Thursday night ratings bottom out, but a bump is coming

Amazon expected better. The good news is that better could be coming.

After telling advertisers that it would have an average of 12.5 million viewers for Thursday Night Football on Prime Video and then quibbling with Nielsen as to the accuracy of its numbers, Amazon Prime has seen the official ratings slip to a season low.

Via SportsMediaWatch.com, the Week 10 games between the Falcons an the Panthers averaged 6.8 million viewers. That’s the smallest audience of 2022.

It also dragged the season average under 10 million for the first time. Currently, with nine games played, Amazon’s average viewership is 9.65 million.

Amazon disagrees with the Nielsen numbers, because of course it does. Amazon insists that the season average is 11.4 million.

Whatever the real numbers, they’ll be getting better. In two nights, the Packers host the Titans. Then, after taking a week off for Thanksgiving, it’s Bills at Patriots. Then Raiders at Rams. (OK, that one won’t be so good.) Next, 49ers at Seahawks. After that, Jaguars at Jets. (Thanks to the home team, it should do well — especially in the local market via broadcast TV.)

The Amazon season ends with Cowboys at Titans. The key there is “Cowboys.” They’ll deliver, even if they were playing a team from the WGAFFL.

So, yes, the numbers will improve. Still, they’ll likely fall short of the preseason expectations.

But that’s fine. The expectations were always too high. Coming close should count as a win, especially in the first year of the NFL’s streaming experiment.

  1. Who picked the games for Amazon…

They have literally been the worst game on the schedule every week

  2. I fully realize that Amazon has a major $$$ reason to inflate their numbers, but the reality is that they are the ones who have the servers that can count total stream connections. Not Nielsen. Nielsen might use excellent statistical projections, but analysis always takes a back seat to actual and real data.

Amazon and Nielsen might quibble over party/bar viewership counting, but Amazon 100% knows the total stream connection count at all times.

  3. If I decide to check in on the game, it takes 10 minutes before I can actually get to it. It isn’t worth it.

  4. If people can’t press guide on their cable and find the game, they won’t bother unless a special matchup is on Thursday night.

  5. Amazon would have been smart to say they expected 10,000 viewers for TNF. Then if 100,000 people viewed in, they would have looked like the greatest thing since the internet was invented.

  6. You know those ratings systems are flawed! They don’t take into account households with two tv’s and other things of that nature!

  7. TNF has no crowd noise like we’re used to hearing. It’s very strange and makes for a boring game.

  8. If Bezos actually goes through with the Commanders purchase, what are the odds he tries to leverage a flex option the likes of NBC with SNF? As horrendous that would be for teams, money does talk.

  9. I’d rather watch Major League Baseball than Thursday night football and that’s saying a lot.

  10. Sorry Peter, but going to an NFL game, regardless of location, and hearing a John Denver song, never made my bucket list.

They should go poach that guy from the Colts.

  12. Not sure why you question the Amazon numbers when the Nielsen ones are the ones to question. Amazon can tell who watches, how long and it’s accurate. Nielsen takes a small sample size and then does an estimate.

  13. What a waste to watch that Russell(LOOK AT ME )Wilson played sh*ty game. But I did make extra $$$ that Broncos lost. Thx Russ!

  14. A lot of people got 30 day trials and dropped it after the 30 days. It’s a terrible presentation. Even with Al Michales they can’t put enough lipstick on that pig.

  15. Football should not be played on Thursdays. It is a way too quick turn around for the players. Then again it is about money, not player safety.

  16. Easy to get to. Pretty convenient. It’s just been really bad and boring games. Plus the games sound like there are no fans in the stands. Weird stuff

  17. Did the geniuses at Amazon think they could just put on a game between below average teams with little national interest, and fans would be falling over themselves to watch?
They may have re-invented retail, but they don’t have a clue what football fans want to watch.

  18. NOT even about to deal with Amazon….
Record it off NFL network around midnight and watch next morning…

  19. ive had prime for years…
    .
i might tune in, but if it stays on for any significant amount of time, its because I’m messing with my phone.

  20. Amazon can have all the Thursday night games they want, but please, please, PLEASE get Sunday Ticket off DirectTV!

  21. In addition why is Amazon bombarding fans with so many commercials on a pay per view event?

  22. Thursday night games are duds more often than not. This season has been as bad or worse, I think. When you have Al Michaels exclaiming how bad the quality of a game is DURing the game…it’s bad. I can imagine him asking himself during the Colts/Broncos game…”I left NBC, Sunday Nights for this?”

  23. Al Michaels has become completely irrelevant. Every game is unwatchable lol hope he got paid well

This is either false or you have no idea how to use Amazon Prime. I have seen my son plug his computer into my non-smart TV and have the game on in less than 30 seconds.

  26. Amazon is laying off 10,000 employees before the holiday shopping season. The numbers don’t lie.

  27. Want to watch the game-log in, don’t have an account sign up, enter your password oh, forgot your password? Submit your email, re enter your username. Most baby boomers (the people watching the games) have given up by now

  28. Thursday night games are bad, and we all know why. So let’s keep talking about it like we are surprised.

  29. Most people watch on mobile devices, not TVs. NFL already says this. For all you people complaining about it not being one click away on TV.

  30. I love how the Anchorman reference from gforce went over everyone’s heads. As for Amazon, sorry, I’m a channel flipper during games so it’s highly annoying to watch on a streaming network. And the sideline reporter they have is terrible.

  31. I watched the game only because I’m a Panthers fan. That was the only Thursday night game I’ve seen this year. I doubt I’ll see another.

  32. Same old people saying they won’t watch TNF, the morning after they just watched it. Again. Stop spouting off about not watching when im fact you are, every week!

  33. Two teams with no stars, no chance at winning the Super Bowl and anemic fanbases are not going to attract viewers.

  34. Unless the team that is “your team” is playing, why would anybody log in and stream a game that you have zero interest in. It used to be if you were channel surfing you might stop on it. That’s no longer the case.

  35. Yep Amazon loves to fudge the numbers, just like they have done with The Rings of Power. Heck they invested what, a billion dollars into that and its been a disaster. So much that Amazon even had to control the reviews that were coming out. Just saying, all that for that show, its no surprise they are trying to fudge the numbers for TNF

  36. People complaining that it’s too hard to find the games need to figure it out. In ten years, it’ll all be streaming. The NFL didn’t go to Amazon because of any reason other than the only reason they do anything: money.

  37. After the debacle with Snyder, I don’t think the NFL is going to let Twitter’s Bezos the clown anywhere near a franchise..

Nobody wants to pay the Amazon fee
    ______________

Amazon Prime has 148.6 million subscribers in the US as of January 5, 2022. There is no additional fee to watch TNF.

Either you are mixing up billionaires, or I just have no idea what you are talking about.

  41. My biggest beef is quality of picture. My TV is maybe 8 yrs old and works perfectly EXCEPT for Thursday night football. It pixilates and buffers and skips. The game is almost unwatchable. Anyone out there have any solutions?

  42. Fortunately for Amazon here is that Prime is a good deal for many other reasons and will still stand up just fine without football help.

Understandable, I feel the same way. However, we have to realize that anyone under 35 is used to watching movies, television, sports, literally everything on their phones. It is perfectly normal for younger folks.

  44. I haven’t watched 1 second of a Thursday game all season. Most of the time it’s noon on Friday before I even remember there was a game the previous night.

  45. First of all. The Thursday night line up of games so far has been horrible. I don’t care what network had these games, they’re unwatchable.

Secondly, the broadcasting is awful.. As much as I love Al Michaels, you can tell he hates it and is just mailing it in. Do you blame him working with Herbstreet??? He’s a college analyst and should go back to college. He brings nothing to the broadcast and Michael’s knows it too.

So, Amazon has two major issues or hurdles they’ll need to overcome. One they can control in trying to improve the broadcasting/streaming experience. The other, they don’t have much control over the scheduling and what games they get.

Bozo, should have looked at the schedule of games he was getting before forking over all of that money to the shield. Even a high school analyst could have told you no one will be watching these games, let alone pay to stream them….

Welcome to the world of NFL advertising and sponsorships. As much clought as Amazon thinks it has, nobody is stronger than the SHEILD…. Better luck next year Amazon.

    ——-

Remember though, that the players get 49% of the money taken in, so I guess they made their choice when they voted for a CBA that had Thursday games.

  47. Patriots vs Bills will be a draw. The Patriots are always a big draw. The Patriots could run the ball 43 times and throw it 3 times, and it would still somehow be exciting and draw a lot of viewers.

  48. All I want to know is who negotiated on behalf of Amazon? When the NFL tells you, you don’t get the opening Thursday game that is when you walk away from the table.
