Roquan Smith: Focused on Ravens playbook, not contract right now

Linebacker Roquan Smith started on the path to leaving the Bears when he and the team could not find common ground on a contract extension and that path ended earlier this week when he was traded to the Ravens for a pair of draft picks and linebacker A.J. Klein.

One of those picks was a second-rounder and a common reaction to the news was that the Ravens would not have given up such a high pick without the intention of signing Smith to a long-term deal. That may happen, but Smith said that his first order of business is going to be learning the team’s playbook ahead of their Monday night date with the Saints.

“I’m not really focused on that right now,” Smith said, via Ryan Mink of the team’s website. “Everything has happened really, really quickly, so I’m just trying to focus on honing in on this playbook right now, and getting to that once I get to it.”

Smith’s unlikely to create much momentum toward a new deal without having a good handle of the defense, so the approach is likely a wise one for him to take upon his arrival in Baltimore. Should contract talks linger into the offseason, the Ravens will have a couple of negotiations on their hands.

  1. Make sure that you get at least $25m on a 5 year deal, $100m guaranteed. I know that you think you re worth it.

  2. Good luck Baltimore. No one should sign a contract they don’t like … but damn … if you thought Lamar wants the world you have no idea what’s in your future with Smith. And yeah, Claypool will be fun as well

  3. Definitely good thinking. Nothing will showcase and increase individual’s market value than a strong playoff run. The Ravens could be a sleeper. It’ll be fun to see Roquan & Lamar performing with their contracts on the line instead of just the run-of-the-mill multimillionaires playing another game. Here’s rooting for both of them to bring home a Super Bowl Championship.

  4. This was a mistake by the ravens.
Save the money for Lamar, don’t overpay an offball LB

  5. Held out rookie year.
Missed a game vs. the Vikings in ’19 because he “was not acting like himself”
    Held out this year.
Penned a breakup letter that he released via Rapoport trashing the front office.
Finally shows up to play this season after pouting through most of the preseason.
Proceeds to flash some great plays while also getting juked out of his shoes by Reagor for a TD and Taylor and gets trucked on primetime by Wentz
    Gets traded.

So I ask, who else besides Roquan actually thinks he’s worth $20M+ a year?

    Poles made the right call.

You’re only looking at this from your point of view. Maybe Roquan wanted out of Chicago because he didn’t see a future with that team.
