Mike Vrabel addresses Todd Downing DUI arrest, declines comment on whether alcohol was on plane

USA TODAY Sports

An impressive win over the Packers has been tempered by the DUI arrest of Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing. While DUI incidents aren’t exactly unprecedented, this one raises the obvious question of whether Downing had alcohol on the team plane or bus, in violation of league rules.

Via Jim Wyatt of the team’s official website, coach Mike Vrabel told reporters on Friday that he has been in touch with Downing, owner Amy Adams Strunk, G.M. Jon Robinson, and the NFL. Vrabel said that an internal investigation is ongoing.

“We all have a great responsibility as members of this community,” Vrabel said.

Vrabel also said he won’t be able to comment on whether alcohol was present on the plane, given the pending investigation.

The NFL has separately said it is investigation the situation. The league prohibits alcohol on team planes or buses.

  1. You can be past the legal limit after 2 shots which takes no time. Not standing up for him but even Taylor Heinecke was seen on their plane drinking Busch Light.

  2. If the plane didn’t have alcohol, it would be the only plain not to have alcohol in the history of the NFL

  3. Oops. Premature celebration. Arrest the flight attendants who served him the alcohol.

  4. So he either drank on the plane or partied hard right after getting off it. Is Tennessee still a lively place at 3am in late November?

  5. Are players really not allowed to drink on the plane? I had no idea. It sounds ridiculous to me if that’s the case.

  6. I think him declining comment is proof enough of serious violations committed. There is no more to know here. Vrabel and Downing should both be suspended for the rest of the season. I’m starting to think Vrabel was drinking too. Something needs to be done and if nothing is done then the entire organization is complicit in promoting behaviors that could lead to serious outcomes. Take action now and suspend both coaches.

  7. Why can’t he comment? He wasn’t on the plane? He either saw it or he didn’t. Some of these teams are just too big for their britches.

  8. “The NFL has separately said it is investigation the situation.”

Must be nice to get paid to be this dumb. 🤤🤦

    ____________

Does not matter. The rule is the rule, for very good reasons. Players, coaches, and other personnel have to get home upon leaving the airport. Drinking on the airplane causes obvious problems. Whataboutism regarding other situations means nothing when it comes to intoxicated driving.

    ____________

Nashville? Yes. On the other hand, rural Tennessee closes down at nightfall.

  11. Having a beer on the team plane got Josh Allen re-suspended while he was on probation for weed.

If it’s not a violation to have alcohol on the team plane, then he did nothing wrong by having one. He couldn’t possibly have been the only one.
But Downing should know not to get wasted and get right into his car.
Watch the NFL react by banning beer on team flights. Too bad adults can’t police themselves on how much they drink.

  12. Everyone seems to be forgetting that one can get arrested for DUI in TN without having consumed any alcohol at all. “Impaired” driving can mean alcohol OR any other intoxicant. Could be beer, or it could be hydrocodone, or any number of substances. Maybe THAT’S why Vrabel won’t comment….Downing may have been doing something that no one in the organization was aware of. Not saying that’s the case at all, but everyone seems to be jumping to the conclusion that the Titans provided him alcohol when we don’t yet even know that alcohol was involved….it probably was, but we don’t know that YET.

  13. If that’s the rule, then why did the video of Taylor Heinecke drinking beer on their team plane not raise any eyebrows?

  14. If they chartered a Delta plane, is there a rule against the plane offering what it would normally offer to passengers?

Not excusing actually driving drunk, but wondering what we really know about this supposed “rule” and how it applies to a plane.

  15. Shocking to me that grown men on a plane home from a road game can’t have a beer. If that is indeed a rule it’s bizarrely antiquated and impossible to enforce.

They dont call Nashville, NashVegas for nothing … It gets crazy here.

    —————-

    Umm, no it’s not.

  17. Pretty sure there is also beer available at the stadiums for players and coaches after the game. Maybe he had some at Lambeau and then on plane and he may have gone out too when they got back.

  18. Whatever Todd Downings punishment is, it should include a mandatory visit to Ariel Young and the family of Tina Tintor! There is zero excuse for DUI when a safe ride is on your fn phone!

  19. If this was a player they would have released him after supplying alcoholic beverages on the flight.

  20. Obviously the team’s legal staff told Vrabel to not comment further. After the Britt Reid tragedy you’d think they NFL would be trying to monitor alcohol use as closely as possible.
