Sterling Shepard tore his ACL

USA Today Sports

The fear on Monday night was that Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard suffered a season-ending knee injury and it was confirmed on Tuesday.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll told reporters that Shepard tore his left ACL on the final play of the game. Shepard was away from the play and went down with a non-contact injury.

It’s the second straight season that’s ended with a major injury for Shepard. He tore his Achilles in 2021 and then took a pay cut in order to remain with the Giants this season. Shepard is not under contract for 2023, so Monday night may have been his final appearance for the Giants.

Shepard had 13 catches for 154 yards and a touchdown this year.

The loss of Shepard leaves an already underwhelming Giants receiving corps even thinner. Richie James is the leading receiver through three games as Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney have remained non-factors in their second season with the team. David Sills, Darius Slayton, and rookie Wan'Dale Robinson are also on the roster.

  1. I never quite understand how an ACL can tear by simply running in a straight line with no contact. Crazy. Seems like that could happen to any of us. I hope I don’t tear mine when I go to the kitchen to get a beer.

  2. Maybe it is time for Odell Beckham to return to the Giants. Antonio Brown is also available but are the Giants desperate enough to reach out to him?

  3. Unhappy news. But he does get to avoid a long flight, a loss to Green Bay in London, and then long flight home.

  4. I forgot about the GB game. Talk about the luck of LeFleur: pats qb out this week against the pack, and not the giants have no real receiver threats, against a team whose pass d was suspect to begin with. I think the pack has the knack of playing teams at their worst. Its un canny.

  5. This is probably the end of the line for him with the Giants. That Giants WRs room looked great on paper after the Toney selection and Golloday signing but its been nothing short of a disaster. I don’t like Odell but he’s right that the league should be playing on grass with how much money is available to them. It’s surprising the owners aren’t pushing for this more considering they’re paying these players millions and then losing them to major injuries over nothing.

You mean the Packers who had to play without Lazard, Bakhtiari, and Jenkins week 1? Or without Watson, Jaire, and Sammy Watkins against the Buccaneers? Every team has injuries. The Packers’ opponents also “benefit” by so many of our players being out.

  7. If he played for the Cowboys Dr Jerry Jones would have fixed it and he would have finished the game.

  8. “I never quite understand how an ACL can tear by simply running in a straight line with no contact.”

The ACL was likely partially torn already and just needed a nudge to completely tear

  9. Something to think about. Shepard was coming back from an achilles injury. One of the challenges with recovering from an injury is in trying to compensate for the injury or fear from reinjuring it – we can overcompensate in other areas, which could lead to additional injuries. Shepard tore his achilles against the Cowboys last season on December 19 – and he was playing in games 9 months later. Maybe it was too quick of a turnaround. He is a warrior and will be missed.

  10. Some people aren’t built to withstand the physicality of Pro Football.
I understand he was only running in a straight line. I was watching.
Freaky injury considering there was no contact,or cutting,… but he has a history of leg issues. I’ll rack it up to Tough Luck.

  11. Per Stapleton, Beckham roots for the Giants and would like to return. However, he wants more money and isn’t ready to play.

Good luck to Shep on the latest rehab and recovery. You’re a solid Giant!

  12. This does though feel like the Roger Clemens like Yankees moment where the Giants somehow find the money and bring back Beckham. In reality they better get Leonard Williams healthy as his absence was huge.

Do you think Jones being out helps or hurts the Packers? From what I have seen from Jones in the first three games, a new QB can only help the Pats

  14. Bad Fields, Fake Grass, players dropping like flies. I think the Strength and Conditioning Coaches need to go back to school!!
