Kyle Shanahan: We’re very fortunate to have Jimmy Garoppolo

For most of this offseason, it was assumed that Jimmy Garoppolo‘s time in San Francisco was done. But Garoppolo eventually agreed to return for another year, Trey Lance was lost for the season in Week Two, and now it’s Garoppolo who has the 49ers making another playoff run.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is grateful.

“Jimmy’s doing a great job,” Shanahan said after Monday night’s 38-10 win over the Cardinals. “Jimmy always has. When Jimmy’s been healthy out there, we’ve had our guys around him, he plays at a high level, and I think he did that today as good as he has. We’re very fortunate to have him.”

Garoppolo completed 20 of 29 passes for 228 yards, with four touchdowns and no interceptions against the Cardinals. With Garoppolo playing the way he has, the 49ers are going to be a tough team to beat in the postseason, as they have been every year that a healthy Garoppolo has been in San Francisco.

  1. Shanahan and Lynch are very lucky that a situation that they handled so poorly has worked out so well. Jimmy G is the sole reason why, he has been the constant stabilizing force.

  2. Never understood the Jimmy hate. He had his moments where he f’d up but every QB does. We have this flaw in our society where we write the book on players as if they can’t evolve. After a couple years we think they are who they are. Jimmy is seeing the field better than he has in the past and has elevated his game. For some reason no one thought that could happen. When Trey Lance gets healthy he will elevate his game and become a better fullback!

  3. Funny how things turn out .. before the season began he was the team’s trash and couldn’t find anybody to take out their trash. Now, he’s better than sliced bread and the team loves him. Jimmy is sitting in a great spot after this season; pay me big time money or pound sand.

  4. Fortunate enough to have botched trading him.
No way their offense is running this smoothly with Lance.

  5. Imagine how good the 49ers would be if they didn’t make that completely ridiculous trade to move up for Lance. This isn’t an indictment or detraction of Trey Lance but rather how much capital should be on this current squad.

  6. Its good for them to come out and say that given what he has delivered after the way things were in the offseason.

  7. Too bad they scrapped their whole draft after one bad throw in the Super Bowl. You forgot about the 100 great throws that got you there in the first place.

  8. Well, you say that after beating the Cardinals. But when you play an actual pro team, you can’t find a locker big enough to hide Jimmy G and his ego in.

  9. They couldn’t have tried any harder to get rid of him months back, their were no takers.

  10. Yet they were all in with Trey Lance through the entire off-season and camp. How does that taste now coming out coach?

  11. When people were wondering why Kyle Shanahan was using Trey Lance like a RB and subjecting him to possible injury, now you know why. Kyle’s job is to win football games. This team is a winning team when they get average or above average QB play. That’s what they get with Jimmy. They don’t get it with Trey. Usually when you lose your starting QB, your season is over. But the opposite is true with the 49ers. Seriously, did Kyle really think Trey was going to stay healthy using him the way he was? Kyle wasn’t born yesterday.

  12. Hopefully he leaves after his contract expires because of the way Shanahan and 49ers treated him.

  13. Trey Lance was a horrid pick for Shanny and Lynch. It’s going to be multiple seasons since the kid played any meaningful football and the cost to draft him was high in round 1 picks. If you want to see a completely messy situation stay tuned this offseason and watch what goes on for that Bay Area Football team.

  14. Unlike some of the diva QB’s in the NFL, Jimmy comes across as being a great team mate and humble person.

  15. To think, this team would be even better if they didn’t waste those picks on Trey Lance in the first place.

  16. Oh, my. Time for the overreaction. If the Niners go deep into the playoffs, there will be a bidding war for FA Jimmy G. Maybe he played it right after all, sticking with SF and their tough D and offensive weapons, likewise betting on himself.

  17. Honestly really rooting for the guy. They treated him like trash that they put out on the curb.

  18. Shannahan is lucky Lance got hurt otherwise he might be on the chopping block. Lance is not lucky he got hurt, but he will better because of more time on the sidelines learning.

  19. Clara has one of the best TE’s, RB, defenses, and WR group in the league…but they also have a coach known for choking when the lights get bright. It’s not if Clara will choke but when and how. I’m grateful Clara has Shanahan.

  20. Jimmy G. is setting himself up for another big payday in the off-season from the Colts or Jets if the 49ers do not come to their senses, swallow any remaining pride, and give up on Lance and re-sign Jimmy G.

  21. Jimmy G’s talent has never been the question. His durability is the only reason he is not a top 10 QB.

I have no issue with, nor did I come here to trash Jimmy G. That said, let’s be honest: It’s a whole lot easier to “see the whole field” when your team surrounds you with more weapons than a small country.
With the addition of Christian McCaffrey and the maturation/return to health of several other athletic receivers there’s almost always someone open, no matter in which direction Jimmy looks.

  23. lol at people who can’t handle Jimmy G and Kyle getting along and the team winning in dominant fashion.

  24. Jimmy has saved the front offices asses for the draft chips they gave up for lance…..

If I were them, I’d resign him next year too. Don’t risk having some scrub as a backup if lance goes down again.

  25. I get wanting to upgrade, due to the injuries, but they will be, if they’re not already, regretting trading away all those picks for Lance.

  26. That statement is laughable by Shanahan because himself & John Lynch very openly & underhandedly tried their best to trade him because both thought Lance was the answer! Also thinking Garapolo had higher value for some team that would surely lose a starting QB early on…not knowing it would be themselves! Lol

He’d be an absolute fool to go to either team with such horrible owners and environments. He’s not dumb.

  28. The funniest thing of all is that Washington would rather have Carson Wentz, Carolina would rather have Baker Mayfield and Indianapolis Matt Ryan. Shows more than anything there are a lot of dumb people at the top of NFL franchises.

  29. Jimmy G gonna get PAID (again). Whether it’s the 49ers or someone else. The Jets are on line 1 already. I hope Trey Lance rented and didn’t buy.

  30. Jimmy has a noodle arm compared to a lot of other quarterbacks, but of all the free agents from last year he towers above the mall

  31. We all know Jimmy will soil himself the first time anyone puts pressure on him.

But hey, they beat the Cards who are 5-12 in their last 17 games and who started a 36 year old journeyman backup at QB so another cheer of Super Bowl bound by the fanbase who had to be instructed on when to get loud and when to get quiet, and who have never personally seen the Niners win a Super Bowl.

    LOL

  32. So next summer does the media kick him back to the curb and run stories how he will need to find a back up job.

  33. Ask yourself if you could pick between Jimmy G and a troubled moody but yet still more talented Rodgers for the next 2 seasons who would you choose ?

  34. I thought when the Fish hired McDaniels that the GM Grier would make some insane trade for Garapolo – lucky for San Fran that never materialized. And if Miami actually had him as QB2 when Tua got hurt early they might be undefeated.

    —————————————————-

Yeah, it’s funny – I’ve read on here a bunch of times how Jimmy G “lost the SB for the 49ers”. It’s a team game, so blaming one person is ridiculous. He got them to the SB, but they lost so he was expendable.

What about Mahomes? 2/4 in AFC Championship games and 1/2 in SBs. Guess he sucks, too.

Having said that, as someone said above – Jimmy G looks great because SF is a good team right now. McCaffrey was a great signing and Deebo is just an unreal talent. If Jimmy G was to sign with a less talented team we would see, again, for the millionth time, that a good QB doesn’t suddenly make a mediocre team better. Now, the Jets might be a good fit, as they’re really doing well under Salah. They could’ve used him to beat the Pats the other day – though the refs “missing” an egregious block in the back penalty to let NE win the game is something no one can account for.

  36. Why is it that teams feel if they don’t have the very best QB, they must upgrade? The QB’S who win consistently do one thing much better than QB’s that don’t win. They take outstanding care of the ball and don’t turn it over often. In the NFL, that alone wins you 65% of the time.

This is called revisionist history. It wasn’t just that overthrow to sanders. He had a very bad 4th quarter. He also very little against Green Bay and the NFC championship win was because of the running game.
This board is full of Jimmy praise and he deserves it for this game. But did everyone forget the safety just a few games ago.
He just makes dumb decisions every now and then, more frequently than other good QBs. I like Jimmy but he can’t carry the niners.

  38. @touchback6

I do not disagree with you regarding the Jets and Colts ownership, but $100 million+ with tens of millions guaranteed over four years will be tough tor Jimmy G. to pass up no matter the owner.

  39. After what we all witnessed last night, the Shanahan haters still have to find fault, if they aren’t too busy hating on Garoppolo or Lance.

The fact is that Shanahan and Lynch have put a great team together, easily one of the top 3 teams in the league. We won’t know how Lance would have worked out, but the haters will still act as if they could see the future and Lance failed.

  40. “Ask yourself if you could pick between Jimmy G and a troubled moody but yet still more talented Rodgers for the next 2 seasons who would you choose ?”

I’d choose Garoppolo. He’s playing great and the locker room loves him. The Niners play as a team with Jimmy. Rodgers is a cancer.

At least get somethings right. Openly and underhandedly do not go together. Fact is they openly tried to trade him. Jimmy knew from the get go that he’ll be traded. Unfortunately, he had the surgery on his shoulder (not saying he shouldn’t have) and the trade market tanked. Hence they kept him at a lower contract. And Jimmy was happy about it. It did turn out fortuitous for both parties.
Don’t see anything wrong with any of this.

  42. I don’t really see a realistic way the Niners can hold onto Jimmy G after the season. I’m not sure he will feel inclined to stay anyway after how they treated him. I would consider the Jets, Colts, Raiders (if Carr is gone), Buccaneers (if Brady retires), and Falcons to be early favorites. Saints would be in the mix if they had any cap space.

The 49ers cannot tag Jimmy as part of the restructure and will already be up against the cap with Nick Bosa requiring a record-setting new contract so Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch are going to probably have to just roll with Lance and a cheap veteran backup like Nick Foles and hope it works.

  43. Hahaha. Shanahan knows he’s terrible-just as the rest of us do. Jimmy is going to be saved by a stacked team around him, then choke it away in the playoffs.

Yeah! ghostofnitschke, even I am disgruntled after Jimmy and the Niners beat us in the playoffs last year. They dashed our hopes of winning the Super Bowl and kept me from getting another ring.

Funny that earlier in the year they wanted to trade him, but now theyre glad hes there
    ———-
Change in circumstances can change your attitude- is that hard to comprehend. They didn’t dislike Jimmy. They just felt that his health is an issue and he may not be able to get them over the hump.

  46. One thing for certain — the 49ers don’t deserve any loyalty from Jimmy G in the off-season (no way they can afford to franchise him).

  47. Easy to say all this in hindsight, isn’t it? Big Niners fan here, and I totally disagreed with the Lance pick. We had a guy, JG. Lynch and Shanny got suckered on this one, sorry guys. You mortgaged the future, and now look. We have all the pieces in place for another SF/KC rematch. Don’t muck it up this time. Trade Lance in the spring and get what you can in draft capital since the scouts have nothing to do otherwise, re-sign JG to an incentive laden deal, and get Foles to backup. Now, see? How hard is that.

  48. The thing that most people are missing here is that Jimmy has been getting better since CMC joined the team. If that’s really the case, then the 49ers will be a threat to win it all.

Good point, CMC signing and playing the 17th, 29th and 31st ranked defenses.
