Report: Colorado has offered Deion Sanders its head-coaching job

Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders may be ready to take a step to a bigger college coaching job.

Sanders, who is currently the head coach at Jackson State, has been offered the head-coaching job at Colorado and has interest in the job, according to Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports.

Sanders’ track record at Jackson State has been impressive. Taking over a team that went 4-8 the year before he arrived, Sanders went 4-3 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, then went 11-2 in 2021 and is 11-0 so far this season. It’s easy to see why a Power 5 school like Colorado would be interested in his services.

Once a national powerhouse, Colorado has fallen on hard times recently. The Buffaloes are 1-10 this year and have finished below .500 in 16 of the last 17 seasons.

  1. Good for Deion, I’ve always liked Deion, he’s an excellent football player but a terrific human being with a good heart!

  2. Deion is a no brainer for any school

He’s personable, has charisma, and teaches values. Also just his name and HOF career would relate to any top recruit in the country.

It’s not like he needs the money so he has the best interest for the athlete

Florida State dropped the ball not hiring him and Jackson State has reaped the benefits.

    Interesting definition of “recently”.

  4. The name recognition alone is enough to have Colorado in the mix for all of the top recruits. It’s a no brainer move.

  5. Climb that ladder! He’s been paying his dues and has earned that next rung. How long until he gets a call from an NFL team?

In the context of when they were national powerhouses, the last 17 years would classify as recently.

Especially when none of those 17 seasons are distinguishably different from each other.

  7. You can argue Colorado is a huge step DOWN in terms of football program compared to Jax state. Pay will be huge, sure, but that program is one of the worst in the country. If I were him I’d just wait for a real program

  8. I’d love to see Deion stay at Jackson State and turn them into a national powerhouse. Now that college players can legally get paid while they’re still in college, Deion should be able to come up with the financial support to be able to make promises to the top players (recruits) in the country. I’m sure there are plenty of college players that would rather see Deion succeed, than whoever else is recruiting them. I mean, that’s how Deion has gotten this far. He’s a good recruiter. He’s Deion Sanders. If Deion can get a handful of five star players, he’ll dominate. That would be cool to see Jackson State winning National Championships. If Deion leaves Jackson State, it would have to be at a top school like Notre Dame. Colorado? Seriously? In the larger scope, Colorado is not a better job than Jackson State. Deion is making history. There’s only one Deion Sanders. He has abilities that no other man has. He’s just too big for Colorado. I’d never go to the NFL, if I were Deion. The thought of working for some of the incompetent NFL owners is not something I’d waste my career on. Mark Davis, Jim Irsay. Dan Snyder. The Houston owner. I mean, the grass isn’t always greener on the NFL side of the fence.

  9. Deion seems like a no-nonsense guy. Id dont know if he’d be able to deal with the attitudes in the NFL. College may be his thing.

  10. If only he had the coaching experience of Jeff Saturday. He would have been offered a job in the NFL already. Melatonin matters.

  11. “In the context of when they were national powerhouses, the last 17 years would classify as recently.”

Give it up already. The iPhone hadn’t even been released.

  12. It’s always about the money. Deion has said as much. The question is whether or not the Colorado facilities are up to par right now and whether or not he can recruit to win there. Rhule going to Nebraska and Riley at USC makes recruiting there even more difficult. All three with heavy recruiting ties in Texas too. I might wait a year if I’m prime time.

  13. As the saying goes, “You are who your record says you are.” Sanders has has earned the attention he’s getting as a Head Coach prospect.

  14. I don’t think Deion going to Colorado and he knew he won’t be in spotlight because of famous Russell(LOOK AT ME)Wilson .

  15. Deion always looked good in that Blue Star… Jerry has the dough to make it happen and has recently been under fire for never having hired a black head coach… McCarthy had better make it out of the Wild Card Round, or Prime might end up walking the Cowboys sideline…

  16. Living in Colorado much of my life I have become a fan of the Buffs. I hope he takes this job but I would advise him not to. Deon is no dummy and he knows what it takes to win at the Power 5 level and unless CU is going to finally put some money into the program they won’t improve even if Nick Saban took them over. CU facility’s are worse than what most Texas High School players experience. Their conference is falling with only Oregon remaining that can produce any high profile match ups. Unless they assure him new facilities and a change in conferences I don’t see him taking this job.

  17. I never thought Sanders would be a good college coach. I was wrong. Which is wierd. I’m never wrong. Just ask me.

  18. Prime’s a very trending up head coach while the Pac-12 is a very trending down conference. I see no way Prime goes there at all. There’s only one place for him and that is Florida State. Nothing else makes any sense.

So there’s no outcry here like there was with Jeff Saturday hire?

It’s one step up. Not Friday at the local HS to the NFL.

You are legitimately more LOOK AT ME than Russ, with how much you use that when he’s not relevant at all to the convo. Your obsession is sad to watch.

  21. Deion is coaching at Jackson so that he can coach his sons, and get them into the NFL. He is not leaving them at Jackson State so that he can go to Colorado. FACT

The SWAC has a tie in with the Celebration Bowl. So as long as Deion is winning conference championships with Jackson State he won’t be taking them to the FCS playoffs unless the conference breaks that relationship.

  23. I like his approach and the way he connects with the student athlete, he wants to install character first and foremost, I heard him comment once he wanted no part of dealing with professional athletes, he knows and understands his calling, good for him

  24. Would Deion have been able to play for Deion, because the way Coach Deion talks is completely opposite of the way player Deion behaved.

  25. I think he’d be better suited to wait around for an ACC or SEC gig. The pac 10 as we all know it is going to get gutted in terms of exposure and prominence as ‘SC and UCLA are on their way out. That leaves the fashion show in Eugene as the only “high profile” program left. He’s better than that.

  28. I got banned from Virginia Tech message board at first used a funny name Richard Gobbler now I understand that. But then I changed my username and the banned me because a few times I suggested from a friends idea that Virginia Tech hire him . My friend played at Colorado that suggested him at first. The head of the Hokie site didn’t ban a guy that said he wouldn’t fit the not the culture and a few other comments that basically seemed like they had hard time with having coach of country lor. You need too recruits to win championships and if he was getting five and four stars and being ranked in top 20 , think what he’d be doing at Virginia Tech ? Everyone in the country would want to play for Deion there! He might have turned job down but they could have offered and if accepted he’d make it DBU again! He might have accepted and Virginia Tech would be in the rilunnibg for a championship finally again. He would bring swag media galore and money to the program and is a good coach.

  29. Neon Deon will remain at JSU. He has made history and the rest is yet to come.

    Stand-by.

    Thank you.

  30. Did a commenter above really say that Deon is too big for Colorado while he coaches Jackson State?

  31. Does he like to smoke pot by chance? He could smoke as much as he wants in Colorado & even still be more productive than the current regime!

Back in reality… They are dreaming.

Yeah right. Colorado is a Huge step “DOWN”. Do you know that Colorado is in the PAC12 with schools like UCLA, USC, STANFORD, OREGON………while Jackson State is in the SWAC with powerhouses like Alcorn St. Prairie View, Arkansas-Pine Bluff…….go play with your turtles kid.

Step down? How many successful programs are looking for a new HC? What nationally ranked team does JSU play?

  34. Weird how the media just up and decided to stop pushing the Eric Bienemy nonsense. He played there, coached there, got fired for hiring women to “entertain” the players and just last year was being pronounced as the 2nd coming of Zeus. Now, crickets….

  35. The FSU coach is on the hot seat and if he gets fired next year, Deoin will bolt. I guess its still worth it because of the name recognition.

  36. Lol @CU and Boulder… ask them how the whole go woke, go broke thing is working out. Disgustingly woke city and university that deserves 0-12 year after year.

The dozens of people in Boulder who pay attention to CU football deserve better than 0-12.

  38. McCartney. That’s the name of the last successful coach at Colorado. Not at all recent.

Hell yeah!!! Hire Deion. Cannot lose.

He’s a celebrity, not a big league head coach.
    ——————————-

26-5 as a celebrity is not bad. Clueless in Miami.

  41. Funny people are saying he should wait for an SEC or ACC job. There’s one available. Problem is not SEC or ACC program would take that leap at this point. He needs a CU to give him a power 5 chance. He does well there and in a few years the SEC and ACC will be beating down his door. But it’s too soon right now.

  42. As already noted above, Colorado has some of the worst facilities among schools in the major conferences. Their budget for assistant coaches is also relatively small. Worst of all, they don’t have a large group of wealthy boosters to help set up NIL deals. It may be possible to turn that program around, but it would take several years, and Deion is already 55. He should say “No thanks”.

  43. For all those saying CU has the worst facilities in the power 5, maybe you should do some research before your start running your mouths.

  44. Would be great but not getting my hopes up. His kids are athletes at JS and certainly doesn’t need the $.
He’ll likely hold out for D1 gig in the south.

    ^^^^^^^^^^

If that were the case, Mort, then Jackson State would not be 11-0.

  46. He should hold out, there may be bigger jobs coming up in a few weeks. especially if Hairball gets an NFL offer, Michigan would be a huge feather for Sanders and with his recruiting they could dominate for a long time.

  47. Maybe Deion will never leave Jackson State. Coach Eddie Robinson remained at Grambling State, another of the historically black universities, for 56 years (interrupted by WWII). Coach Robinson is recognized as one of the greatest coaches of all time and made a huge contribution to his school and the Grambling community. Deion could do well to embrace Coach Robinson as a role model.
