Geno Smith: Wristband “smooths out the operation” on offense

Geno Smith‘s wristband became fodder for conversation this week and the Seahawks quarterback got his chance to weigh in on it from Munich on Thursday.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll called it a “big help” to the offense while referencing former Seahawk Russell Wilson‘s “resistance” to wearing one when he played for the team. Wilson fired back from Denver that he won a lot of games in Seattle, but Smith didn’t add to the sniping when he was asked about wearing the wristband.

“I’ve done the wrist band a number of times in my career at all levels and I think we’ve done it here, as well,” Smith said, via Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. “That’s something that helps just eliminate a coach calling a 10-word play and me calling a 10-word play right after it. It just takes time for all of that to happen. You go right to the wristband. It sort of smooths out the operation and makes things faster.”

Smith also avoided taking the bait when he was asked if he followed Wilson’s lead and spent the flight to Germany doing high knees up and down the aisle of the team’s plane. Smith said it was good to get out on the field Thursday and that he was looking forward to practice on Friday before trying to continue his run of strong play against the Bucs on Sunday.

  1. How are we still talking about wristbands for so many days? Wristbands? I can hear the Jim Mora playoffs video in my head… “Wristbands? You want to talk about wristbands? You kidding me? Wristbands?”

It’s more like the Allen Iverson rant….”we’re talking about wristbands, man”….wristbands…not the real play-calling, but wristbands.”

  3. Look, I’m no longer any kind of fan of Russ, but this wristband stuff, and claims that Pete and Russ are taking shots at one another is just commentators looking for something to fill airtime or word counts. If these comments from Russ and Pete are all the evidence of bad blood between them that anyone can find, I’d take either one of them as a sworn enemy. It’s a nothingburger.

Maybe Russ was a prima donna. I don’t want him back, and we clearly won the trade. But he’s not “firing back” at Pete by saying that we won a lot of games without him wearing a wristband. That’s simply a fact. Reporters are throwing chum in the water here and looking for anyone to bite.

  4. Im a life long Buffalo Bills fan. I watched Geno get his brains beat in too many times playing in NY and elsewhere. Now I am very happy for Geno. Gotta love a guy that was forced to stumble around the NFL for 12 years and finally got his Chance and is making the absolute best of it.
Love this guy and he is my vote for Comeback Player of the Year. He sets a great example. Go Geno!

  5. Seems to me that Pete started this spat and Wilson responded.
Good for geno to do well. I still wonder if he’s truly a franchise QB. At one point Keenum looked like it too.

Pete was asked why the Offense was working so much better this season than last season. So he answered the question Honestly, seems Pretty Simple…

    Go Hawks!

And the wristband is all he could come up with or perhaps he mentioned other things too (I didn’t read the interview)

  8. Geno is playing better and remains above the fray. Love it. Comeback player of the year, without a doubt.
