Bill Belichick: Aaron Rodgers makes plays that not many guys can make

The Patriots and Packers don’t play often, illustrated by the fact that quarterback Aaron Rodgers has made just two career starts against the club.

But his third start against New England will be on Sunday, as the Patriots head to Wisconsin for the Week Four matchup.

On Wednesday, New England head coach Bill Belichick was asked about the importance of disguising defensive coverages to not tip Rodgers off in any way. Unlike his answers about quarterback Mac Jonesankle injury, Belichick had plenty to say about Rodgers.

“We try to do that every week. Try not to give the quarterbacks any more information than you need to — after you’re in position to play. So, sometimes the formations force you to do a little bit of it,” Belichick said in his press conference. “But yeah, we certainly don’t want to give him anything more than what he already has. He’s seen it all a million times. They don’t turn the ball over. He doesn’t make many mistakes — he never has. He’s a very resourceful quarterback. He makes the plays that are there and he makes a few plays that really aren’t there. And then he rarely makes a mistake where he has a bad play. There’s very, very few of those.

“I think that’s one of the things that makes him a great quarterback. He’s got a great arm, he’s got great touch. He’s accurate. He helps the team win. He does the things they need to do to win. And he makes some plays that there’s not many guys that could make. But, he doesn’t try to do that all the time and makes good decisions. Certainly, very protective of the ball and the operation of the offense. He’s got a lot of freedom — which he should. And he makes a lot — a lot — of good decisions.”

Rodgers is 1-1 as a starter against Belichick, winning 26-21 in 2014 and falling to the Patriots 31-17 in 2018. He’s completed 48-of-81 passes for 627 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in those contests.

  1. Rodgers is also the best at losing in the playoffs against the 49ers, Seahawks, and Falcons. No one even comes close.

  2. I hate to say this as a Pats fan, but it sounds like he was describing everthing that Mac Jones is not good at.

  3. And AR is the BEST Quarterback to ever lose FOUR NFC Championship games.
    Great regular season QB, who also does well in Divisional playoffs.

    Not so much in NFCCG.

    Aaron Rodgers didn’t have his offense and coordinator changed in year 2.

    Thanks.

  5. Aaron Rodgers didn’t have his offense and coordinator changed in year 2.
    ==========

    He did, actually.

    Mike Sherman and both his coordinators were fired after 2005.

  6. Aaron Rodgers vs. Brian Hoyer. The Patriots fans will be back in the parking lot tailgating by halftime.

    Rodgers had seven different offensive coordinators since 2005. He has a new OC for this season. I’m sure you believe that BB decided to completely flip the playbook on Mac Jones in year 2. Right?

  8. Aaron Rodgers didn’t have his offense and coordinator changed in year 2.

    He did…and besides I thought BB was the QB whisperer?

  9. more important question re: Mac vs Rodgers is how many times has the offensive system been completely revamped under Rodgers’ tenure? They basically took away everything that Mac was thriving in, gave him a porous O-Line and no OC. Asking him to do a bit too much and giving him too little, IMHO.

    And how much did we really know about Rodgers 3 games into his second year? You are comparing him now to Mac 21 games in and facing a month or so off due to injury (back to the O-Line issue)

    Translation: I can’t stop this guy and I no longer have a QB who can keep up with him

    But it is good to have a QB who has a legit career and doesn’t cheat. Unlike the last guy 🙂

  11. Fun fact: Since the 2010 Super Bowl Aaron Rodgers has benefited from a top 10 defense on his team the same number of times that Tom Brady did NOT benefit from a top 10 defense on his team.

    Once.

  12. And how much did we really know about Rodgers 3 games into his second year?
    ==========

    Everybody knew about his arm.

    The only regular season action he saw in 2005, garbage time in a 45-point loss, he certainly wasn’t ‘the’ Aaron Rodgers.

    The Packers seemed sold on him. Rumor is, they tried to trade Favre to Dallas that offseason.

    .. but there isn’t much point in comparing this to Jones, who was immediately anointed as the starter.

  13. Rodgers is also the best at losing in the playoffs against the 49ers, Seahawks, and Falcons. No one even comes close.
    ===========

    Tom Bradys postseason record against the J-E-S-T is the same as Rodgers against the Seahawks and Falcons.

    Would that be close? The same is something more than close.

    … the jests. Their last Playoff win came against Tom Brady. The Jets. Think about that.

  14. Aaron Rodgers vs. Brian Hoyer. The Patriots fans will be back in the parking lot tailgating by halftime.
    ==========

    Only 16 points/game so far.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if Belichick keeps them under 20.

  15. Fun fact: Since the 2010 Super Bowl Aaron Rodgers has benefited from a top 10 defense on his team the same number of times that Tom Brady did NOT benefit from a top 10 defense on his team.
    ==========

    The only time Rodgers played with a top 5 defense, he won the Super Bowl.

    Brady; 10, 6 of his Super Bowl teams
