Report: Josh Allen set to start for Bills

The Bills may have dodged a bullet with quarterback Josh Allen’s elbow injury.

Allen is set to start tomorrow against the Vikings, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

That decision came after Allen was able to grip a football and do some throwing at Friday’s practice.

The Bills are not elevating third-string quarterback Matt Barkley from the practice squad, meaning it will just be Allen and backup Case Keenum available at quarterback on Sunday. If the Bills doubted Allen could go, they would call Barkley up, so from all indications they think Allen will be ready to play, and Buffalo can breathe a sigh of relief.

  1. YES!!! BILLS FAN & I HAVE ALLEN IN BOTH MY FANTASY LEAUGES!! ALLEN & MAHOMES BEST QB’S. AS LONG AS HE IS HEALTHY & NOT GOING TO DANGER HIS FUTURE.

  2. I’m surprised. I don’t know how he feels, obviously, just thought they’d rest him a week and err on the side of caution.

  3. It could also mean the Bills feel confident that Allen could step in if needed and will be backing up Keenum in an attempt to give his arm a rest.

  4. That’s a shame. I was looking forward to watching the two Minnesota Miracle players, Keenum and Diggs, go into the Vikings stadium to face their old team.

  5. Sweet Baby Jesus Thank you I mean the world was acting like this was the SuperBowl.

Good luck to both teams this will be a good close game.

No Sammy Watkins last min heroics like in 2014 – SKOL!

  6. I’m glad. I want to Vikings tested to see where they’re at, no skate by against an backup.

  7. There is a temper tantrum being thrown in West Virginia right about now! Sorry Viking fans, you’re going to have to actually play a good team for a change.

  8. A team built around a single player cannot avoid this dilemma.

Risk a game or risk the season?

Packers are learning that all eggs in their Rodgers basket can have disastrous consequences.

Are Bills about to learn this lesson too?

  9. Seems like a dumb move; unless Allen is good enough to back up Case. Would be a mistake to start Allen.

  10. He may start but he also may not finish with Za’Darius Smith and Danielle Hunter out there. Bills better be absolutely sure there’s no risk of further injury or their season could end tomorrow.

  11. Josh is a beast and top 5 QB easily. But if he has risk of further injury and letting his pride get in the way of this decision then it’s the wrong decision. Hope he is really okay and doesn’t further injure his elbow.

  12. That’s a shame. I was looking forward to watching the two Minnesota Miracle players, Keenum and Diggs, go into the Vikings stadium to face their old team.

Would be cool, except the game is in Buffalo.

  13. Smoke screen he was playing all along. They were resting him. No need for him to throw in practice. Want see how the Vikings stack up against a good team.

just a heads up radar773……the game is in Buffalo, after this 1 we have 5 outta 6 here at home .

  15. Is Buffalo truly this reliant on Allen to the point Bills fans think they won the lottery simply because he’s not going to sit out a game?

  16. “A team built around a single player cannot avoid this dilemma.”

Nearly any reliable source would tell you the Bills have one the best, if not the best roster in all of football. Is Josh Allen the primary feature? Of course he is. If you have that option available you use it to your advantage as much as possible or the GM finds someone who will.
If the Bills started Case Keenum they’re probably still -3 against a 7-1 team because there’s still a very good defense and enough weapons to do enough to win.

  17. As a Vikes fan I think this is a mistake by the Bills. Rest Allen for a week and probably still win. Our secondary is overrated and we just put Dantzler (starting CB) on IR. Keenum would be up for this game. But I guess we’ll see what happens tomorrow.

  18. Love the clueless comments about building around a single player or rushing home back. The bills are the deepest team in the league by far. They’ve proved it over and over decimated by injuries and haven’t missed a beat. The bills are not gonna risk a season for one game regardless of opponent. If Allen wasn’t safe to play they’d rest him. Pay attention. The bills have sat out key players all yeah – I’m not sure when we’re actually healthy to be honest.

This team is worried about the playoffs and while we want home field they aren’t risking not having him at all cs missing a few games. If he’s good to go he’s good to go.

    Should be a good game

What’s sad is I suspect the Bills could beat my Patriots with Woody Allen at QB

The Pats beat the Bills last year and your Jets just beat them last Sunday.

Yet, somehow the Pats who just beat the lowly Jets and will beat them in a weak, have zero chance agains the Bills.

    Gotcha.

  20. In a 17 game season this is one game that both teams could rest injured players. Hate to see someone get lost for the season in this game.

  21. So again Keenum fails to make it onto the field as a back up just like last year in CLE. Hope Allen’s injury fares better than Baker’s did.

You may want to brush up on the difference of spelling between week and weak.

  23. The Bills do not have the deepest or best roster in the NFL. It’s laughable to suggest they do.
They have a collection of mediocre running backs, an average offensive line with questionable depth, a good receiving corps topped by one of the best wide receivers in the game, a decent front seven on defence but without a true game wrecker in their prime, an excellent secondary that is riddled with injuries, and a quarterback who is in the argument for the best in the league.
It’s not a one man team, but much like most NFL franchises, if their star QB goes down, this isn’t a playoff team. They can be, and have been, beat by several teams in the league regardless of how healthy Buffalo is.
And that’s why it seems reckless for them to start Allen if he’s not really ready to go. Winning an extra game or two in November is meaningless if it means there’s a chance that it impacts his health for the playoffs or his career.

  24. It could be that Allen was never really hurt that bad, and it was much so about nothing. Maybe it was all precautionary. He might be as healthy as opening day.

  25. Sounds like a big mistake. It’s a long season, and they will need to be in their best shape at the end of it. Fighting through a nagging injury with no more breaks ahead just doesn’t seem like it will end well.

There are no ideal games to take off from here out, but this is the closest thing to it. The pile of division games ahead is what will determine the division winner, not this game against some random non-conference opponent. This seems like they’re just not thinking ahead.

  26. Of course the Bills are a good/great team without Allen but not elite. So for their sake he better be healthy otherwise this is stupid. Risk the season for one game? I think the Bills could beat my Vikings with Keenum, they could beat a lot of teams with Keenum but without Allen they are probably one and done in the playoffs…

Agrred. I don’t expect them to beat a legit Super Bowl team at their field. But it would be nice to see them less overwhelmed than they were in Philly.

  28. It’s kind of funny that fans who have ZERO idea what the state of his health is are saying that it’s “reckless” to start him, or that they’re rushing him back, or that he should sit a few weeks.

Based on what? Their gut feeling? Let the pro’s make these decisions. The Bills don’t rush players back.

  29. For their sake, hopefully that means there wasn’t any real damage to the UCL at all

  30. If Allen injures his elbow further playing in this pointless non conference game & is forced into IR for the rest of this season – McDermott deserves to be fired!

  31. I think the Vikings will win this game. Everybody overlooks them. They’re solid, methodical. .

  32. “That decision came after Allen was able to grip a football and do some throwing at Friday’s practice.”

Gee, what great news. Are we to read into that that he wasn’t able to grip a football and throw much during the week? If so, absolutely assinine decision to start him.

This is the kind of injury that if not guarded up front, might not merely cost him the season or games later on, but could very well alter his entire career.

Particularly the way he’s been playing the last game-and-a-half. I’m thinkin’ that starting Keenan was the right call. Oh well, let’s hope that the team isn’t thinking with their dicks and that Allen’s not simply trying to be a “tough-guy” here and play when he shouldn’t. He doesn’t have anything to prove in that regard, let the team take a few for him for a week or two while he gives the Bills the best chances for both the playoffs THIS season as well as in future seasons!

    GO BILLS!!!

  33. Throw Josh throw. Sling that ball 69 times and 1 up Mahomes. Win and get back into the MVP discussion.

Or, throw your arm out on pass #52 and kiss this magical season goodbye.

I guess you mentally suppressed the playoff game last year where the Bills scored a TD on every possession

  35. I think this is a bad decision. That is a career-shortening opportunity. I am not enthusiastic about Allen throwing like a late-stage Roethlisberger.

  36. If the Vikings lose, let me be the first to remind the packer fans, no Vikings fans have predicted a SB this year, and we acknowledge the Bills will be a very tough opponent.
