan about whatever, whenever while the head coach is focused on other things. As long as Arians doesn’t interject himself into the actual coaching of the team, the Bucs can benefit from having him around.

That doesn’t make it OK, from the league’s perspective. If Arians is permitted to keep doing what he did on Sunday, every team should consider designating one specific member of the non-coaching staff to be a chronic irritant, to the officials and/or opponents and/or anyone.

As reported last night (but widely ignored and now regarded as “breaking news” from multiple outlets this morning), Evans and Lattimore face a potential suspension, because of their history. If a suspension will be imposed, it most likely will happen today. There undoubtedly would be an immediate appeal, with an expedited ruling.

  1. Sounds like they’re just going after the Bucs Because why is it then ok for Jerry jones, Arthur smith, and the list goes on for them to be on the sidelines. First time bruce does and we are investigating, these guys constantly but it’s alright

  2. The majority of the fault lies with the refs. They ignored a blatant penalty by Lattimore. Had he been rightly penalized, he would not have been there jawing and instigating a fight.

Get better refs and they’ll have less issues.

  3. Why wasn’t Fornette ejected too? Brady was not innocent either but of course he won’t be touched.

  4. They’ll suspend Lattimore just cuz they can. Hopefully they look at Fournette (& Brady) real close.

  5. In the 2020 year (during the Covid season), the NFL changed their rule about suits on the sideline. Since then, GM’s and others have been on the sidelines of games.

I have no problem with that. Personally, I would rather have guys actually associated with the team on the sidelines more than Odell Beckham Jr. on a different sideline each week.

But to be fair, if a player can get suspended a week for an action than Bruce Arians should and can be suspended from the sidelines for his action in a previous game.

  6. I mean, these 2 truly dislike each other and although it wasn’t anything too crazy, you gotta suspend them a game or two or otherwise you set the precedent that you can push each other around like idiots and there are no consequences for it.

  7. Arians has always been a loudmouth. He needs to just go away. Roethlisberger is now retired – go play golf w/ him like you used to when you were OC in Pittsburgh.

  8. Hockey settles it the right way.

Let the 2 instigating parties hash it out one on one as grown men without everyone else getting involved. Then its over. They look like children with wall the shoving.

I rarely say this, but the NFL needs to be more like the NHL with this.

  9. Week 1 there were shots of him up in a booth so he seems to just be roaming around. Can’t think of another example of a coach stepping down entirely and still being on the sidelines. That is a strange dynamic and one best avoided. If he’s supposedly advising the GM then he should be with the GM during games.

  10. This is the second time Evans has come out of nowhere to blindside Lattimore. Both were incidents he wasn’t even involved in but interjected himself. It needs to be a longer suspension for him. Lattimore should get fined for taunting

  11. Good. Evans has a history of cheap shots. Arians is a blowhard and should be in a booth or suite somewhere, not hobbling along the sideline. The Buccaneers have looked like garbage so far.

Because they are the owners and one is also GM. Arians is just there taking up space because he was already under contact.

  13. I’d love to see him on the sidelines more… and the opposing team’s QB firing a bullet pass or two during the game directly at him.

  14. This is getting silly. Is the NFL investigating guys chirping at each other and getting under people skin?

Evans and Lattimore weren’t brawling or throwing haymakers at each other. Lattimore throat punched fournette and then Evans came over and hit Lattimore. Then another player grabbed Evans and they wrestled to the ground. If you look at the video both benches were actually doing a good job separating everyone this wasn’t some massive brawl. Both players got kicked out…we don’t need to treat this like the ‘04 Pacers-Pistons brawl. Their last dust up came in ‘17…they’ve played each other 9-10 times since then. They got kicked out for the remainder of a tied game. Just fine them and move on

  15. When I first saw Arians’ name mentioned yesterday I thought it was a typo – crazy that he’s hanging around on the sideline.

  16. I am a BA fan.

He has been a very successful coach from Temple when he ran almost exclusively to Arizona where he made the playoffs with a broken down QB (Palmer) to Tampa where he won a Super Bowl. Is he an all-time great? No. Very good NFL coach? Yup.

BTW, he was standing with the GM on the sidelines for about half of the game.

  17. If Frank Reich occasionally threw a tablet on the sideline like Brady it might actually get the team going. It certainly worked for the Bucs yesterday.

It’s an emotional game, suppressing that emotion isn’t healthy.

I’m not defending Arians but your reasoning of where he should be shows your lack of understanding. Being an adviser doesnt mean your hand in hand with the person all day every day unless there is something specific to be advising him on at the time, while your not advising though your gathering knowledge and a different perspective on things to advise in the future, hence why a former coach would want to be on the sideline to see the team as he did as a coach to advise in the future. Again during the game there is nothing to advise a gm on but after the game would be when he would be able to advice on not only the players but the coaches.

Now again I’m not defending Arians as he was simply being a blowhard but its not hard to see why an adviser would be there although it’s another matter whether one should be allowed to be there 🤷‍♂️

  19. It was just a little pushing and shoving until Evans got involved out of nowhere. He needs to be suspended.

  20. Arians, Lattimore, Brady, & Fournette should all be fined (and the amounts in that order, i.e. biggest fine for Arians, then Lat, etc). Evans should be suspended for at least 2 games.

  21. These two were going at it all day and the refs did nothing! No flags, no warnings, nothing. It was a pressure cooker building all game. Refs are just as much to blame.

  22. Arians has always been a clown and would never have a ring if not for Brady. Funny how the guy who initiated the whole incident just walked away and and will never be implicated. Just part of Tom’s plan, win at all cost no matter what it takes. NFL will not penalize Tommy and the Bucs.
    .

  23. For the idiots that want to play the “what about” game. Here is why Arians would be treated differently than an owner on the sidelines, or a GM on the sidelines:
“Even before the brawl that resulted in the ejection of Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans and Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore, which featured Arians chirping and/or instigating from the sideline, Arians could be seen peppering one of the officials with questions and/or complaints.”

Made me think of Necessary Roughness when they ran the sweep toward the sidelines and ultimately out of bounds and both teams drilled the Texas State Dean/President/whoever

  25. Iv seen celebrities on the sidelines hollering at players. Bruce is a part of the team staff in whatever capacity. Of course he belongs on the sidelines.

  26. 100% this was on Arians and Brady. Since the NFL loves both of them I’m sure zero will be done about it. Please let this be the last year for Tommy

Bruce is, and always has been, a big baby.
    ————————————————————————
Actually the biggest baby yesterday was Tommy Brady. His numerous petulant fits tossing his Microsoft Tablet, slamming his helmet on the bench while yelling at his receivers on the field for missing his poorly-thrown passes leads everyone to believe two-yard didn’t want to be there yesterday. Yelling at refs over a no call, then basically single-handedly instigating the brawl afterwards — it’s gotten to the point to where it never ends with this guy. Even his body language when he arrived at the game was that of a guy who really didn’t want to be there. Yeah, you got “s@#t” going on, Tom — but don’t bring the whole league down with you as well. We’re sick of your terrible twos act and if you can’t handle your issues like a real man, re-retire and save us all from your angst. If not, I see a famous Y.A. Tittle photo in your near future.

  28. Brady whines and Lattimore was talking trash. It’s just what they do. Fournette escalated it by shoving Lattimore, who pushed back, then Evans clocks Lattimore while he’s not looking. Not for the first time and it’s just what he does because he can’t beat him on the field or while he’s looking.

  29. Hey jpspear, maybe Evans will be charitable to Lattimore and let him kiss his Super Bowl ring. Something he will never in his life get

  30. This is laughable. We all know Brady’s dad goodell will do absolutely nothing to Brady and his team. Never seen a more protected athlete in the history of sports than Brady.

  31. @bigeasystyle

    “The Bucs started the fight”

No, they just finished it! Go Bucs! Enjoy having Jameis. LOL

  32. Brady incited the whole thing. He is entitled and completely off the rails.

It’s going to bite Tampa in the end when it comes crumbling down.

  33. Sidelines should be restricted to players, coaching and support staff. Owners and GMs get their luxury booths to sit in.

  34. Every NFL rule applies to everyone without exception and there’s an exception to every rule. Is that clear?

  35. Scrums/fights happen.
Bucs were flat up to that point and this woke them up. Brought the team together and led to some big plays. Hopefully it’s an early turning point in the season.

  36. Bowles should have decked Arians. His presence undermines Bowles. Arians quit his job as coach and had no place on the sidelines. Gasbag.

  37. From reading some of these comments makes me laugh at all the people who are showing they afraid of the Buccaneers. What an honor for the Buc’s and especially for Brady….

    “Thank you for that!”
