Colts rule Jonathan Taylor out for Sunday

When news came down on Friday that Colts running back Jonathan Taylor wasn’t at practice, it seemed like he wouldn’t be available for Indianapolis’ Sunday matchup against New England.

Now, that is officially the case.

According to multiple reporters, head coach Frank Reich ruled out Taylor in his Friday press conference.

Taylor is dealing with an ankle injury and did not practice all week.

That means quarterback Sam Ehlinger will have to go into his second career start without the star running back, who led the league with 1,811 yards last season. But Taylor has not rushed for 100 yards since putting up 161 in Week One against the Texans. He missed a pair of games before coming back in Week Seven.

Taylor has 462 yards with one touchdown and 16 receptions for 71 yards in 2022.

Via Zak Keefer of TheAthletic.com, Reich noted the team does not have plans to put Taylor on injured reserve at this point.

With running back Nyheim Hines traded to Buffalo earlier this week, Deon Jackson is in line to start. Reich said Phillip Lindsay is likely to get elevated from the practice squad to play.

The Colts also acquired Zack Moss from the Bills in the Hines deal.

Reich also ruled out quarterback Matt Ryan, cornerback Tony Brown, and linebacker Grant Stuard for Sunday’s game against the Patriots.

  1. Since Irsay is doing suck for luck 2.0 they might as well shut Taylor down for the year instead of wasting him/injury damage on meaningless games.

  2. Disastrous year for Taylor and the Colts. Another lost year. The curse of Andrew Luck continues.

  3. Belichick normally takes away a team’s primary weapon. Not sure Indy has one of those at this point with Ehlinger at QB, and being on the road in Foxboro ain’t helping either.

    Best of luck Colts!

  4. Deon Jackson was outstanding when he started a couple of weeks ago. Can he take care of business again?

  5. People were comparing him to King Henry…funny thing is, he wears the the Colts out at a historic rate, best back ever.

RBs have a super short shelf life, so unless you’re a SB contender, taking an RB in RD1 as a hood ornament is a good move, but INdy and Tenn aren’t that.

Huge blunders putting all eggs into one basket.

  7. Another braindead patriot fan commenting. Why on earth would the Colts tank, as you say, when there are numerous worse teams that they have no chance of catching for a top pick? Another genius comment from a clam chowder slurping slob in New England. Deon Jackson will run all over the overrated joke patriots and the Colts d will own macanoodle Jones all day.

  8. The Pats have another chance to push over .500 sans Brady. But not to worry, as a head coach, BB’s record holistically is and will always be below .500.

Who did you say your QB was? And this Deon Jackson is so good they have been saving him on the bench and hiding him as 3rd string so they could spring him on New England in Week 9? Is that right? Got any more clever jokes?

The question will be whether New England gets off to a strong start or not. If they do, the Colts haven’t been a good second half team and could get buried. If they survive the first half it could be competitive. You comment on the NE defense, but the Colts have one of the worst rushing attacks in the league, and NE is close to a top 10 rushing team. The rushing defenses are similar, so this bodes well for NE, as I don’t expect Ehlinger to light it up, but I’d expect the Colts to try and do just that with a more aggressive passing attack due to their poor rushing stats per game. I expect a 7-8 point win for New England, and securing the head to head tie breaker towards a playoff spot. But anything can happen this year. New England has the toughest schedule in the NFL from this week going forward, so they cannot afford to drop this game. Losing the game won’t bury either team, but it will put them one step closer to being out of the race, and the Colts schedule isn’t exactly a cake walk going forward either.

  10. To correct the Belichick record sans Brady:

2001 AFCCG in Pittsburgh, Bledsoe at QB = Win

2008, Brady hurt early in 1st game. Patriots record with a 7th round pick at QB that didn’t even start in college, 11-5

Brady suspended 4 games in 2016. Patriots go 3-1, with two games started by rookie Brissett.

Record without Brady 15-6, 0.714 winning percentage.

    The truth hurts.

It hurts more when you realize how good his record is when you consider his record when he got to choose his own qb. as opposed to being saddled with qbs he knew he had to fire (Kosar/Bledsoe).

BB is the greatest developer of QBs in modern NFL history.

To correct the Belichick record sans Brady:

Incorrect: BB was a head coach in Cleveland – Indeed the truth hurts. Sorry sport.

Um dude? He benched Kosar for Vinny Testaverde, that’s not developing. And he got fired after that season.

  14. There’s always a stud running back just waiting for their opportunity to shine. Welcome Deon.

  15. When all things were equal (organization, teammates), as outlined in my post, Belichick’s record without Brady (actually with novice QBs) was over 70%.

    Nice try.

Brady started the afc championship game. Bledsoe gets more like a save. Not the win. They were up. Plus you’re forgetting the cleveland years. But hey, it doesn’t fit your narrative.

  17. Yup – math was not his strong point. BB = losing record as a head coach. Brady on the other hand in his 40’s goes to a new team (mediocre) new coach/system etc and wins the SB in his first season there. Brady was the system in NE…BB along for the ride. And now exposed again for exactly what he was pre-Brady….a losing head coach who was fired for that. Pathetic.

  18. Exactly – truth hurts.
As a head coach BB has a LOSING record sans Brady.

    ——

Want more truth? 5 years after he retires, he will be a first ballot HOF entry. And you’ll get to hear about for months before it happens . It’s your never ending nightmare!

  19. And you’ll get to hear about for months before it happens

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yes, months of talks on how he was a product of Brady.

  20. Yes, months of talks on how he was a product of Brady.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Exactly he should have retired when Brady left, to preclude being exposed again. He is literally the same as he was in Cleveland.

  21. wins the SB in his first season there.
    —-
Brady didn’t win sweet jack squat. His teammates won it for him. There’s a difference.

As is the case with every single one of Brady’s rings he never did anything to earn those titles. Any QB could have benefited from the team shutting down the greatest show on turf, holding Mahomes and a crippled OL to 9 points, Malcolm Butler interception, and so on.

Most overrated athlete in sports history by a landslide. He ain’t all that. I’m glad he doesn’t play for my team anymore 🙂 Now we can get a good QB that can actually win titles not a system QB that we pretend did anything to earn them. Not to mention the cheating suspension.
