Britain Covey parked in fan lot Monday night after security didn’t recognize him

Eagles rookie punt returner Britain Covey was mistaken for a kicker during training camp. On Monday, he wasn’t even recognized as a player by team security.

When he arrived to Lincoln Financial Field, Covey was denied access to the players’ parking lot.

He didn’t have the correct parking pass since he was promoted from the practice squad earlier in the day, and parking attendants didn’t recognize him.

“I said, ‘I’ve been elevated to the active roster. I’m a return guy,'” Covey told Tim McManus of ESPN. “They kind of looked at me skeptically, and after a little bit they were like, ‘Look, man, we’re sorry. You just don’t have the pass.’ I didn’t want to make a scene so I just said, ‘OK, just point me to where everybody else parks.’ And so they pointed me to where everybody else parks.”

The parking pass he had saved him $45 but forced him to park with fans a quarter mile away. Covey said he had to ask tailgaters where to go, and a handful of fans asked for a photo with him as he walked toward the stadium.

“A few of them were looking at me like, ‘I feel like that guy is. . .’ and finally I said, ‘Are we ready for the game?’ And they said, ‘Yeah, are you?'” Covey said.

Covey, who returned three punts for 14 yards, said he might turn his unusual welcome-to-the-NFL moment into a tradition by parking in the fan lot from now on.

“I’m not that far removed from being that 13-year-old at a tailgate throwing a football, and it inspires me to just remember where I come from,” he said. “I’m determined to prove myself here and you have to start from where you started, and that’s the bottom, and prove yourself,” Covey said. “Honestly, for me it’s a great story because it reminds me of my mentality. . . . It makes me want to play better; it makes me want to be better.”

  1. The NFL has plenty of time to get his Super Bowl parking pass ready, so he’ll be good to go in Arizona in Feb.

  2. Taking the time to interact with fans on the way into the stadium would be a really great tradition to start. Until it gets windy and cold. Plus, if he ever has a fumble the previous week it would be brutal!

  3. As a Cowboys fan, this is an awesome story. He made some fans night by talking to them, didn’t make a scene with people just doing there job. I wish him success, except against Dallas, of course.

  4. Good on security for following the rules to the letter.
It’s too bad the front office didn’t have their stuff together to make sure an active player didn’t have to park an acre away.
And $45 bucks to park. What a great racket owning a parking lot is.

  5. Guys were doing their jobs. I’m sure it’ll get straightened out. Good on him for just going with the flow. Not enough of that these days.

  6. “I’m not that far removed from being that 13-year-old at a tailgate throwing a football, and it inspires me to just remember where I come from,” he said.

Hard not to root for this guy.

  7. Great story and good on him for not trying to make it THAT big of a deal as he realized the stadium workers were just doing their job given his parking pass wasn’t correct.

Seems like a level headed kid appreciating his opportunity

  8. That’s the most down to earth thinking i have heard from a player in a while. Hope they don’t make him drive to road games though. There is a saints linebacker that lived in his van in the parking lot at the training facility this preseason.

  9. Love your thought process kid, but muff one punt in Philly and cost them the game, and you’ll need that security pass (the correct one) to get you in the stadium.

  10. It’s like last year’s commercial with Mayfield trying to get back into the stadium through security.

“Keys and change on the belt, please.”
    “But it’s me, Baker.”
“Sorry Parker, just doin’ my job.”

  11. I like that story. I wish him the best simply because I’d love to see him continue to do park there on game days.

  12. Cool guy so far. Great to see him just take in the moment and enjoy it as a fan as he passed through fan parking. Hopefully he gets a chance to play more so we can see what we have in him.
