Will Tom Brady return for 2023 with the Buccaneers?

USA TODAY Sports

Not long ago, the idea of Tom Brady playing football in 2023 — and playing specifically for the Buccaneers — seemed inconceivable. Now, it’s feeling a little more conceivable.

“Everybody here knows Brady is one year at a time, but what you see every day is a guy who acts like he wants to keep playing,” an unnamed team source recently told JoeBucsFan.com. “This is his team, and the team loves him. He’s heavily invested in many ways. It’s hard to imagine he’d find a better situation with another franchise. And he’s been playing great for three years.”

Another team would surely want him. Football is business. Someone will want a player who would sell every single ticket to every single game, and who would deliver multiple prime-time games. The question is whether there’s a team he’ll want.

But will there be a team that gives him a better chance to win than Tampa does? Former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels may want him in Las Vegas (owner Mark Davis once did), but can they win there? The Miami ship likely has sailed for good, especially with Tua turning things around. The Colts could want him, and maybe they’d have enough to contend, if he were on the team. (The identity of the next coach would be a major factor.) The Giants could be intriguing, if Daniel Jones isn’t back. The 49ers could make sense, if they prefer to give Trey Lance another year to sit and learn.

Still, even when everyone else lines up for Brady, he may decide to stay where he is.

“He loves it here,” former Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians told Ira Kaufman of JoeBucsFan.com. “He loves his teammates, his coaches and the organization. If he decides to play next season, I think it will be with the Buccaneers.”

At one point, it appeared that Brady wouldn’t be back. Frankly, however, if his ex-wife was the main thing pulling him to retire and with that relationship over, what’s to keep him from continuing to keep playing?

He has said he wants to avoid watching football after retiring and concluding, “‘These guys suck. I could do way better than that.’”

Given his post-retirement arrangement with Fox, Brady won’t be able to avoid it. He’ll be watching football every week. If he thinks he can play better than the quarterback who’ll be playing in the games he handles for Fox, he’ll be tormented.

Can he keep playing, if he wants to?  Quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen recently said that, yes, Brady can.

He’s playing as good as he ever has,” Christensen said Tuesday on the Buccaneers Radio Network, via JoeBucsFan.com. “I think he’s improving. I think he’s improving. Not to sound like a coaching cliché here again, but you practice, you work hard at what you do, you tend to improve. I think that goes for 45-year-olds, as well. . . . He’s throwing the ball at a high, high level.”

The arm isn’t the issue. The issue will be the legs. Can he move well enough to avoid taking hits? If not, he’ll eventually get hit enough that he’ll be injured.

It seemed to be moving in that direction earlier this year. Recently, it has changed. And it’s changing enough to raise the question of whether he’ll decide play not as a 45-year-old man but to play as a 46-year-old.

  1. Come play for the Packers, Tom.

We’ll keep your golfing buddy around as your QB coach.

  2. Well, now he doesn’t have a wife and family at home to support and be there for, so he can do whatever he wants I guess. Hope he thinks the tradeoff was worth it. (I’m sure he does… football is apparently the true love of his life.)

  3. Brady’s stats don’t look quite as good this year but his play has still been very good. It’s because of how anemic the Bucs offense as a whole has been at not scoring TDs, but Brady is still 5th in YPG and the lowest INT rate in the NFL. And even with Brady having an uncharacteristically poor passer rating of 92, it’s only because of the lack of TDs and is still 13th in the NFL. Brady is still a good QB and a top QB if the team around him supports him. This is more similar to his last year in NE than it is to dropping off a cliff or anything. He could totally go again next year and now there’s no reason for him not to.

  4. He’s going to attempt to get to another contender, because he wants to be the only quarterback to go to three Superbowls with three different teams

  5. Tom will not return to Tampa. Miami is off the table, seeing how well Tua is playing. I do feel the Giants, 49ers or Dallas could be landing spots for Tom. I think a return to the Patriots will be in the conversation but I do not see that happening. Most likely I think he will be a Giant next year.

  6. He wants to stay near is kids. He’s staying in Florida unless the 49ers call. Although, it is funny that TB and Jimmy G are both free agents. Alabama fans are ready to run Bill O Brien out of town. You know who loves reunions, ole six rings himself. And he has a boatload of money to spend this off-season. It’s time to come home Tom.

  7. If the Bucs go deep into the playoffs this year, then maybe.

IF the Bucs fail to get to the playoffs, then Brady will retire, which willbe ironic given what transpired with him and Gisele.

  8. “He loves it here,” former Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians told Ira Kaufman of JoeBucsFan.com. “He loves his teammates, his coaches and the organization. If he decides to play next season, I think it will be with the Buccaneers.”

Not believing anything Bruce Arians says about Tom Brady……

  9. The Steelers already have ROTY (Rookie Of The Year) frontrunner Kenny “Wicked” Pickett who leads all NFL rookie quarterbacks in passing AND rushing so HARD PASS! We are set for years to come.

  10. While every Bucs coach, media outlet and player claims Tom loves it in Tampa and wouldn’t want to play anywhere else, they are conveniently ignoring the fact that the Bucs are nearly $43 million over the cap next season — the second worst in the league, according to over the cap. Explain this inconvenient truth to Tommy and then ask him if he’s coming back.

  11. Tom Brady will go back to the University of Michigan and win a national championship. It’s an obvious move.

  12. San Francisco seems to make a lot of sense. This time around I think John Lynch and Kyle (boy-genius in his own mind) will make the proper bold move and get him.

  13. “He loves it here,” former Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians told Ira Kaufman of JoeBucsFan.com. “He loves his teammates, his coaches and the organization.” Bruce then added “Tom loves it when I criticize him and blame him for everything that’s wrong with the team. Who wouldn’t, I’m such a lovable guy!”
I think it’s clear that Brady has the desire and the talent to keep playing. Of course he’ll want a strong O-line, 46 year old guys aren’t overly mobile. I’m not concerned about the drama, that’s mostly media driven. Having said that, I wasn’t impressed with the apparent scheming/tampering going on with Miami. As the GOAT Brady should hold himself to a higher standard.

  14. The only thing worse than a narcissist are the people who enable them! Stop asking if a narcissist wants to remain in the limelight! The answer will always be YES because they crave the attention! Maybe if MSM ignored him, he’d go away!

  15. Tom’s piggy bank is well set so stop the nonsense and he still is a top 5 quarterback. We’ve never seen excellence for so long in any sport so all you haters can suck eggs.

  16. zonedout100 says: “Not believing anything Bruce Arians says about Tom Brady……”

You had me at “Not believing anything Bruce Arians says”

  17. I hope people commenting about it don’t really think Brady is dumb enough to lose much money with the FTX disaster. His family and his family’s families will never be in need. He is purely doing it for the love of the game.

  18. Florio hit on the key point: The divorce is final, so why not play. My (maybe wild) guess is that Gisele asked him if this was going to be his last year. When he could not assure her that it was, she filed, thus ending the marital turmoil. Now Brady is essentially free to play as long as he wishes. He’s still, quite amazingly, playing at a high level, so …

  19. So wait then, your whole narrative and all your air time about Brady going to Miami was wrong then, somehow I feel like you wasted my time then, what else are you wrong about than….

  20. If Tom wants to continue playing after this season I feel his best opportunity is right here. He wants to stay in the warm weather and he’s building a home in Miami. Miam is set with Tua. The only other possible option I feel would be San Fran but he’s not going there as a 1 year option. He wants it open ended in case he wants to continue playing and I can’t see him leaving a team he is happy with, knows the play book, the players and coaches to start over again. Plus he’s in the NFC South which means he can win the division every year and get a home playoff game easy. This is really a no brainer.

5th in yards per game, but has the most passing attempts. Of course he has the fewest interceptions. His yards per attempt are the lowest are horrible. His YPA is amongst the lowest tier of NFL QBs. IOWs, a lot of dump offs/short passes.

  22. Dude didn’t even want to come back to them this year. He isn’t going back next year. He’s going to San Fran. It’s probably already a done deal. San Fran will just keep the kid on the bench and let him heal up.

  23. In a way, he’s a Buc no matter what.

He counts $35mil against the Bucs cap next year.

  24. Sounds like Arians and the others on the Bucs are saying these things in hopes to get him to come back. And anyone who thinks income tax would keep him in FL hasn’t been paying attention. It’s no longer about the money. Now it’s about his legacy and desires.

  25. I think a return to the Patriots will be in the conversation
    —-
And that’s when I start cheering for them to lose every game until he’s gone. And Belichick too for bringing the cheater back. Would hate to do that but enough is enough.

  26. I have 2 possibilities. 49ers for a year. Trey Lance sits behind Brady for a year. No way the 49ers will give up on Lance with all the draft picks they gave up to move up. But why not have him sit one more year, and learn from the Brady.
The second option is the Raiders. The Raiders can cut Carr, draft a QB and sit behind Brady for 2 years. Plus he can play for Josh again.
I would not expect the Dolphins to be an option now, especially the way Tua has looked this season.
As for the Patriots, no way he goes back there to play. The only way he returns back to New England is if him, Kraft and Belichick decide to sign on him to a a one day contract for him to retire as a Patriot. And I doubt that would happen.

  27. He will most likely be back. Where else is he going to recover some of the millions he lost in the crypto collapse.

  28. Please, please for the love of God just go away already. Everyone is sick and tired of your constant desire to crave attention. You ruined your marriage and now your legacy is next.

  29. I am so happy that the Dolphins turned it around with Tua at the helm. I believe Tom wanted to be in Miami THIS season, but the Glazers were unwilling to release him from the contract he extended to help them bring back the gang for the repeat attempt. Note to players: Do NOT do the team a solid. They will NOT reciprocate.

    Niners Tom.

  30. Brady is not having a good season. He’s ranked 14th in the league in touchdowns with Marcus Mariota and Justin Fields. And most of his yards are YAC (nearly 50%).

  31. There’s a decent chance that either he or Rodgers (if he’s released) end up in SF. They’ll let Lance sit while they try to win one with the window open.

  32. Remember that GQ interview Tommy did years ago near the beginning of his career when he wanted to prove to everyone that he really was a manly man who liked beer and watched orn? 😂

    That’s the Tommy fan club’s hero. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

  33. Either Brady or Rodgers will be the starting QB in San Francisco next year as they let Trey sit and learn for one more year.

  34. Football needs its greatest player of all time.. play til the wheels come off. Still better than any of the others

  35. Tom Brady at the moment may feel the need to continue into 2023 due to having won his most recent 2 games. However, this season has been a week-to-week decision on how Brady thinks about his NFL future. Now, the Buccaneers have a bye week and thus the need to go forward with playing is fresh on Brady’s mind. Is it however the right decision? I think not.

I do need to extend my admiration for a man in crisis who is still trying to defy time and age. It is pleasing and even fascinating. Yet, it is still temporary. All sports careers, outside of golf, must come to an end. In the hockey world this year, for example, Jaromir Jagr is possibly finished playing pro hockey after 34 (!) seasons. I was five when Jagr got his first games with Kladno, a team he now practically owns. And if owning a team is what eventually gets maybe the other Great One to hang up his skates, then so be it. By contrast, Tom Brady would have to reach the age of 56 to complete a 34th season. Jaromir Jagr is 50. So, I just do not see Tom Brady going on past 2022 and finishing the season if Tampa Bay doesn’t continue their winning streak. The way I see it, Brady has 4 options: and being a quarterback and/or living in Florida is not among them. The 4 are: the San Francisco 49ers if John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan feel the desire to go all in a win now approach, the Las Vegas Raiders provided Josh Mcdaniels stays as the head coach, the New England Patriots as a way of patching things up and at the least pulling a Phil Niekro (who upon leaving baseball in 1987 played one final game with the Atlanta Braves as a bookend coda), or taking the Fox Sports money and having his Sundays reunite with Rob Gronkowski as a TV personality, combined with a Patriots one day contract and in 5 years going in the Hall of Fame as a Patriot and maybe even a Buccaneer should he choose to.

Of those options, it is the football analyst option which will likely be occurring. Particularly if Fox Sports asks for Tom Brady to be with them for the Super Bowl, since Tampa Bay is doubtfully going all the way to the Big Game. Once you have a taste of, to paraphrase the show Chess, only watching the game, controlling the game: being a player in the arena loses its charm. We will know more next week after the game against the Cleveland Browns. For now, I hope Tom Brady has a Happy Thanksgiving; and the same goes for us all here.

Brady has thrown for 2,805 yards with 1,340 YAC which is 47%. Rodgers has 2,542 with 1,351 YAC for 53%. Mahomes has the most TDs in the league with 25 and most passing yards with 2,805. His YAC is 1,340 for 49%. YAC is a part of every QBs stats.

Not shocked one bit you read a GQ article about Brady. I am sure you treat it like a Spider-Man comic snd sent it to PSA for grading.

No but if Tommy ever explains why he smashed his cell phone maybe I’ll see what they think 🙂

The irony considering BB has been busted for cheating. Quit trying to act like you are a Pats fan.

As I’ve explained before Belichick was man enough with the whole country listening to take responsibility and admit his mistake. I didn’t like what he did but that was very easy to forgive.

Tommy could have done that. He could have admitted what the text messages clearly said that yes we deflated footballs to the legal limit and then call out the league for not caring about football preparation until now. His peers would have appreciated it and fans would have moved on. Instead he smashed his cell phone. Not hard to figure out why he would do that even with zero risk to anything personal getting leaked.

Tainted legacy. Total fraud in every way. All of his accomplishments mean squat to me. Can’t even win a title without cheating and his teammates winning the ring for him.

I will never acknowledge this guy as the greatest QB of all time. Ever. 🙁

  41. Tommy must have been so jealous of Peyton Manning and the fact all fans love and admire Manning’s game and can’t stand Tommy’s little arm throwing 2 yard passes and getting credit for wins that his teammates earned not him. So he cheated. To what degree we don’t know since he smashed his cell phone.

Understandable I guess but doesn’t make it right.
