NFL issues comment on news of potential Commanders sale

On Wednesday morning, the Commanders announced that they have hired a firm to assist with the potential sale of the team. Early Wednesday afternoon, the NFL issued a comment on the situation.

“Any potential transaction would have to be presented to the NFL Finance Committee for review and require an affirmative vote by three quarters of the full membership (24 of 32 teams),” Chief NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said.

The league also apparently hopes to address proactively any speculation that Snyder has been nudged toward selling the team, based on the Mary Jo White investigation.

“Mary Jo White is continuing her review,” McCarthy said. “We have no update on a timeline.”

Last week, Commanders outside counsel John Brownlee said during an interview with #PFTPM that White has not yet interviewed Snyder.

Given the potential price of the team and the multi-billionaires who may be trying to buy it, there will likely be no issue for the finance committee. And the key word is “finance”; again, the only requirement to owning an NFL team is having the cash. No other questions are asked, such as whether the person will be good for the franchise, the fans, the league, or the game.

Money talks. And if we’re talking about someone who can pay $5 billion, that’s all that needs to be said.

  1. If the NFL sells the Commanders, we won’t have Snyder to kick around anymore. Sounds good to me. If sold, let’s hope the the new owner will be a lot better.

  2. “the only requirement to owning an NFL team is having the cash. No other questions are asked, such as whether the person will be good for the franchise, the fans, the league, or the game.”

Maybe that’s the problem. You would think there would be more due diligence by the NFL in order to avoid situations like they have with Snyder.

  3. “How to make 5 billion dollars being a jerk.” An upcoming Amazon bestselling memoir by Daniel Snyder. With glowing recommendatons from Roger Goodell and company.

  4. How ridiculous. Draftees coming from miserable circumstances are investigated up and down, to make sure they are worthy of being a high draft pick. But vetting a potential owner’s history and habits is off limits?

  5. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

  6. $5 billion. Sounds like a lot until you realize Elon Musk bought Twitter for the equivalent of 9 NFL teams worth.

  7. “Any potential transaction would have to be presented to the NFL Finance Committee for review and require an affirmative vote by three quarters of the full membership (24 of 32 teams),” Chief NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said. You missed the next thing he said: Then McCarthy stood straight up from his chair and at the top of his lungs bellowed “PREPARE THE RUBBER STAMP!!!!!”

  8. “Elon shoulda bought The DC football franchise instead of Twitter.”

Uh, he still could. $5bil is pocket change for him now.

  9. What an amazing situation to step into as a new owner. Former owner utterly despised so absolutely anything you do will be cheered. New guy is going to be able to design a brand new stadium and stick a new name on the team and the more he does to erase Snyder from memory the more popular he’ll be.

  10. For those advocating for Musk to buy the team…..it would hardly be an upgrade over Snyder.

  11. “ I shudder to think how anyone could be a worse owner than Danny Snyder.”

    Jimmy Haslam says hello

  12. When a sale proposal is made, the entire owner group will show up to unanimously approve it.

Is Mary Jo White actually investigating? Sloths move quicker than her.

Thats why sloths make such poor investigators.

    He should sell to Trump!

    ——————————-

Now thats a media circus scenario the NFL would not touch. So there is in fact something the Finance committee would not approve. It has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with noise level and public scrutiny. The league is going to look at all that and just say “nope”.

  15. For the clowns who keep raising Jeff Bezos’ name as if there’s some conspiracy for him to get the team, what exactly is the conspiracy and what’s your point?! Elaborate!

  16. sbc2556: Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post the ones who have been bashing Dan and the team for years. Not a conspiracy just he really wants this team.

  17. Everyone wants Dan to sell. But there is no guarantee that any new ownership group is going to come in here and turn things around. Now we in the same boat and I can only imagine what the fickle Commander fans will do then

    _____________

Reporting on sexual harassment, assault, and ripping off his fellow owners is considered bashing Snyder? I simply cannot understand why you people support this guy.

I agree that would be a pretty cool conspiracy. So I’m going to confirm it’s true.

If this is the case, then Snyder, as much as I don’t like him, shouldn’t be forced by the NFL to sell the team. The NFL needs to either adopt a code of conduct and ethical behavior by all NFL owners (current and potential) as a condition of ownership, or they need to shut up.

You/They cannot say it’s ONLY about money and then go after someone for abhorrent behavior.

  21. ESPN is reporting the Feds are looking into Commanders. Am I wrong, but this seems like old news? I thought that’s been established? No matter, there’s usually a way for the uber rich to escape… I just hope it comes with a hefty price tag.

  22. I am not an expert but believe me questions are asked long before the potential buyer is even announced.

  23. and then there is this info that just came out today.
A criminal investigation into the Washington Commanders has reportedly been launched by the U.S. attorney’s office in the Eastern District of Virginia in relation to allegations that the team “engaged in financial improprieties.
Snyder may need some cash for a defense lawyer.

  24. Also, can Bezos buy the team with the Amazon Prime contract? I am curious about the nuances of that, especially with Amazon vying for Sunday Ticket.
