Relocation of Browns-Bills brings out the nutty conspiracy theories

The NFL moved Sunday’s game between the Browns and Bills from Buffalo to Detroit, due to a snowstorm resulting in amounts measured in feet, not inches.

Some Browns fans are crying foul. As the argument goes, playing in the snow benefits the Browns and their run-heavy offense. Thus, the NFL decided to “help” Buffalo end a two-game losing streak by moving the game to a dome, where Bills quarterback Josh Allen will operate the offense far more effectively.

That argument has so many flaws, we need to number them.

One. There likely wouldn’t have been snow on the field during the game. A cover would have remained in place until Sunday morning. By then, there’s a very good chance the snow will be over by then.

Two. Josh Allen knows a thing or two about playing in wintry elements. He played college football at Wyoming. He has the arm to throw through whatever Mother Nature throws at him.

Three. Snow doesn’t hurt the other part of the passing game. The receiver knows where he’s going. The defensive back doesn’t. It’s harder to react and keep up with a receiver in the snow.

Four. Does anyone really think the Bills want to issue refunds for all tickets to the game, swapping out the revenue for whatever they manage to get in Detroit?

Five. This isn’t a football decision. It’s a public-safety issue. Chief NFL Spokesman Brian McCarthy, reacting to a Twitter remark that this situation proves every team should play in a dome, made this point: “This has nothing to do [with] the stadium, but ensuring we’re not diverting resources from the community. Also concerned for safety of fans, players & personnel traveling to/from game the next few days. Sports [with] indoor arenas sometimes postpone games due to weather concerns in town.”

Related to that point, some are connecting the team’s inability to practice on Friday to the absence of a domed stadium. That. Is. Stupid.

It’s not about snow in the stadium during the game. It’s about snow keeping people from getting from Point A to Point B.

The Bills have an indoor practice facility. They can practice today. But they can’t get to practice. That’s how bad the snow is.

Anyone arguing the Bills should have a dome is basically arguing Buffalo shouldn’t have the Bills. It snows there. Sometimes, it snows a lot. That’s how it goes. Sometimes, it will be a problem. This weekend, it required an extreme measure.

But it’s not about helping the Bills or hurting the Browns. And it’s not about whether the Buffalo stadium does or doesn’t have a roof. It’s about the safety of everyone in the region affected by the storm. Wisely, the NFL decided to resist the temptation to project memorable images via CBS cameras to the football-watching world and did the right thing.

  1. Some people are gullible enough to believe anything. That is why frauds like Alex Jones continue to make money.

  2. This is outright garbage. It’s a fact this game is being moved. This is reality, it’s not an alternate reality the game is being moved, Mike. This is happening. This doesn’t even count people who are traveling to the game in Buffalo and have commitments.

We’ve had season tickets in my family since 1978, and I’ve been to numerous games in Foxborough with multiple feet of snow on the ground and still falling during games. Even games that no one will remember like December 1996 vs the Jets. We got home, the power was out. 2-3 feet of snow on the ground, with horrible visibility. Game was not moved, not even nary a thought it being moved.

And, it just so happens Buffalo has no run game and Joshy Allen has a sore arm. Whoops!

I could name a dozen games like this. The point is, these parts of the country know how to handle the roads and infrastructure to make sure people can get in and out. No sale here. It also sends an awful precedent for teams to negotiate a move of venue for any reason they can argue for with weather issues, for reasons they want.

The Northeast has been handling storms like this for a long, long time. This isn’t some surprise storm in Atlanta, Dallas, or Nashville, where they’re not equipped to handle it. Embarrassing to be defending Goodell as he tries to help yet another team win and get their new stadiumd pushed through with extra economic backing.

Of course this helps Buffalo, Mike, and on the heels of last week’s unacceptable officiating where 6+ figure refs seemingly don’t know rules again or in the bathroom during an important review, these “coincidence$” don’t feel like such, especially at the rate they occur.

Name a sport that behaves in such creepy fashion. You can’t. Anyone who watches other sports leagues is nodding their head in agreement. Even notoriously bad baseball umps don’t have this many accidental blunders. NBA? Nope. NHL? Nope.

And now Goodell is absolved? Laughable. The guy has been caught six ways from Sunday in lies, framejobs, cover ups and financial decisions that take precedent over integrity of the game.

Lots of “coincidences” in the NFL. I am not a fan of “conincidence$”, especially under the Goodell Regime the last 15 years.

Been watching the NFL for 40 years and only under Goodell’s watch do the strangest of things happen unlike any other sport in the world.

    Period.

  3. They should just play the game in Buffalo as planned. Make it happen. No excuses. Its just snow. Get over it. Toughen up NFLPA.

  4. I live in Cleveland, first thing I wondered is why the Bills would essentially turn a home game into a for sure road game. Detroit is a 4 hour drive from Cleveland. There will be A LOT of Browns fans in attendance… Seems to me that Cleveland stands to benefit quite a bit from that decision too.

  5. The nuttiest idea was people wanting to relocate the game to Toronto who is also on their way to getting something like 20 inches of snow from this same storm. “Let’s make the fans drive 90 minutes in the same blizzard keeping us from having the game in Buffalo.” Like that was a well thought out plan.

  6. I guess we cancel schools because the kids can’t learn when the snow hits their books or classrooms? Dome the schools! Unreal. I weep for the human race.

  7. Bunch of princess too hot in miami too snowy in buffallo, I am hurt when I lose… typical bills inferiority complex at play

  8. There goes so called homefield advantage. There go the fans of Buffalo to be at the game they love in bad weather. This is the NFL today

  9. If the NFL had control over what happens.. Dallas & Jets would be in Super Bowl. Nobody controls Mother Nature people don’t understand the issues with 4 to 6 feet of snow..

  10. Okay, I’ll concede that getting to the stadium would be a logistical nightmare because of the weather…however, the Bills are still in Buffalo and face the same logistics in order to get out, and waiting around isn’t going to make it any easier

Why didn’t they leave yesterday ?

    That’s really poor planning

  11. Another reason to relocate the Bills. If they can’t play in the snow, what are they doing up there?

    Weathers nice in San Antonio!

  12. Where were these moving a game “precautions” around the ICE Bowl. And I recall a game in Cinci where the weather was far worse than Sunday’s expected Buffalo storm. And hows about the fog game between the Iggles and Bears.

  13. With so many things that were once “conspiracy theories” now coming true, only a fool would discount anything right away.

  14. 1. Catching is effected in the cold, so it does help a run heavy team.
    2. It’s not going to be snowing Siri g the game? Then play the game in Buffalo.
    3. We’re 2 years from not having fans at games, truly life saving, so the game could be played without fans.
    4. Commenting on conspiracy theories would be endless, do you really think you’ve somehow upended people’s thoughts on why the game has been moved.

  15. in the end all this fuss will the benefit the owners of the bills for a new stadium, sure what about the other many other snowstorms thru out the years since buffalo has been in the nfl. did that ever stop them? and point number one “if there likely be no snow on the field why bother moving the game? i get safety reasons plow snow on the streets and stuff like that whatever lol lost my very humble logic.

  16. Also – snow and cold doesn’t hurt offense and passing game, and doesn’t even impact the quality of play. Rain and wind however does, and makes for some awful football.

  17. Having lived thru upstate NY winters (and not even in the “Lake Effect” zone) for almost 30 years I completely understand the public safety issue. Which obviously a lot of uniformed people do not.

The effort to clear away that amount of snow, to make the roads safe for travel, is enormous. And it is exacerbated by idiots who THINK they know how to drive in the snow going out and getting into accidents which means not only do they have to be rescued (and cleaned up after) but you now can’t clear that portion of the road for several hours.

And a lot of local businesses will be closed to, so once the snow is out of the way it takes the local economy a couple of days to get back to normal.

And snow like this doesn’t fall in 10 minutes and then the sun comes out. It falls for hours on end and you can’t even start to get it really cleaned up until it is over.

Finally you have to pick a stadium that is available and close (like Detroit) which DOESN’T confer home field advantage to the visitors.

I guess they are called conspiracy nuts for a reason.

    “same blizzard”
    ————-
Toronto isn’t getting a blizzard. Neither is the road to Toronto. Its only on the windward side of Lake Erie.

Either way, moving the game anywhere is a dumb idea. Sunday will be fine. Its just snow in a city used to snow. I live in snow. Its a part of life.

  19. Been watching the NFL for 40 years and only under Goodell’s watch do the strangest of things happen unlike any other sport in the world.

    Period

Been watching the NFL for 64 years and find this comment a typical NE Pats fans response. A couple of things NE rarely if ever gets 4-5 feet of snow ….at once regardless of what is being claimed in this comment. NE stadium is closer to population center of the fan base hence less difficulty getting to the game and less plowing needed. Finally the argument is based on woefully low cognitive sophistication….it’s dumb and troll based. There is no conspiracy….this is not politics.

  20. It is very clear from the comments here that people really have no idea what 3 feet of snow is like. The field will be fine, but the infrastructure to support the game will not. Police, plows, ambulance, fire trucks, etc definitely don’t need the strain of a football game to endanger others that need them. Buffalo’s people are tough as nails. The team would much rather be in their own stadium and locker room, but snow falling at a rate of two inches per hour makes that dangerous. Only buffoons and trolls can’t see that.

  21. They should have left it in Buffalo. But since it is moved, they should have moved game to Green Bay. Packers are on the road Sunday. Lambeau is an open stadium in a similar climate to Buffalo. Even Soldier field would have been a better alternate, I believe the Bears are on the road this week also.

  22. The REAL conspiracy is that someone is running around putting something in the water turning people into conspiracy nuts… SMH

  23. where was the NFL and their public safety concerns with a Tropical storm of week 1 in Chicago. The game should not have been relocated.

  24. They have a point. The NFL (refs) did all they could to help the Bills to a win against the Vikings last week. They failed in that endeavor so perhaps they’re going to be sure they don’t fail again.

  25. I’m actually a bit embarrassed for fans who think there is some unspoken motive here, or who continue to say the Bills are “soft” because of this.

This isn’t the Bills’ decision. And it’s not about “playing in tough football weather.” It’s about player and fan safety w/ the logistics of getting to a stadium in so much snow.

The reaction has really been pathetic.

Because the storm won’t be as bad as they are proclaiming. The main problems would be an ice storm or a storm that would ocurr in a part of the country that isn’t used to a blizzard style accumulation.

The Bills cheated. Period. They knew their feeble Run D was going to get run over. If the Jets run amuck on them, what do you think what would happen in the snow when you can’t get good traction?

They’ve lose 2 in a row and it likely would have been 3 here with Chubb and Hunt going off.

  27. ….and we have folks with this same kind of thinking running things Legislative Branch of our government………

  28. People still don’t get it. The Bills don’t have snow removal equipment, the city does. The city should not prioritize the stadium parking lot and ingress and egress routes to the stadium. They should prioritize snow emergency routes across the entire city as any city normally does in a bad storm. That’s what this is all about.

Why has this never happened in the history of the NFL before then? Hmm? The snow will be stopping Saturday night. There is plenty of time to prep for managing it and then doing a final clear out for Sunday to manage it like every other franchise has done that has the capacity to handle such amounts of snow. NE, the NY teams, Philly, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, Green Bay, etc, etc, all have handled these for decades, inlcuding Buffalo.

This is no different than any other franchise that has to deal with large snowstorms whether it be in November, December or January.

If it’s a team in the South that isn’t used to this or doesn’t have the infrastruture to handle it, sure, games have been moved before.

Buffalo is not in the South.

We get it just fine. This is the first time this has ever happened and we’ve given numerous examples of very large storms in the past where it was handled just fine.

Intelligent people know why this was moved and done so swiftly. BUffalo has lost 2 in a row giving up large quantities of yards on the ground, keeping Joshy Allen and the Buffalo offense off the field, and Cleveland has the best rushing offense in football.

Some of us don’t like being treated like idiots and we also don’t like these cute coincidences either.

  30. Didn’t the Patriots beat the bills in Mac’s first year in a heavy snow storm? Allen’s offense was definitely effected by the snowy cold conditions. He threw for 14/30 145 yards and they only scored 10 points. Plus football is awesome in the snow.

It wasn’t snow. It was hurricane-force wind. Allen’s #’s were remarkable considering those conditions.

The Pats got lucky w/ that. Generally, severe weather plays to the underdog’s advantage. I know this from the 20-year drought the Bills had. I was always hoping for bad weather against better teams.

  32. The Bills game was just moved in 2014, to Detroit and get this it was due to a bad snowstorm. So it’s just idiotic to say this has never happened. Was the nfl helping buffalo in 2014 as well?

  33. STOP THE STEAL!!

lol people will believe anything to escape truth and accountability for a loss.

  34. Fair point. Not about the game. Fans, players, officials have to travel to the game, through feet of snow. City has to clear the streets, field, and lot(s) for all that. After the get out themselves.

  35. Should be played in Buffalo. BTW, NHL Buffalo Sabres playing Leafs in Toronto on Saturday night – no issues.

  36. The voices of all the “Conspiracy Theorists”, fueled by the prominence of the internet, only tells me one thing: the [American] people are incredibly stupid. Politics, sports, whatever. What in the world? Every team in the North leases their own snow removal equipment from an equipment lease contractor. The city doesn’t plow NFL parking lots or their teams infrastructure.

  38. Ok. Since the NFL was so dead set on moving the game, go half the distance between buffalo and Detroit and move it to Cleveland. In all liklihood by moving it to Detroit your going to have more Cleveland fans than Buffalo fans anyway. Though us midwest football fans will move heaven and earth to watch our teams play, so Bills fans may surprise us and show up in droves. Also Cleveland is expecting a snow storm Saturday night through Sunday, though not nearly what Buffalo is expecting so fans could still get their “Snow Game”. If Florio is right and it doesn’t matter then who cares? Play the snow game in Cleveland. Less distance for the Bills fans who can get out of Buffalo anyways.

  39. Moving the game to Detroit or any domed stadium was wrong. They’re both outdoor teams.

Combine that with Buffalo playing the Lions in Detroit 4 days later, well it’s not a conspiracy, it’s a serious favor to the Bills.

  40. 1 – it doesn’t take 4 hours to get to detroit from cleveland unless you are driving 50 mph and stop at every service center on the turnpike…or unless you live far east of cleveland near the ohio/pa border…so i question the comment earlier.

2 – my opinion: they should have kept the game in buffalo and the nfl could have worked with the cities (buffalo, orchard park) to help with snow removal and fan experience. the tb/kc game wasn’t moved because of the hurricane…i don’t remember any other snow games in recent history moved either.

3 – is it not a competitive advantage to have the bills play in the same place for the next 2 weeks?

  41. “is it not a competitive advantage to have the bills play in the same place for the next 2 weeks?”

True but I should have been more clear. Private contractors will either be under contract with the city under that kind of an emergency or they are busy prioritizing critical infrastructure contracts. It would be a shame if a private contractor was forced to prioritize the stadium over a hospital. The city would have been forced to prioritize the roads in and around the stadium. It just baffles me that people think this is about anything but public safety.

There’s the stadium and the parking lots and then there’s the entire city. People still have to get to the stadium and back. The streets have to be cleared out too, in time for the game.

Me thinks people here have never had to shovel estimated 5 feet of show (not inches). Much less snow plow entire streets.

  44. You people are ridiculous. This has nothing whatsoever to do with football. The people of Buffalo are experiencing a weather calamity as dangerous as any hurricane or wildfire, and deserve first responders who aren’t distracted by drunken idiots at a football game.
    Grow up, for heaven’s sake.

  45. They did the exact same thing in November 2014. The game in Buffalo was moved to Detroit because of a snowstorm. Why is this such a big deal? The EXACT same thing happened 8 years ago. Bunch of Tin foil hats around here

  46. We’d happily play the game at home. Plenty of shovels here, feel free to come to Buffalo & help dig out. We’ll supply the beer & wings.

  47. OK so people can’t make it 1mi to say 15mi in a snowstorm to get to the game in Buffalo BUT they can drive 300mi at 4 1/2 to 5hr to get to the game in Detroit?

YEA that makes sense = NOT!

Are the season ticket holders going to get a refund?

  48. Or 370mi and 6 1/2hr if they don’t have a Passport, the numbers I gave above were for cutting through Canada!

  49. Reason five, public safety, is why the game was moved. I’m no lawyer, but I’m guessing that choosing to keep the game in Buffalo when a weather disaster is predicted could result in lawsuits.

Cleveland is closer to Detroit. It’s a rust belt city (like Detroit). On any given day most Detroit fans would favor Cleveland in this matchup. Factor in that the Lions play the Bills on Thursday – there’s no way Detroit fans will cheer for Buffalo.

This also gives the Lions a wide-open opportunity to do a lot of (legal?) surveillance of the Bills the weekend before they play them on Thanksgiving. I’m surprised the Bills were ok with this.

  50. Just wow. Reading these comments reminds me of one of my favorite George Carlin quotes “Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.”
I spent nearly 28 years of my life in Buffalo and over 20 in Colorado Ski Country…so I’d like to think I know about snow.
Moving the game was the right decision.

  51. The people of Buffalo are experiencing a weather calamity as dangerous as any hurricane or wildfire

    ——-

I’ve lived all over upstate NY, including Buffalo for 15 years. I’ve been living in the southeast for 15 years. I’d take a blizzard 10 out of 10 times over a hurricane n terms of being safe. There s really no comparison.

Houses get completely destroyed in hurricanes, cars get blown away, roads get washed away …. That kind of destruction does not happen in a blizzard

I’ve never experienced a wildfire thank god, but no way a blizzard matches that… people will be able to get back their normal lives in Buffalo early next week. Not even close to what happens in those fires

  52. This is a reflection of where we are in society. Soft for feelings being hurt and equity of course.

  53. Why not Why not Nashville since the Titans were in GB last night, seems Detroit gives the Lions a free scouting opportunity right in their own backyard that they shouldn’t get and just 4 days before their Thanksgiving day match up against the Bills!

Not an ounce of thought went into this but I’d expect no less from the NFL brass!

  54. “Houses get completely destroyed in hurricanes, cars get blown away, roads get washed away …. That kind of destruction does not happen in a blizzard”

True, but I said “dangerous”, which means to human lives, not property.
Let’s see, roof collapsing on you? That’s worse than a hurricane. Freeze to death alone because you slammed your car into a snowbank and no one can get to you? That’s worse than a wildfire.
I personally worked as a plow driver on the Groundhog Day 2011 blizzard in Chicago. We got only 20″, but people were dying all over the place and the first responders couldn’t get to them.
You say “people will get back to normal next week”, but you’re wrong. The people who lost loved ones in this event will not be “normal”.

  55. Just to update people who think this is no big deal, Orchard Park has gotten 54 inches of snow since Thursday afternoon and it is still coming down. It was the right decision to move the game, no matter what the dolts say.

  56. I love some of the comments on here. “other teams may not be used to this weather but Buffalo is”.There is nowhere in the world that is used to weather like this. Nobody repeatedly gets 5 or more foot snowstorms. It’s completely unsafe to be driving to that game. That’s why it was moved, not because it would be more fair to one team. Like people, before you hit post comment, look over it and see if it sounds completely idiotic. Nobody is weak for not wanting this game to be in Buffalo. 100% of the people saying that wouldn’t even think about trying to drive to a football game in 5 feet of snow. It’s nowhere near important enough to warrant keeping it there. And to anybody foolish enough to think this gives us an advantage over Buffalo, just wow. We were never going to win that game, our defense is going to be blown apart by the Bills. You can put this game anywhere in the world and it’s not gonna change the fact that unless Buffalo forfeits, we’re losing.

  57. I think its really ironic that the bills cried about the heat in Miami and that they are getting a big break to not have to play in their own weather!LOL!

  58. I do not LIKE that fact that it was moved, but I certainly agree with the decision. This is not just another blizzard…this is a monstrously dangerous, once-a-decade event.
Sure, Buffalo (and Cleveland and Minneapolis) knows how to deal with snow, but they don’t often get 5′ in 2 days.

  59. The Browns should be happy. If Josh Allen plays well the the Bills Should win, and another loss helps Cleveland’s draft position…oh wait, it’s the Texans that should be happy.
