Matt LaFleur: Kylin Hill was cut because being a Packer is a privilege and we have standards

Packers coach Matt LaFleur was surprisingly candid in his explanation of the decision to cut running back Kylin Hill this week, indicating that Hill didn’t conduct himself the way the Packers expect of their players.

“Being a member of the Green Bay Packers, it’s a privilege,” LaFleur said. “There are standards and expectations that are placed on every member of this team that we expect guys to live up to. I appreciate what Kylin’s been through, I know it hasn’t been easy coming back from that knee injury that he suffered a year ago, that was pretty devastating. He’s a guy we had high expectations for, and realize he’s in a loaded room, but regardless of your role big or small, we expect guys to come to work and be supportive and own that role to the best of your ability. If you don’t do that, that’s what happened.”

Asked if the decision to cut Hill was less about what kind of football player he is than about other things away from the field, LaFleur answered, “Yeah, I would say so.”

Reading between the lines, LaFleur seemed to be suggesting that Hill — who has played just one offensive snap this season — was unhappy with his playing time behind Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon and didn’t handle his unhappiness appropriately. Now Hill will hope he can catch on with another team, one that will give him the playing time the Packers haven’t.

  1. I hope he finds success wherever he lands. We did notice the Bears placed a running back on IR same day Hill was cut. Maybe there’s an opportunity in Chicago.

  2. The selfishness and poor behavior in the current crop of professional athletes seems to be getting worse.

  3. Well if that’s the case you should cut Rodgers, because he’s only interested in himself. He could care less about any Green Bay standards

  4. “ we expect guys to come to work and be supportive and own that role to the best of your ability.”——— But…..not for all players….

  5. Imagine being so clueless that you can’t just act like a grown civil adult in exchange for making big money to play a game as your career. Now imagine being a roster bubble kind of guy and still doing that.

  6. Maybe LaFleur should be cut, as he is not living up to Packer standards as a coach. He looked like a little boy getting scolded by his daddy when Rodgers yelled at him for calling a stupid play. I am sure you checked with Prince Aaron before you cut Hill.

  7. If the Packers truly have “standards and expectations that are placed on every member of this team that we expect guys to live up to”, how is Aaron Rodgers still on the team?

I guess Jordan Love being the alternative is the answer.

  8. Playing for the Packers is not a privilege anymore – the whole organization is a mess & I’d consider it to being a form of punishment or demotion for having to play for them. And LeFleur with his “standards” remark is laughable & knows he himself probably should’ve been fired already!

  9. Of course it does unless your first name begins with an “A” and your last name begins with an “R”…..

  10. Oh please! Standards and privileges? so what Aaron Rodgers have been doing is up to the Packers’ standards because he’s so privileged? (missing OTAs, throwing teammates under the bus, etc)

  11. Nice to see LaFleur take such a strong stand with a third string RB while he apologizes to Rodgers for forcing him to yell at him, lol.

  12. We had to read between the lines – had no idea who this guys is. On the other hand, we all recognize the guy whose been LaFluer a tongue lashing in front of national audiences almost every week thus far. No punishment for him?

  13. Funny that some commenters don’t understand why the reigning 4 x MVP can get away with things a schlub can’t. First year watching football fellas?

  14. Don’t tell anyone, but those ‘standards’ don’t apply to everyone, especially the chosen few (wink! wink!)

  15. I think he meant to say they have double standards. Aaron Rodgers gets away with plenty of poor behavior there.

  16. What about a high-profile privileged employee that used his national platform to blatantly lie about the conditions of a worldwide health crisis, affecting untold others with his self-serving and purposeful misdirection? Is there anything about that in the GBP Rule Book?

  17. On the other hand, we all recognize the guy whose been LaFluer a tongue lashing in front of national audiences almost every week thus far. No punishment for him?

Yeah Kylin Hill is not and should not be treated the same as Aaron Rodgers. Like him or not (and i don`t) Rodgers is the 2 time reigning MVP and Hill was a marginal backup player BEFORE the knee injury. In every business in the world the more valuable you are the better you will be treated and the more you can get away with. If you spent 15 years excelling at your job and got treated the same as a new hire how would you feel? Don`t be a hypocrite.

  18. Really “refreshing” for a supplicant Head Coach to cut a 3rd-stringer with one snap under his belt. Ha! Lafleur is a joke.

  19. LeFleur would never have the guts to say that to his quarterback, who these standards obviously don’t apply to. What a joke.

  20. Disgruntled? Let’s see, Adams, MVS,Smith have all said they were dam glad to not be a packer anymore and they were playing on a winning team. That is saying something about the culture.
I also remember a potential free agent saying the offer he got was insulting and passed. So apparently it goes both ways.
The real problem, many players are forced out due to crap offers and have to start over somewhere else.

  21. Where is LaFleur’s standard for standing up for himself after rodgers fuses him out in front of everyone?
    Packers standards;kiss Aaron Rodgers butt

  22. 7th round pick with 12 touches in his career. Non-story, apart from LaFleur’s ridiculous ‘standards’ comments.

  23. Sure would be interesting to see exactly what Hill said to get cut from a high paying job.his mouth overtook his brain this time because coming off that serious injury he once again must prove he is still an nfl quality running back who are a dime a dozen these days.he should have given some serious consideration to the six figures on his bi monthly paycheck before opening his mouth.hope he saved some of his high salary,he will now need it.

  24. As long as Aaron Rodgers gets the job done he will always be the exception to the Packers rules.lets just see if he still has that same pull with Packers management when he is 40 years old next year and doesnt lead them to the playoffs again this season.one thing is clear, management is surely taking notes on Rodgers behavior this season and it will come up for review before next season arrives.

Packers cut Amari Rodgers already, goofball. (I know who you mean).

  26. The comment by johnc44 was one of the few sensible ones made here so far. The others were nothing but clueless rants. But, what can we expect from jealous Packers haters?

Oh yes, Adams, he sure is playing for a winning team. Smith plays for a team that has zero trophies and will never get one, because that’s called fate. MVS has one touchdown. Ouch.

Yup, exactly right. No question. Then don’t get on your insufferable high horse talking about how your organization has such high standards that apply to everyone when they obviously don’t. That little speech had enough sanctimonious drivel in it to make me retch.

  29. You would think Hill would have been a movable piece at the deadline.

Even if it was for a bottom of the roster guy they were kicking the tires on..

What? Packers cut you because you have discipline problems. You’ve been a non contributor and had an injury… come to the Bears. Yeah right.

Why can’t a defense they invested so heavily in rise to the occasion? They’ve been average or worse since 2011.

How does LaFleur go from looking like a coach of the year, with an unstoppable offense, to THIS?

I’m surprised Rodgers back could carry all this weight. A lesser man would have collapsed.

  32. Disgruntled? Let’s see, Adams, MVS,Smith have all said they were dam glad to not be a packer anymore and they were playing on a winning team. That is saying something about the culture.

    MVS? Average. No one cares.

Za Smith? Obvious axe to grind.

Adams has said no such thing.

Oh yes, Adams, he sure is playing for a winning team. Smith plays for a team that has zero trophies and will never get one, because that’s called fate. MVS has one touchdown. Ouch.

Let’s clear the bs here. It looked like Adams was happy with Rodgers, but apparently Rodger’s recent antics soured Adams because he was very happy to go to LV to hook up with his old college buddy Carr.
Smith was obviously pissed with the Packers over his treatment when he was injured, just going to the Vikes says it all. Vikes have been snakebit but sooner or later it turns around for everyone. Curse of the Bambino – gone. Chicago Cubs – 2016 World Series winner. BTW, fate has nothing to do with the NFL, read Revelations if you want to learn about fate.
Regarding MVS, he’s already pretty much exactly where he was with Green Bay last year. 2021 = 26 receptions for 430 yards. 2022 YTD = 26 receptions for 441 yards. Looks like KC got exactly what they expected and there’s still 8 games to go.

  34. Standards???? So it’s okay to lie about being vaccinated?? Seriously, absolutely ridiculous.

Agreed and accepted, but when is the media going to start referring to QBs as “divas” and “a cancer on the team” when they publicly act out, the way they do when referring to RBs and WRs?

    ___________

C’mon Man, the Bears certainly thought EQ was worth a flyer as a free agent. 🤣

  37. LMAO Standards? If that was the case, DB Rodgers would be gone by now. 3 redzone picks vs Detroit? Time to hang em up Karen!

  38. He really didn’t have to say that. Neither Holmgren nor MM would have trashed a player on the way out.

  39. Meek Lafleur was pantsed on national TV. He needed to cut a young kid and talk big about it to try to show everyone he is not a push over. Problem is the players can see though it. Lafleur will never have the respect of an NFL locker room again.
