Matthew Stafford re-enters the concussion protocol

For whatever reason, the Rams dragged their feet about putting quarterback Matthew Stafford back in the concussion protocol. Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, the foot-dragging is over.

Stafford has re-entered the protocol, three days after exiting it.

Although coach Sean McVay would never admit that Stafford had a concussion, it’s not called the “ankle sprain protocol.” The fact that Stafford had to progress through a multi-step process to secure clearance to play clearly implies that he was indeed concussed. And he’s now concussed again.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Stafford is back in the concussion protocol.

It took more than a day for it to happen. And it’s possible that the Rams and/or the relevant doctors finally got pressured by the league and/or the union to make the call. Regardless, Stafford is now back in the protocol.

In six days, the Rams visit the Chiefs in Kansas City. It’s a rematch of a memorable shootout from November 19, 2018.

Since then, both teams have appeared in two Super Bowls. Both teams have won one. Currently, however, the Rams are imploding under the weight of a “fuck them picks” reckoning — and the Chiefs are the best team in the league.

  1. Remember when everyone wanted to hire the next Sean McVey …. Yeah I think that fad might be going the way of the fidget spinner

  2. Most thought the Lions would be picking in the top five again in the 2023 NFL draft. Which most likely they will be. Just not with their pick , but the Rams.

  3. The rams “won” a Super Bowl laid out for then by a league wishing to force LA to like them. Despite giving the SB to a LA team, they continue to fail in that market based on the opposing team fans regularly outnumbering the home team, and playing in half empty stadiums.

  4. I really think he’s going to retire. I think it’s a family decision, not a football decision. I think the decision has already been made. Give them some room. They’ll let us know soon enough.

The only thing that is certain is that the Lions will draft a bust.

  6. They have another Super Bowl win so it’s all good. Jerry Jones would do the same to get another SB win before he passes, same I think the Bears would do just to get Virginia a SB too.

  7. I know everyone loves this narritive about the picks, but it’s actually because the have like 8 o-lineman out. They had one on IR before the season started and two more joined after the Bills game. They haven’t started the same combination of people on the offensive line yet, ten games in. For the last game they had 7 guys off the line either on IR or out.

No one has that many decent oline guys, f them picks or not.

  8. The season is over for the Rams. I hope they sit Stafford for the rest of the season. Concussions aren’t something to mess with.

  9. Stafford is going to retire. The Rams sold their souls for a super bowl. Enjoy the next 5-10 years at the bottom of the league. By the way, you know what brings fans to a team…being competitive year in and year out, game in and game out. One title followed by years of losing gets you nothing but an empty stadium.

I’m fine with the all-in strategy. Go for it hard every few years and win the occasional SB. Nothing wrong with that.

  11. In 2022 the Rams drafted two OL, 4 DBs, an RB and an LB. Some teams did really well with there 1st and 2nd round choices. Others drafted busts. I’ll still take a quality veteran over a roll of the dice all day every day.

The big issue is the injuries on the OL. Pretty much all of OL who started the season are out.

Stafford threw a beautiful bomb, 50+ yards in the air, that landed right Tutu Atwell’s breadbasket. TD. Love to have him back this Sunday.

  12. No joking around for his own house he really needs to retire much too dangerous to keep playing

Bingo, the wife was pressuring to retire b4 this latest episode.

  14. This team had issues going into the season. The O-line was average at best, even when healthy. The best defensive players are slowing down (Donald, Ramsey, Wagner) and the cast around them is not great. Other than Kupp they had no consistent receiver. The running game has been a bust since Gurley left. it will take a while to rebuild, particularly since you have no, talented, young players in the pipeline and no first round pick this year.

  15. It’s the lame-o Pepsi and Pizza commercials!
They make me feel stupid, woozy, and nauseous, too.

The Rams paid for a trophy, and good for them. It’s all over now, though.

  16. Matthew: you are going to live longer than football. Think of Mike Webster and the other players who were damaged by concussions. You have a loving wife and family. Think of them and retire.

  17. Not sure what’s so hard to understand about sacrificing those picks to win a super bowl. As a fan of a team who has never won one I’d be thrilled if my team did the same.

    I forgot about that wife.
    Maybe he should keep playing.

  19. Stafford retires and the rams wiggle Rodgers from GB in last gasp for one more title before rebuild begins.packers get a raft of late round picks who come cheap.

  20. I too hope Staff is ok. Why did the league come down so hard on Miami, but LAR are doing the same thing to Matt and no one is saying anything.

Dude has the heart of a (real) Lion and the Rams will put him in there to be shredded.

I hate seeing him go the route of Jahvid Best.

  21. Head injuries are no joke so I hope he’s okay. As for the Rams strategy, they nearly won 2 Super Bowls with it. If McVay makes some adjustments to keep the pass rush off Goff against the Patriots there’s a good chance they also would have won that one. (And if that happens Stafford likely never goes to the Rams.) The strategy worked for them but very risky and good luck replicating it. Pick the wrong free agents or suffer some injuries and you run the franchise into the ground without winning a thing.

  22. Time for him to retire. Never looked like himself at all this year from day one. Of course if he retires he loses all those commercials.
