Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers are atop the NFC West.

Garoppolo turned in a solid game today in Carolina, with two touchdowns and no interceptions, as the 49ers cruised to an easy 37-15 win over the Panthers.

The win improves the 49ers to 3-2 and first place in the NFC West. The 49ers are 2-0 within the division and currently own the tiebreaker over all their division foes.

Jeff Wilson had a good game running the ball for the 49ers, topping 100 yards, and Garoppolo spread the ball around, with six different receivers catching multiple passes.

The downside of the game for the 49ers was injuries: Defensive end Nick Bosa, kicker Robbie Gould and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley all exited with injuries.

Baker Mayfield played another ugly game for the Panthers, who just can’t do much of anything offensively. Late in the game Mayfield was benched for PJ Walker. Carolina is now 1-4, and the biggest question is how much longer head coach Matt Rhule can keep his job.

Rhule was brought in to build a winning culture in Carolina, and he hasn’t even come close to that. If anything, the Panthers look like they’ve gone backward since Rhule arrived. Rhule was well-regarded as a college coach, and he may actually prefer to get fired now so that he can get one of the open college jobs.

Five games into the season may seem too early to talk about that, but this Panthers team looked today like it’s going nowhere. The 49ers, on the other hand, look like they’re going places.

  1. Dominant win and great fight by the CAR defense.

Again this game is highlighted by the the 49er D. Pick 6’s in back to back games only displays that. I can assume (based on our previous losses) that Shanahan likes to ‘play down to our opponent’ based on the conservative play calling. The injury to Gould hurts more than Bosa due to the defensive depth.

But still, with the run game this efficient and the clutch passes on 3rd down I’m just grateful to see the team at 3-2 and atop the division. Onto Atlanta …

    GO NINERS!!!!!

  2. Carolina needs to activate Darnold next week.

Mayfield is atrocious. At least Darnold can mix in some big plays with all the INTs he will throw.

  3. Tepper should settle on a buyout tomorrow, let Rhule start looking for college jobs and hit the reset button. Start looking for a new GM so they can hire the best available head coach. It absolutely hurts watching Panthers games!!

  4. I wouldn’t too much stock in this victory other than they didn’t have a let down. Panthers are bad.

  5. Still early in the season, but the Panthers are well positioned at 1-4 to hope for the first pick in the 2023 draft. Just keep Mayfield as the starter and things might turn your way comes next year.

  6. With all due respect to Trey Lance, who might yet become a good QB, JimmyG gives the 49ers the better chance to win it all this year even if Lance had not been injured. As with any team, injuries matter. A healthy 49er team can beat anyone even if they’re not the favored, which they should not be against teams like the Bills or Chiefs.
