Undefeated Eagles likely to have a high first-round draft pick, thanks to the Saints

The Eagles are the NFL’s only undefeated team, but even if they keep it up and end up winning the Super Bowl, they’re likely to be in position to add one of the elite players in the 2023 NFL draft.

That’s because in addition to their own first-round draft pick, the Eagles own the Saints’ first-round pick. And after the Saints fell to 2-5 on Thursday night, that would currently be the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 draft.

Philadelphia acquired New Orleans’ first-round pick in a deal in the 2022 draft that allowed the Saints to acquire a second first-round pick in this year’s draft. That same trade also shipped the Saints’ 2024 second-round pick to the Eagles, so Philly fans will be cheering for Saints losses both this year and next year.

For the Eagles, it’s a great position to be in: Even if they have the 32nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, they’re also going to have a high pick, perhaps in the Top 5. Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman has set up his team to win this year, and to keep winning in the future.

  1. What’s even more miraculous is how Roseman pulled this off in the wake of the Wentz debacle, which would’ve derailed most teams for years. And prior to Wentz, he recovered similarly after the Chip Kelly disaster.

Other GMs should be taking notes.

  2. One of the best GMs, you don’t stick around for that long if you aren’t. In the NFL you should expect a few down years, which then get you the better prospects, before you can make your next run. The best GMs and coaches are the ones that can do that again and again.

  3. The Saints are going to rebound, it won’t be a top ten pick. It was a good trade because the Saints now have one of the top receivers in NFL with Chris Olave.

  4. Well considering olave has been the most spectacular wr it was not a bad move. Dude is by far the most pro ready wr.

He has already put up 500 with missing a game. He is the front runner for offensive rookie of the year.

Now the injuries to all the key players could not be anticipated except maybe Thomas.

Like for instance how many teams would win with being down their top three corners like last game? Then add in the top four receiving targets not named olave.

If they fight to get back to the middle of the pack it is a wash.

Now here is the question could you imagine the eagles with Chris olave?

  5. Before we hand the Eagles the Lombardi trophy lets temember a couple teams also started 6-0 and finished 8-8, just ask Josh McDaniels.

  6. In Philly we LOVE Howie and how he moves around the chess board acquiring picks ….we than we shake our heads in disbelief on how he used them in the draft. I honestly think Lurie has reined him in though and our HC is heavily involved in the draft.

  7. Howie’s off-season has the potential to be one of the best in eagles franchise history. Dare I say, one of the best all time.

    – restructures Cox contract
    – convinces Kelce to resign and not retire
    – saints trade netting a 2022 1st and a potential top 5 in 2024
    – signs Kyzir White
    – Signs Hasaan Redick
    – signs James Bradberry
    – trades for AJ Brown
    – trades up and drafts Jordan Davis
    – drafts Nakobe Dean
    – drafts Cam Jurgens
    – trades for CJ Gardner Johnson

    That’s a pretty legendary off-season

  8. Not sure how teams that like to trade away first round picks expect to find a QB. They obviously can’t pick a qb in round one. They won’t have the ammo to trade for a veteran. Teams like the Rams, Saints and possibly 49ers have a bleak future unless they find a mid round gem. Picks matter.

  9. Chris Olave has been literally the one consistent player for us this year lol. Dennis Allen is the problem.
    And Tyrann is washed. WASHED!

  10. It’s unfortunate that SP had this untouchable feeling around him by Saints fans. He did bring us everything, but he tore it down even faster.

  11. Other owners should be taking notes. Chip Kelly was strike 1. Wentz was strike 2, yet he still kept his job. Most owners would have fired the GM after strike 1.

  12. All this happened because Doug Pedersen decided not to win that last game against us and he got fired…sometimes in life you must lose first before you win…

Yeah, because he would trade it all down and then come up with several good contributing players in various areas along with a couple busts to feed his critics.

I hope Chris Olave was worth it for New Orleans

    ——————————————————————

Actually, he has played very well and has showed that he was NFL-ready from the get-go. Was the price extremely high? Perhaps. But given Thomas’s past few years with injuries, the Saints were looking longer term at the need for a new number 1 receiver, and they have it in Olave

    ====================

When it comes to QBs the Eagles have been fleecing the league going back to the Andy Reid era.

    Kevin Kolb
    Trading away a washed McNabb
    Foles
    Bradford
    AJ Feeley
    etc

None of them worked out for the teams that traded for them. Never trade for a QB from Philly.

You are correct. Roseman can get the team in a mess in a hurry but somehow he is able to get the team out of a mess in a hurry and usually ends up with more picks than he started with. A little stability would be nice. The Eagles will not be able to keep this team together next year without going back into cap hell again. I hope he uses the extra picks to avoid doing that so tough decisions coming.

    Don’t be like the Saints!

  16. All this talk of how good olave is(he is a very good player) and the trade was worth it is garbage. The saints overestimated their qb talent. You don’t “go for it” with questionable qbs.

  17. Trading up in the top 10 for a wr is not worth it. NO would probably like that pick in this coming draft to. Eagles front office is killing it.

  18. And the Eagles have an MVP caliber quarterback and an excellent backup who make $4 million COMBINED while C listers like Ryan Tannehill have $39 million dollar cap hits.

  19. This has nothing to do with Olave. Trevor Penning is the pick from this trade. Olave was the pick from a trade with Washington.

Yes, they do. And mid and late picks are just as important as first rounders. The Saints have excelled over the years at finding mid and late round gems. (Marques Colston, a 7th rounder, retired as the franchise leader in receiving yards and TDs; Alvin Kamara – a 3rd rounder, and arguably the best player on the current team, Terron Armstead, who anchored the left side of the o-line for years, was a mid round pick, to name a few). And, it’s important to get away quickly from problems – CGJ became insubordinate when he didn’t get his extension when he through he should. Saints cut bait from Junior Galette quickly after signing him to a big extension, and he flamed out quickly due to a bad attitude. I hope CGJ does well in Philly, but the Saints believe ‘a year too soon rather than a year too late’ for potential bad actors

  21. Yeah everything looks good now. Howie has been a moron for a long time. Lets ignore the horrible stuff and praise the one time the blind squirrel finds a nut.

Dillard less than ten starts for your 2019 first rounder is what you call a super bust.

Reagor need I say more. Another first round 2020

Derek Barnett another first rounder not much production 2017

We can keep going back if you want you get Carson then Agholor the bust Marcus Smith but odds are Howie will poop the bed again with another first round pick. Heck they spent this years on a run stuffer that has seven tackles and plays a third of the downs.

How far back in eagles drafts do we have to go to find a hit in the first round? All I find is poop in the bed and a couple skid marks for his entire career.

  22. Even if a team goes 17-0 in the regular season but that doesn’t earn them the Lombardi. With the playoffs starts a whole ‘new’ season. In the end, the team able to put the healthiest roster on the field will be the one left standing.

Absolutely. It’s like the Jets at 4-2. Being lucky or constantly playing a team with problems and winning isn’t greatness.

All you have to do is actually watch the team play. That tells you if they are actually good or not.

Too many people look at stat sheets and read hyped headlines.

    The Eagles aen’t winning anything.

    ——————————-

The Eagles clearly have a better shot than the Patriots. I guess you’re still bitter about that SB loss. Philadelphia looks pretty talented.

  26. I don’t think anyone is saying Olave isn’t a really good player. Problem is Saints don’t have a QB. If they continue to suck they traded away their chance to grab one of these top QBs in this years draft. Howie will trade back outta top 5 grab a first n second this year n another first next year. Teams overpay to draft that high to get a QB

  27. There’s only 31 first round picks this year bc of Miami…. So the super bowl winner will be picking 31 (unless it’s Miami)

  28. The Eagles are a solid team, BUT… they literally have the EASIEST Schedule. If the Bucs and Packers are mediocre then they have a cakewalk to the SB and will get crushed by the any of the uber competitive AFC teams.

  29. The Eagles being undefeated is the amazing part of the situation!….
Looking at their HC and qbs, most people should have expected the Saints to be in a down year….

Clearly you don’t “actually watch the team play”, otherwise you’d skip your trolling attempts.

Philly is beating teams while pretty much only scoring in the 2nd quarter of each game. They also have two of the top corners this season and their DL is solid. Anyone that “actually watch the team play” can see they have a talented roster. I think they’ve been fun to watch. Hurts has been a big surprise with his development. Prior to this season, he often took off running after making his first read.

  31. The top teams all have elite QBs. Saints will probably regret not just starting a rebuild and using that first round pick on a qb at the top of the draft. Comparable to the Seahawks. What Geno is doing is admirable, but they are not true contenders. The saints and teams like them will be in what Doug Whaley called QB purgatory. Performing well enough to not get a top qb.

You’re the same person who insisted the AFC East still runs through last-place New England and that the Jets would start the season 0-8. So I look forward to cashing out my Eagles Super Bowl ticket when you’re wrong again on this.

  33. Howie with two picks in the first round next year can do so many things. He is going to move the second of the first round picks in a trade for the following year picking up at least another second round pick for this year in addition to moving the first round pick to 2024. There would have to be an outstanding late first round pick for him to stand pat. He is trying to build something like the NE with Brady where the team is in contention for a conference championship game each year. Hurts is going to be expensive so in order to stay competitive he is going to load the team with high round picks that don’t impact the cap.

  34. saints fans are underrated for their delusion. The team stinks, there’s no quarterback & no first round pick (that will likely be a top 10). Awesome, Chris Olave can play, yep, who’s throwing him the ball going forward? You can’t honestly be happy about this trade if you’re being objective

  35. Don’t worry about first rounders Howie takes having a cap issue. They all stink and don’t get to the next contract. Find me a great first round pick under Howie

  36. Don’t forget Saints have draft capital in trading away SP rights… top 5 pick?!?!?

He drafted Jalen Reagor over Justin Jefferson, enough said.
    ————————————————————–
Drafted Jalen Hurts in the second round of that draft, so you can put that one to bed. You can name a first round miss for every NFL team. Move on and live in the present with the rest of the world.
