Eagles move to 5-0 with 20-17 win in Arizona

The Eagles remain the only unbeaten team in the NFL, but they needed some help from the Cardinals to get it.

After the Eagles took a 20-17 lead on a Cameron Dicker field goal with 1:45 left to play, Kyler Murray was able to get the Cardinals to midfield on a run and a pass to tight end Zach Ertz. Murray, who had no timeouts available, hit Ertz and Hollywood Brown for two more first downs that moved the ball to the Philadelphia 34-yard-line before stopping clock with a spike.

Murray than ran for nine more yards before sliding to go down and spiking the ball. That left the Cardinals with a 4th-and-1 and left no choice but to send Matt Ammendola up for a 43-yard field goal to tie the game. Ammendola pushed the kick wide to the right and the Eagles held on for their fifth win of the year.

A few more yards before sliding might have made a difference, but a 43-yard kick shouldn’t be too big of an ask for your kicker.

Ammendola was cut by the Chiefs earlier this year after being a big reason why they lost to the Colts. If Matt Prater remains out for Arizona, they may opt for a different replacement.

Jalen Hurts ran for two touchdowns in the first half to stake the Eagles to a 14-0 lead, but they were not able to continue pouring on the points after his second score. While long Cardinals drives cut down on their opportunities in the second half, they also had a first down on the Arizona 10-yard-line before Dicker’s final field goal so they didn’t take full advantage of their opportunities.

They took advantage of enough to win, though, and that sets them up for a big showdown with the Cowboys at home next Sunday night. Hurts ran 15 times for 61 yards and completed 26-of-36 passes for 239 yards. Miles Sanders added 58 yards on 15 carries and Dallas Goedert had eight catches for 95 yards.

Murray finished 28-of-42 for 250 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also ran for 42 yards, but the slow start wound up catching up with the team again as they had to turn to a kicker off the street to try to extend the game in the final seconds.

They’ll travel to Seattle to face the 2-3 Seahawks in Week Six.

  1. They’re on a roll no doubt, but you gotta win the games that mean the most, and that’s in December and January…We’ll see

  2. A win’s a win. Not pretty for either team. Who woulda thought the top 3 nfc east teams are a combined 13-2 after 5 weeks (one of those losses being from each other)

  3. Man that was close. My Eagles need to learn how to score points in the SECOND HALF ! Fox showed a stat that the Eagles were #1 in scoring 2nd quarter points, but dead last in scoring the rest of the game. The Cardinals darn near beat us. Unless the Eagles can start scoring in all 4 quarters we’re gonna have a time beating the Cowboys and Giants. Let’s learn from this game and get ready for Dallas.

  4. Kicker is a scapegoat. The Cardinals need a QB, and that’s why they ultimately lost.

  5. Great game. Cardinals aren’t as terrible as people say. Eagles are in some ways only a few notches better than the team that went 9-8 last year.

  6. Another slow start will have Kingsbury once again making his weekly “We need to figure out how to start faster” statement. Murray’s slide and spike was a complete brain cramp, too. Every Cards game seems to start and end the same way.

  7. Iggles are 5-0 against teams that had a combined record of 32-52 last year ,just throwing it out there !

  8. Iggles always get their NFC EAST Rivals at home on Monday or Sunday nights , never seen anything like it

  9. Maybe put that homework clause back in Kyler Murray’s contract. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Doesn’t matter. They can take their embarrassing beating in front of a national audience like always.

  11. The Eagles were without their left tackle , left guard , kicker and slot cornerback . I’d give a game ball to Dicker the kicker who had a great game.

  12. There is a lot of teams linked to Sean Payton, but I think a Sean/Kyler duo would be magical.

  13. Why would the Cardinals sign Ammendola after the Chiefs, who are still in need of a kicker, just cut him for performance? I wish the guy well though, he must be living right to keep a place on the short list for backups.

  14. Shout out to North Penn alum Ammendola for purposely missing that kick. No doubt as a lifelong Eagles fan he wanted us to remain undefeated. Go Birds.

  15. -Dicker will probably be kicking for the Cardinals next week

    For a fifth rounder….lol!!!!!

  16. Matt Amendola gets the dubious distinction of costing 2 different teams wins in back-to-back weeks. First, he cost KC a win one week ago missing 2 kicks and causing KC to actually fake FG at one point. Then he gets cut, and in a move that boggles the mind, gets signed by the decison-makers in Arizona, only to lose the game for them on a chip-shot 43 yard FG. Wow.

Guess what? It’s not last year.

The Eagles need to figure out what isn’t working with their second half adjustments. Also, that was some very bad defense on the cards last drive. The old playing not to lose defense should’ve at least cost the Eagles regulation. How many times was Zach Ertz not even covered? One of those plays there was no one within 10 yards of Ertz but thankfully Kyler overthrew him.

  19. I see that Murray’s studying is paying off…not. Even when Philly tried to give them the game, he messed it up. You can’t blame the kicker because Murray put him in a bad situation.

    ……………
They are also 5-0 against teams that either moved or didn’t move their franchise since being established. They are also 5-0 against team with or without domes. Come to think of it, they are also 5-0 against teams that started before and after the helmet era. we could do this all day…

  21. This talk of the Cards almost beating us, or winning.. it’s the same as the SB52 talk about the patriots almost taking the win..
They almost Tied the game. period. no win was guaranteed.. For either one of those 2 games, a lot would’ve needed to happen for the Eagles to lose.. And the Pats would’ve needed a 2pnt conversion as well.. Stop tryin to take the win away from the Eagles.
this ranks up there with broadcasters talking about grown men “scampering” for a xx yard run.. UGH
