Justin Fields excited to add Chase Claypool

Bears quarterback Justin Fields said today that he was very pleased with the news that the Bears had made a trade to acquire wide receiver Chase Claypool from the Steelers.

“I was excited, of course,” Fields said. “He’s a playmaker. Big body, athletic, fast, great 50/50 ball catcher. . . . Any time you trade for a player like him, you’re just trying to make the team better.”

Fields said the Bears’ front office and coaches have told him that they think he’s improving every week, but he disagreed with any notion that bringing in a young receiver proves the Bears are fully committed to Fields as the long-term answer at quarterback.

“I’m not worried about the next 5-10 years, I’m worried about this week,” Fields said.

Fields said that contrary to some perceptions that the Bears were waving the white flag on this season after trading Robert Quinn and Roquan Smith, he and his teammates — and the Bears’ coaches — believe they can win this year.

“Nobody has that mindset on our team. Everybody on our team, including coaches, we want to win every game,” Fields said.

The 3-5 Bears have an uphill battle to be a playoff team this year, but Fields believes this is a team that is going places.

  1. I’m sure he is……Hopefully Claypool doesn’t turn into a giant locker room problem like Brandon Marshall did for the Bears.

  2. You can bring in a Randy Moss in his prime, but if you can’t get him the ball it means nothing

  3. Bears got Claypool on the cheap through 2023. This is an audition, not a just rebuild. There isn’t a real high-ticket player left that can’t be cut going into next season. Those that work out, great. Those that don’t get cut and replaced.

Harry, Claypool, and Leatherwood are young guys that have been given a second chance with an up and coming team (we hope). Low risk, very high reward seems to be the theme we’re seeing out of Poles. Keep it going.

  4. Good for Fields and hopefully he doesn’t rely on him too much like Baker did with OBJ.

Lots of comments who haven’t actually watched recent Justin Fields games here

And even more from folks who haven’t been following Claypool’s career enough to know he’s a DIVA. If you think he’s not going to be clamoring for the ball and to get PAID you don’t know Chase.

I was thinking the same thing, at first I was very skeptical about Fields. However, the past two games he has been looking like he’s improving.

Which Bears games did you watch?

  8. Justin Fields is the answer to why no NFL GM in his right mind would think he’s getting a franchise QB from Ohio State! Mike Tomczak, a game manager and NOT a franchise QB, is the closest they’ve come in over 37 years!

  9. I’m sure no one else excited about Justin Fields. He is clueless and is such a waste of draft capital.

Who exactly does the ball need to go to more than Claypool now on the Bears? If he wants the ball and gets open, fine, throw it to him! Fields could easily complete 40-50 passes to somebody the rest of the year because there’s little competition for those balls!

Fields will be lucky to complete 40-50 passes the rest of the year combined, much less to Claypool alone.

  12. Claypool a diva? What WR isn’t a diva?

Listening to his presser today, it was anything but. 800+ yards the first two seasons and on track to the same with Pickett and Trubisky.

Great pick up, young team trending up.

  13. I am not comparing Fields to Allen (Buffalo) … Allen is a far more superior and accomplished QB than Fields.

That said, don’t write off Fields yet. Like Allen, he has had nothing around him for his first two years. Everyone was saying he sucks and should get benched. Well, look what happened. He got support and coached up properly. Diggs was the best trade Bills did for Allen and worth whatever they traded Minny for.

Claypool ain’t Diggs. Poles needs to get THAT guy and fix the OL. Then we can see what Fields can do.
