Tom Brady, Todd Bowles have differing takes on the Buccaneers’ game-day effort

As the Buccaneers try to put early-season dysfunction in the rear-view mirror and chase an NFC South championship, the head coach and the team’s most important player have differing takes on the key question of whether, when it’s time to play games, the players are showing enough effort.

The folks at JoeBucsFan.com have highlighted the clashing characterizations. First, here’s Brady from earlier in the week on his Let’s Go! podcast.

“There’s definitely some things we do well,” Brady said, via JoeBucsFan.com. “There’s a lot of things we don’t do well. I think too much of good, bad, good, bad, good, bad, leaves you average. And no one’s trying to be average. If you want to be a great team, you’ve got to be way better than average. So correcting our mistakes, improving our effort — which, that’s probably the most embarrassing part of our team is our effort level on game day, and that’s something we better fix.”

Bowles, appearing the following day on the Buccaneers Radio Network, made it clear that he doesn’t believe effort is the issue.

“It was huge [to beat the Rams] after losing three weeks in a row, you get very sour and you have a very sour taste in your mouth for a long time, not from lack of effort, but lack of execution, lack of doing things right,” Bowles said.

As noted by JoeBucsFan.com, Bowles wasn’t asked about effort. He mentioned it on his own. Which invites speculation that Bowles wanted to make the point about the team’s effort, specifically to counter Brady’s position that it has been “embarrassing.”

It makes sense for Bowles to push back. He’s the one responsible for ensuring that the players muster the appropriate effort when it’s time to play. If the effort is “embarrassing,” the embarrassment traces to Bowles.

Whatever the reason, the results haven’t been good enough. But the Bucs have a record good enough to put them in first place in the division with eight games to play.

  1. Brady got what he asked for. Old, pricey, egos, no depth, cap hell, etc.

And a super bowl trophy, don’t forget that. Meanwhile his old team hasn’t won a playoff game.

  2. Man it will sure be nice when we won’t have to be force fed
our daily Tom Brady news. Sorry to offend anyone but
after 20 plus years it’s gotten really old now.

  3. He got what he wanted. He proved he is the goat and more important than Bill. 7 suberbowls. How’s the pats offense look 😆

  4. Tom Brady revered to the mean in one and a half seasons. His team is average. His own words. Yet somehow he was able to stay above average for 20 years with the Pats. Coaching and a good GM matter. Here’s your proof Bill and Brady both needed each other. Its not one vs the other. To be that good for that long required both of them.

Don’t apologize! It was exhausting 15 years ago.

Sad thing is, now that his family isn’t holding him back, he’ll probably play 5 more years.

  6. He proved what exactly? went to a Team that was a top DVOA team already but had a QB who threw 30 interceptions in 2019. Got very favorable officiating in the last 3 playoff games of 2020. And he made the team mortgage the future by creating cap hell after he walks out the door when they to Dallas at home January 15, 2023

  7. How’s the pats offense look 😆

They average more points per game than Tampa does

Anyway, It’s obvious coaching matters just by what Brady says. Motivation is a coaches job, and it’s obvious Bowles can’t do it like BB can. Pats are 5-4 , TB is 4-5….I don’t think anyone would say that the Pats are more talented so how do explain that unless you look at coaching

  8. As Darth Hoodie smirks…Brady & Belichick were some kind of duo – similar but very different than Montana/Walsh, Bradshaw/Knoll because Brady/Belichick won 6 together and it’s tough to develop that kind of chemistry between HC & QB. Bruce Arians doesn’t equate because he didn’t follow up – knowing his team was “one & done” gifted an at home Super Bowl by the NFL.

  9. Hopefully he will be embarrassed enough this year and quit so the NFL can get back to important things like pretending Byron Sandwich would make a good head coach.

Wait until he starts his TV gig. All of his co-hosts will be sucking up and telling endless stories of his successes on the field. They’ll probably have a giant picture of him on the set. We’ll never escape it.

  11. Brady’s not wrong about the effort.
Indifferent and disinterested is the best way to describe how many Bucs, especially on defence, have played during their recent doldrums.
Like it or not, emotion is a big part of the game, and Tampa have been completely lacking in fire these past few weeks.

I agree that motivation is the coach’s responsibility along with the veteran players (think Ray Lewis). However, at this point I’m wondering how talented this current edition of the Bucs really is. The receiving corp isn’t the same as it was with Gronk and AB gone, and Godwin mostly injured. The guys that are left (Evans, Miller) are dropping as many passes as they catch. The O-line doesn’t protect Brady so well anymore with Marpet gone and several injuries, and not surprisingly their rushing yards are way down as well. The D-line is limping along now with Shaq Barrett injured, Suh gone, Hicks injured and so-so play from others.
This team has played a lot of football the last 2+ years, they’re getting older and are short on cap room after some big money signings to keep the gang together. That means they have some holes and are short on depth. We saw the start of the decline at times last year and it’s a full blown free fall at this point. I don’t see the Bucs making the playoffs this year, even in a soft division.

  13. I don’t think Brady would give a damn if a receiver gave it his all on game if he’s running the wrong routes because he doesn’t put the study time or film time in. That’s what Brady thinks by effort…the entire package.

Still better than BB and the Patriots as a whole since he left. Nothing else said matters or makes a difference. Fact is a Fact. All of the other BS about the refs and everything else is subjective and means nothing.

  15. Are you commenters watching football – “Brady got what he deserved”? Uh… let’s see:
YEAR ONE with the Bucs – won the Super Bowl.

YEAR TWO – led them to their best record in franchise history (13-4) and despite losing 3 of their top 4 receivers for the playoffs (Godwin, AB, etc.) came within one play of beating the Rams who went on to win the Super Bowl.

YEAR THREE – despite tons of very predictable struggles with new receivers and 3/5 of a new offensive line and a new heads coach, the team is in first place and obviously going to do the “Brady run” over the final half of the season.

Come on!! We’ve seen this movie 21 times. They’re about to surge so Brady can have one last great story note (leading his team back from the brink) to go off into the sunset on.

Don’t see Mac gets better with Belichick’s “developing”, actually he has been worse.

  17. Got very favorable officiating in the last 3 playoff games of 2020.

When all else fails blame the officiating. The offense setting a record by scoring 30 or more points in their 4 playoff games – a record – is what won them the SB. The D in the SB was amazing. Fun to watch.
