Marcus Jones: I thought Jets would try to kick it out of bounds

It looked like the Jets and Patriots would be going to overtime on Sunday afternoon, but that view changed on Jets punter Braden Mann‘s 10th punt of the day.

Marcus Jones fielded the punt, avoided a couple of tacklers and then took off upfield with Mann left as the only player with a chance to take him down. Mann couldn’t do it and Jones scored to give the Patriots a 10-3 win over their AFC East mates.

After the game, Jones said he was focused on ball security “because the wind was going crazy out there.” He also said he expected the Jets to do more to limit the chances of a return.

“My main thing is I thought they were going to let him try to kick it out of bounds due to the time on the clock,” Jones said, via a transcript from the team. “But the first thing was trying to make sure that I followed my teammates’ blocks. Then I saw the punter and I was like, if I make him miss, then I should be able to go the distance.”

Mann’s punt wasn’t close to the sideline and it didn’t have much hang time, which were both reasons why Jones was in position to play hero.

DeSean Jackson‘s memorable 2010 punt return to beat the Giants as a member of the Eagles ended with no time left on the clock. That’s the only punt return score to take place later than the one that made the Patriots winners this weekend.

  1. Another explosive barroom moment in New England. Not quite the level of the Malcolm Butler explosion but it rocked the building.

  2. Having seen the DeSean debacle live, I can’t believe Jets didn’t tell him to kick it out of bounds or at least sky high and short. Of course they don’t and he boots a line drive. Great return though…

  3. Someone will chime in and say “but what about the block in the back”? Both the officials on the field and in New York said that it wasn’t a block in the back. You don’t go by which direction the guy falls, but by where the force of the hit comes from. They said–correctly–that the force of the hit came from the side.

  4. 5-1 after a 1-3 start. Not bad. It might be better if they could score on offense. I had hoped the problems would be resolved, but even after factoring in the Jets playing good defense, the offense is just painful to watch. Now that the bye week has passed, I really don’t know if they can get better. The red zone offense is brutal. But living in the moment, I’ll thank God they picked Marcus Jones when they did.

  5. 3+ hours of painful, boring, terrible offense followed by 20 seconds of excitement. Not worth it watching these 2022 Patriots.

The Bills lost to the Jets 2 weeks ago. lmao”

    And?

The Pats scored 3 points on offense against the Jets, and needed a punt return w/ less than a minute left to get the win.

    And you’re bragging?

  7. I can never understand how alleged professional players and coaches DON’T understand situational football.

Clock needs to be run out (1) stay away from the sidelines (2) don’t run out of bounds.

Need a yard DON’T hand to a running back 7 yards deep in the backfield or run an empty set play.

Playing for OT with one play left PUNT THE BALL OUT OF BOUNDS! It isn’t hard I used to do it all the time when I punted.

Maybe Isray is onto something with hiring Saturday because week in and week out I see “professionals” make boneheaded stupid mistakes.

To be fair, it was a bit windy…..but a win is better than a loss. As you know, the Jets are much improved and the defense is legit.

More importantly, they held the Jets to 20 points in two games, for two wins, a total that the Jets scored vs Buffalo in one game.

I’m certainly not bragging here…. The engine on offense is not firing right on all cylinders. It’s just painful to watch, and the red zone offense is abhorrent.

I do think it is interesting that Belichick is playing with two phases of a three phase game, and still has the team at 6-4 and holding on to the 6th seed, right behind 5th seeded Buffalo. If they ever decide to play with a reasonably effective offense they could make things interesting.
