Matt Rhule on job security: I have nothing to say about that now

USA TODAY Sports

The Panthers have played to expectations in 2022 and now sit at 1-4 following Sunday’s 37-15 loss to the 49ers.

By all appearances, Carolina head coach Matt Rhule is firmly on the hot seat. His record now stands at 11-27 in three seasons, with the team showing little offensive improvement this year.

After Sunday’s loss, Rhule was asked if he’s had any assurances from team owner David Tepper about his future and — much like last week — Rhule declined to answer.

“I hope you guys can understand, I’m here to talk about the game,” Rhule said, via Steve Reed of the Associated Press. “I’ve always been very forthright with you guys. You know, I have nothing to say about that now. I’m really just here to talk about the game. I would never want to make this about me.”

The Panthers parting ways with Rhule sooner than later could benefit both parties. If he’s on the open market, Rhule is sure to draw interest from college programs searching for a head coach. It would also give the Panthers an opportunity to get an official head start on their coaching search.

Tepper fired former head coach Ron Rivera after Week 13 in 2019 when the coach dropped to 5-7 on the season.

  1. Rhule hasnt shown much but also not sure if there has ever been a head coach that has had a worse group of qbs to work with his entire tenure at carolina. His best qb has been teddy bridgewater

  2. Another college coach totally out of his depth in the NFL. That was clear after last season, but the owner’s ego made him refuse to admit he made a big mistake. I genuinely feel sorry for Panthers fans.

  3. His QB’s suck. I can’t blame him too much. They’ll be drafting someone next April, but that’ll be with a new coach.

  4. I’m always dumbfounded when successful college coaches jettison their current/soon-to-be tenured success for a team bereft with talent. The Carolina Panthers didn’t have the QB nor was in a position to take one – Matt Rhule screwed it up.

  5. An owner can’t fire himself, but he has a choice. He can pattern himself after the Pittsburgh Steelers, a team that wins super bowls with every coach they hire, and then watch them go into the Hall of Fame, or he can pattern himself after the Browns. A team that hires and fires coaches and GM’s so often, they never get any stability. Maybe ask the fans which pattern they prefer. Surprisingly, most fans prefer the Browns, so the owners give their fans what they ask for.

So you’re dumbfounded that Matt Rhule left college for a $62 million dollar contract and chance to coach in the pros? Most other people would be dumbfounded if he turned that down.

  7. He has nothing to say about his job security right now. He’ll have a comment after he’s finished printing copies of his resume and composing cover letters. Realistically, there’s not much advantage to firing him this early in the season. You’re not going to get a permanent replacement until January, and even if you get some bounce with a coaching change, you’re only going from awful to mediocre and getting a worse draft pick.
