Mike McCarthy says Jaylon Smith jumping into a pile was not a dirty play

When Giants linebacker Jaylon Smith jumped into a pile of players on Thanksgiving, landing on Cowboys center Tyler Biadasz, it looked more like a flying elbow in pro wrestling than a legitimate football play. But Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy says Smith wasn’t doing anything dirty.

McCarthy said that Smith — who was drafted by the Cowboys and played for them until they cut him a year ago — was just playing the game the energetic way he plays it.

“If you watch Jaylon play a lot, he jumps a lot,” McCarthy said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “That’s something that’s all over the tape. I don’t think it’s out of character for him.”

Smith has been making an impact for the Giants this season and played a season-high 68 defensive snaps on Thanksgiving. That WWE-style move was the play that drew the most attention, but McCarthy doesn’t think it was anything to worry about.

  1. “He jumps a lot”. Dude that’s about as lame of an excuse as it can get. Maybe for a 5 year old but not a grown man. I can appreciate coach standing up for his players, but got to come up with something better than that. If it was up to me he jumped his azz into a fine and suspension. Hell, coach ought to get fined too for such a lame excuse.

  2. McCarthy wasn’t the person that could have been injured on the play. It was a dirty play.

  3. He was always known for jumping on after the play was over. Then he’d do his Swipe celebration, even though he wasn’t the one to stop the play.

  4. “That’s something that’s all over the tape. I don’t think it’s out of character for him.”

That sums it up … just because that is the way he plays doesn’t make it right.

  5. shoepik you do realize Smith is on the Giants and Mike is the coach of the Cowboys right? Not sure how Mike is sticking up for his players here.

  6. Jimmy “superfly” Stuka jumped a lot too. If Smith whacks some guy with a coconut, then what will McCarthy say.

He doesn’t play for the Cowboys.

  8. Sorry yall, my bad. So irked by the blatant pile on I lost sight of the fact it wasn’t his own player the coach was making an excuse for. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

  9. I don’t know, sure looked a bit uncalled for and a likely way to cause unnecessary injury, not sure that defines a legit way to play

  10. This was precisely why the Packers would rack up 10-12 penalties a game when you were head coach. No discipline for your players. You talk discipline, but you don’t back it up in any way, which is why your team is perpetually on the wrong side of the yellow flag.

  11. For everyone who isn’t grasping this… MIKE MCCARTHY ISNT THE PLAYERS COACH.

This didn’t sound like an “excuse”, he threw subtle shade with the “jumps a lot” comment and also is doing nothing but deflecting the absurdity of the action and moving on. What should he do? Play fake tough guy and run up to the stands yelling at the opposing fans or yell across the field at the other team like some other NFC East coaches?
