Jerry Jones: Dak Prescott can’t grip the ball well enough to play

When Cowboys owner and G.M. Jerry Jones said after Sunday’s win over the Commanders that he doesn’t know whether quarterback Dak Prescott can play in Week Five against the Rams, Jones said Dak’s return hinges on the ability to grip and control the ball without pain.

Five days from the next game, Dak is still struggling to do what he needs to do to play.

Asked on 105.3 The Fan whether Dak can currently grip the ball, Jones said (via Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports), “No, not well enough to play.”

Still, even with Cooper Rush winning games in Dak’s absence, Jones isn’t thinking about making a quarterback switch, even though he mused about having a “dilemma” at the position.

Asked whether there are any number of wins that Rush can manage to keep Dak on the bench indefinitely, Jones said (via Epstein), “No. No. As I see it right today.”

Of course, Jones could see it a different way if Rush beats the Rams in Week Five. Or the Eagles on Sunday night in Week Six.

Regardless, it’s the proverbial “good problem to have.” And it’s not yet a problem. Dak is clearly the better option at quarterback. But winning games is universal, and Rush is presiding over a team that is indeed winning games.

That may not give Rush the long-term job, but it could prompt the Cowboys to slow-play Dak’s return until he’s truly 100 percent.

  1. The fact Jones would tip off an opponent 5 days before game day just speaks to his brilliance.

  2. Can Jerry keep his $40 million QB on the bench once cleared to play? I seriously doubt it.

  3. Jerry doesn’t WANT Dak to play right now while they are winning with Rush. Let’s see what happens when they get to the tougher part of the schedule.

  4. Jerrah last week, “Dak, let me introduce you to Adrian Peterson.”

Jerrah this week, “Dak’s hurt his hand some more, so we’re gonna go with Cooper Rush again.”

  5. It was never going to be a 4 week turnaround. That was Jerrah trying to not the fan base lose hope as no on knew how Rush was going to respond. The Rams are a mess and can’t block anyone. Jerrah can’t make Dak heal and his the Cowboys hype man. Just like any other team the medical staff will clear Dak and Jerrah will keep spinning very thing for the media. What has been loss in this is the great job McCarthy has done to keep the ship not only afloat but kept it moving in the right direction. Everyone left the Cowboys for dead after week 1.

  6. On Sep 20th Jones said, “…everybody recognizes that he’ll be back sooner than later as far as the timeline,” Jones said. “It really could be a minimum of two weeks up here in my mind. Now, that’s very optimistic. But he’s got the kind of repair there that will allow him to not have a lot of fear of re-injuring it…”

That’s when he wanted him back, now he doesn’t, Jerry is liar.

  7. He did not want to give Dak that contract and now I’m sure he’s kicking himself. Privatly I have no doubt he wants Coop to keep playing.

  8. This is just too funny. The NFL should just become a reality
series. They could make a fortune.

  9. The guy is a lot smarter than you all give him credit for. The mans a genius in business and life. Jerrus is the king of media also he knows to keep laying Cooper and not rush Dakota back too quickly.

  10. The question is, when Dak can grip the ball, will Rush have too strong a grip on the starting position. There are a lot of nerdy teams who’d pay way too much for Dak.

    ——————–

Sports are a reality series, they are the original reality series.

  12. ” Jones not thinking about making a QB switch ” so they finally admit he is the coach? Since this happened I haven’t heard much from Mcarthy just Jerra !

  13. If you are conversant in the Cowboys-speak or Jones-speak languages, “Dak can’t grip the ball well enough to play” translates to “We are winning with Cooper Rush and Dak wasn’t looking that good anyway.”

  14. He can go with the cheap replacement level QB or go with the $40 million replacement level QB.

  15. Dak isn’t playing until after the bye. Not because Jerry says or Rush wins or loses, but because he had major surgery on his throwing thumb and has an entire career in front of him. Why risk further injury.

    It’s really that simple.

  16. Oh please- Cowboys and Rush have played very inferior competition. Dak is their #1 QB without a doubt. Speaking of Dak, Jones is so brilliant he kept Dak on active roster instead of IR even though most people knew it will take longer than 4 weeks. His foolishness caused Dallas to have one fewer person available. Lol

Uh huh. Right. Who didn’t see this coming?

    ==============================================

I think a lot of people saw a dude with a broken thumb having trouble gripping a football coming

  18. In other words, we’re winning without him – we’re gonna ride this horse as long as we can.

  19. “GM turned doctor turned physical therapist. Is there anything Jerry can’t do?”

But is there anything he can do well?

  20. Dallas gets the Rams and Eagles next. I think it will be pretty telling where they are at with Dak after this Rams game and if they keep sticking with Cooper until Dak is 100% healed. Cooper and the passing offense hasn’t really been great but it is doing enough because the defense is playing great. A passing TD in first quarter vs Bengals, a passing TD in 4th quarter vs NYG. Struggled vs Washington with a 12-7 halftime lead until finally pushing forward but they are 3-0 with him so if they continue that they wont have to rush Dak back. I think if they struggle and lose vs the Rams you might see Dak return vs my Eagles however the way our defense is playing they might wait.

  21. Rams are too good to lose 2 in a row. Cowboys are going to find out it’s a lot tougher to play rams and eagles than giants and commanders regardless of who’s the QB. When Aaron Donald and Leonard Floyd are in Rush’s face the cowboys will come back to earth, just like last season.

  22. I remember when Kurt Warner had a similar injury. The Rams gave up on him. He was in NY for a while as a backup to Eli. Then in Arizona backing up Matt Leinart. He eventually healed up and could once again grip the ball. He made his way back onto the field and took Arizona to the super bowl. I’d love to hear Kurt comment on this injury. It’s tough to throw if you can’t grip the ball. Dak will return and possibly take Dallas back to the super bowl. He was playing as well as any QB in the league before he started getting these injuries.

  23. “Dak is clearly the better option at quarterback.”

Are we sure about that? I mean, really sure?

Prescott puts up big stats, but has a pretty dismal record against winning teams. You’re never going to get anywhere if you can’t beat winning teams. Rush’s sample size is small, but if he does well against the better teams on the schedule, then the meaningful difference changes quickly.

  24. This will light a fire under Prescott, who will return, begin running with the ball to try and prove his value and promptly wind up back on the injury list.

  25. When Dak went down Jerry Jones was like Oh he might even play next week, now that Cooper Rush is slinging it a couple weeks later Dak can’t squeeze the ball.

This is what we Pats fans thought about Drew Bledsoe when he got injured….. Give BB credit, he didn’t care that the Pats had just given Bledsoe a huge contract…..he stayed with the winner

  28. You can rule out the JJ is wondering who his QB should be. But the likely scenario is that its Dak but they are indeed going to give him time to heal him completely. A lot of speculation will swirl while they are taking it slow, but really its just the smart thing that they have the luxury of doing. Nothing deeper than that.

You’re saying that it takes a genius to keep going with the hot handed back up QB rather than rush the starting QB back from injury? Ok.

He would make a terrible shrink (psychologist), it would be all about Jerrah.
