Could Nathaniel Hackett be out after Sunday’s game in London?

Despite sky-high expectations, the Broncos have fallen to 2-5. They’re facing the Jaguars in London on Sunday. Quite possibly, Denver will enter the bye at 2-6.

What will that mean for head coach Nathaniel Hackett, who arrived before the team’s new owners did?

Here’s what it could mean, and maybe what it should mean. Some coordinators can become effective head coaches, some can’t. Hackett has proven through seven games that he can’t.

Should he get the rest of the year to prove what we already know? Some guys (like Brian Daboll and Kevin O’Connell) can figure it out right away. Others show us sooner than later that they can’t.

There’s no shame in not thriving as an NFL head coach. Few NFL coaches are able to become an effective head coach. Hackett, like Norv Turner and Wade Phillips, may be better suited to being a coordinator.

For ownership that didn’t hire Hackett, they need to ask themselves whether it makes sense to make an in-season shift to defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. With Evero possibly in line to get head-coaching consideration elsewhere for 2023, why not give him an eight-game on-the-job audition? If they’re already thinking about parting ways with Hackett after the season, why not do it as the bye week arrives and nine games remain to be played?

Regardless, the honeymoon is long since over for Hackett. That’s becoming more and more obvious, every week.

Hackett seemed salty at the start of his post-game press conference on after Sunday’s 16-9 loss to the Jets, when asked about the team’s struggles on offense.

“I’m sick of being up here saying the same thing over and over again,” Hackett said. “The opportunities are there. At some point we have to take it, there’s no excuses. We’ve been in every single game. We have to win these games. As a team, as an offense, defense, everybody. We’ve had these opportunities, we have been in these situations. It’s frustrating being up here having to say the same thing because like I said, those opportunities are there. We have to make them. It’s that simple, it’s the NFL. It’s going to be hard. Especially close games which we’ve been in, you have to come through and win those games.”

Later came a question commonly posed to coaches of struggling teams. How much has the heat increased, given that they’ve won only two of seven games?

“The heat’s always on,” Hackett said. “Anything you want, you want to always try to give yourself a chance to get to the playoffs. We’re behind the eight ball right now, 2-5. We have to find a way to fight ourselves out of this hole.”

Inevitably, Hackett was asked another question that struggling coaches here. Would he consider giving up play-calling duties?

“I think we’ll always look at everything,” Hackett said. “I always look at myself, first and foremost. If there’s something that we all agree that I might hold the team back or anything like that, sure. I don’t think that’s the case. I think there are plays to he had there. I think we have been in and out of the huddle. Everything with communication has been really good. But we’ll look at everything. We’ll always look at everything to try to improve and help this offense.”

Ultimately, the best approach could be to give the whistle to Evero, make the defense the centerpiece of the team, and streamline/simplify the offense. It worked for the Seahawks during quarterback Russell Wilson‘s early years in Seattle. It may be the only way to make things work in Denver.

Whatever ownership decides, the winds of change already seem to be blowing in Denver. The Wal-Mart moguls who are operating the team surely won’t chase one mistake with another one. They’ll make firm and conclusive decisions as needed. And it feels as if something is needed, sooner than later, for a Broncos team that rolled the dice on Hackett becoming an effective head coach.

Again, there’s no shame in the fact that it’s not working. One of the keys to running a non-dysfunctional organization is to not compound a mistake by making another one while trying to justify the first one.

If nothing else, making a bold and big move could help persuade the paying customers that new management isn’t messing around. That vibe is exactly what the Broncos currently seem to need.

  1. Fire Hackett & unload some guys for the picks before trade deadline – reload & try again next season!
Gotta stop this insanity of your clueless HC.

  2. I’m asking the question because I don’t know, has anything at all been done since the Walton’s took over? It would seem dumping the front office would be the better place to start. They started the mess. Good luck Denver fans!

  3. A perfect example of how unprepared he and his team are was at the end of the game. Two plays showed it all. First was on 4th and 3 your QB didn’t understand that a first down was all that mattered and throws to a completely covered receiver in the endzone. Then during that last minute review you stand there waiting for the result of it rather than spending time with your QB saying “if this is overturned and we get the ball back this is what needs to happen…”

  4. George Paton should go before Hackett. Him and Elway made the franchise crippling trade for Russell Wilson then he extended him before ever taking a single snap for the team. Also, he was the one who chose Hackett in the first place.

Paton’s just an extension of the Rick Spielman years in Minnesota and is not the answer in Denver.

  5. I am sure Broncos country mostly agrees with you Mike, but remember owners are more concerned about profits than winning. If they still have fans and people buying their merchandise why would the owner of an NFL team want to pay mutiple people(the coach/ex-coach) when they can pay for less people? Once they realize it is more cost effective(this happens when there are less fans/less merchandise being sold) to pay multiple people then they will do it begrudgingly.

  6. Not to mention, they are married to Russell Wilson for the next 5 years at $40 million per. They aren’t getting “out of this” anytime soon – regardless of who is the HC

  7. Hackett going to be the sacrificial lamb. he is not doing a good job, that is true, but some of the blame has to go on QB1, who cant cook with gasoline and a book of matches anymore. Maybe they are better off trying to get a higher draft pick and load up the O and give Russ 1 more year with more weapons. Von Miller was smart getting out of there.

  8. Hackett’s obv the 1st scapegoat for Russell’s thud of a landing.
But firing Hackett does not fix Russ… that’s a whole nother matter.

  9. I think the certainty the owners will get it right is misplaced. Until they prove they know what they’re doing, the only decision they’ve made was to give Wilson the huge contract. Having money =/= success in the League.

  10. “Some guys (like Brian Daboll and Kevin O’Connell) can figure it out right away.”

Just like Josh McDaniel did in Denver when he started 6-0, think you need to curb your enthusiasm a bit.

  11. Predicting the Denver Broncos might drop to 2-6 by losing to a two win Jacksonville team? Wow, Denver has fallen to an incredible low.

  12. Giving the HC job to Evero may not a wise decision. Evero is a 1st time DC, granted he’s doing a good jod but we should also keep in mind that he inherited Fangios defense. The only guy with HC experience on this staff is Dom Capers. Say what you will about Capers (and there’s things to say) he’s the one with HC experience. Good God this is a mess.

  13. Terrible thing. Always horrible offenses, when he was a play caller and then he suddenly becomes a glorified QB for Aaron Rodgers. LaFleur is the definition of mediocrity. He’s the guy who basically sat Henry, goes to GB with a very good roster, in a terrible division. Look at how they play with jo elite WR and a banged up line.

  14. As a fan of the Broncos I hope that Nathaniel Hackett is let go. Hackett has no clue how to be a head coach in the NFL.

  15. Having your back up quarterback, throw 46 passes in a one score game, while your defense is probably the best in the league doesn’t sound like complementary football to me. They need to establish the run. That’s only reason folks thought the Broncos were a quarterback away, was because they could run the football and play good defense. If you can run the football, it takes a lot of pressure off everybody.

  16. They brought Green Bay’s system and Hackett there for Aaron Rodgers. Unless there’s an extremely unlikely trade of Wilson for Rodgers, it’s time to get the right coach for Wilson. Unfortunately they’re tied to Wilson for the duration 2024.

  17. That organization is a mess. Bad head coach. Bad trade for a prima donna QB who is injured. Depleted draft capital. Denver looks to be a losing team for the indefinite future

  18. Remember, Ben McAdoo went 11-5 in year one, and Jimmy Johnson went 1-15. Sometimes it’s the coach, sometimes it isn’t. Hackett does truly appear to be in way over his head though.

  19. Any descent retail manager such as Walmart and me can tell you that your first loss is your least loss. For instance if you order too many bananas they are going to all get ripe at the same time so mark ‘em down and get what you can before you have to throw them away and take a bigger loss.

The Raiders are only 2-4, so he may actually be on to something with McDaniels

  21. Should have happened after week one. People thumbed me down, but it was obvious. I’ve never seen an HC this bad. Other guys have had bad rosters. This roster is not this terrible. They score 14 points a game in the flag football version of the NFL. Rip the Band-Aid off.

    ————————————-
    Like it was his choice.

  23. Loved Elway as a PLAYER…but ever since he’s had power in the front office ,it’s been awful. Time for Elway to leave the building and come back for nostalgia night
    Events.

  24. The plane trip back from London would be embarrassing whether it’s on the team plane or flying commercial.I can’t see Walmart paying for a private jet.

  25. Calling plays is a major distraction. I’ve done it as an OC and HC. Its fun and its an ego trip. After two seasons I gave it up to manage the game. Coaches are teachers. If you are good at calling plays, find a protégé and teach him. It took Andy Reid halfway through his KC tenure to be able to call plays and manage a game. He used to get roasted for his game management. The dolphins coach was studying his play call sheet last night while the defense was not on the field. Had he not been obsessed with play calling, he would have made a better decision and kicked the field goal to go up two scores on a rookie qb. He got really lucky. I think he’s a smart coach with some juice, but imagine how good the Dolphins could be if he managed the whole game! He can always suggest a play or attacking a player/scheme to the play caller. Not a dolphin fan btw.

  26. Not long ago, we hired one “Hackett” after another and Mara gave each one wayyyyyyy too much time. Rip that band aid off when it becomes obvious, keep shooting and hope you get one. Took us 10 years and those years sckuuuuuueeeed.

  27. Back in the day an offensive coordinator got hired in San Francisco. What a nightmare. They finished the season 2-14. The owner heard all about how some coordinators just can’t make it as head coaches. But the owner was stubborn. The next year is wasn’t all that much better, as the team only managed 6 wins. They were 8-24 the first two seasons with this offensive coordinator trying to be a head coach. The owner was really being stubborn and refused to fire his awful new coach. The third season started out 1-2, although they had a new QB. But that third season somehow got turned around and Bill Walsh won his first Super Bowl. That stubborn owner ended up winning five Super Bowls as the groundwork was being set for the 49ers who ended up becoming the team of the 80’s and the team of the 90’s. It took a couple years to overhaul the roster, but it happened fast. It didn’t happen the first year, or the second year. I’d tell you about the first year with Chuck Noll in Pittsburgh, but I think you get the picture. Hire a good coach and stick with him. They rarely if ever turn the team around without bringing in better players. That doesn’t happen overnight. Did I mention Jimmy Johnson and Dallas?

  28. It’s clear that the Hackett / LeFleur offense has been figured out and no matter who is under center. Both GB and Denver are facing very similar problems: a profound lack of balance on offense, over thought WR routes, and remedial understanding of clock management. The real danger is that we may lose interest of players we need to be successful.

  29. The Packers offense has sucked since he left. If they fire him I’m thinking Green Bay would welcome him with open arms.

  30. Hackett’s done poorly, but it’s his first time in the job. What’s the excuse for how horribly Wilson has played? He’s an established veteran. This isn’t about him having trouble adapting to a new offense. He’s just playing really poorly, missing easy throws, throwing bad interceptions, breaking plays to force the ball to the wrong place, etc.

At some point, the players need to execute. Especially the guy you just signed for a mint – when you expect that kind of money, you can’t just be along for the ride, you need to define your team’s success.

They’re almost certainly already out of playoff contention. Do they keep hitting reset, or do they take the second half of this season to work on getting everyone on the same page for 2023?

  31. As a Chiefs fan, I want to enjoy this, but I respect the rivalry too much– Denver’s incompetence is bad for us and the NFL. This was a proud fan base, sold out Mile High for like 12 years in a row, and now they’ve got 5,000 no shows and people leaving in one score games and in OT? I mean, Mile High Stadium was something to be feared. This Defense is still good. I just don’t know what Denver can do with Russell Wilson, which is why Paton should be fired right along with Hackett.

  32. What good does it do to fire him now? Let him ride out the year. He is correct in that if his $250 mil QB could make some plays they would be 5-2. Wilson wanted to be the man. Well … Broncos traded for the wrong Seahawk QB. LOL.

  33. “What’s the excuse for how horribly Wilson has played? He’s an established veteran. This isn’t about him having trouble adapting to a new offense. He’s just playing really poorly, missing easy throws, throwing bad interceptions, breaking plays to force the ball to the wrong place, etc.” -KEVPFT

Great questions. I think that the offense as currenly designed doesn’t play to Wilson’s strengths at all. There is no running game. This “wide zone” blocking scheme isn’t working, so there is no consistent running threat. Russ has never been great at throwing over the middle, and the WR routes are not allowing Jeudy, Sutton, and Hamler to get any separaration. So yeah, Russ is struggling but I think he’s only 50% to blame. The rest is a scheme that has been figured out.

  34. Hackett had one shot, one opportunity and he blew it…he should be canned soon before Seattle winds up with a top 5 pick

  35. Two months ago, Wilson was crowing that Hackett was an offensive genius. Publicly, Wilson has for the past three weeks gone quiet about Hackett’s genius; which means he’s working behind the scenes to get the HC ousted.

  36. One of the worst hires in the history of the NFL. Just cut your losses and move on. Why did they figure it was such a great idea to RESIGN Russ before he ever took a snap for them??

  37. The best thing Hackett did during his time was hiring his eventual replacement. That’s gonna sting.

  38. Offer him upper level management position at 1 of your Walmart locations as severance for this disaster.

  39. My thought is, and I have no idea if this was true but the got hackett because they thought it would bring rodgers with him. They loaded on signed all the WR got Hackett the last piece of the puzzle was Rodgers and when they didn’t happen they panic-ed and pulled the trigger on Wilson, and then doubled down and gave him a huge contract so here they are. Word to the wise.

  40. It took Andy Reid halfway through his KC tenure to be able to call plays and manage a game.
    ==========

The Chiefs were 2-14 when he took over… Andy immediately got them to 11-5. I believe that is the biggest turnaround in NFL history. Lost the Wild Card game, a 40+ point shootout.

Dead last in offense… to 6th
    25th in defense.. to 5th

    Here endeth the lesson.

  41. Keep in mind that it’s exceedingly rare for a first-year head coach to get fired mid-season. It’s only happened twice since 1997, and that includes last year’s Urban Meyer debacle. Hackett will coach out the year, then be let go, and if he wants to he can retire as a multi-millionare.

  42. I’ve seen every Denver game besides last weeks and watched all others twice (god help me). It takes some time to learn a new offense and Russ has had 2-3 real bad games, but this offense is an abomination. No motion, no play actions, few screens, no boots, repeated crazy illogical deep shots on third/fourth and shorts. I’m probably the first person in America who was calling for Hacketts firing, yelling about it the first night in Seattle when he kicked the 64 yard field goal when they were driving on a terrible defense. Not a single Denver fan in the whole row could figure out what was going, the choice was beyond comprehension, as if the yard lines were mis-printed, it was obvious at that point that despite whatever improvement he might make he had already disqualified himself by making the single worst call imaginable in his very first game as head-coach. Of course, he’s not some creative genius either, comical storyline, he had only called plays once and was fired in Jacksonville after half of one season attempting. Pretty shocking hire, not sure I can watch any more games unless he’s gone after bye starts, as I will just be rooting for them to lose until he gets canned.

  43. “Back in the day an offensive coordinator got hired in San Francisco. What a nightmare. They finished the season 2-14. The third season started out 1-2, although they had a new QB. But that third season somehow got turned around and Bill Walsh won his first Super Bowl.”

They were also 2-14 the season before he got there and looked better his first year with a completely turned over roster. The old NFL was not structured with as much parity and it took far longer to go from worst to first. This is also a better roster than the same team that won 7 games last year and scored 50% more points per game. Bill Walsh was not a first time head coach either and had success at Stanford prior. Finally Bill Walsh never kicked a 64 yard field goal needing 4 yards and with a minute left.

Hackett can’t control the team and has no clue how to run an offense, these are the worst game situational uninspired play calls I can ever recall…. ‘hey lets go shotgun formation every time we are one yard from goal’ … He’s already had more than enough time, somebody else deserves a half season debut to prove they can be anything more than a laughing stock.

  44. The whole coaching staff will be replaced with self checkout machines! The Walmart way is to charge customers to be employees!
