Seahawks’ Darrell Taylor ran off sideline onto field to block after interception, refs didn’t notice

Seahawks linebacker Darrell Taylor committed one of the weirdest penalties you’ll ever see in an NFL game on Sunday — except that it wasn’t a penalty, because the officials didn’t see it.

It happened on the Raiders’ first offensive play, an interception thrown by Derek Carr to Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs. The video of the play clearly shows Taylor, No. 52, on the sideline at the time Diggs intercepts the pass. Then Taylor runs onto the field and blocks Raiders wide receiver Mack Hollins during Diggs’ interception return, before continuing to celebrate after Diggs runs out of bounds.

Obviously, that’s a penalty, but the officials didn’t notice and didn’t throw a flag. The replay official also should have noticed but didn’t — all turnover plays are supposed to be automatically reviewed, and 12 players on the field is a reviewable penalty, whether it’s called on the field or not. The Raiders could not have challenged the play because it was a turnover; the replay could only come from upstairs.

What was Taylor thinking? He may have thought Diggs was down by contact when he made the diving interception and was running onto the field to celebrate, thinking the play was over. But once he was on the field and the play was still going on, Taylor illegally participated by blocking Hollins.

It was a bad mistake by Taylor and a bad mistake by the officials.

  1. Is anyone really surprised that the officials on the field, as well as the reviewing officials missed this? collective officiating has been atrocious all season, and it keeps getting worse.

  2. Same old moniker – NFL officiating stinks! Start training new officials right now (especially ex-players) so when the contract expires the NFL can show the current officials the door. Too many out of shape older men who cannot keep up! I’m 70 years old & NFL officiating keeps getting worse – too many rules were made to cover for incompetent officials.

You just said he blocked Mack Hollins so he didn’t think the play was over. It would’ve been funny if he made the key block to spring Diggs for a TD.

Remember when coach Mike Tomlin tried to take out a kick returner running down the sidelines to help his Steelers? Good times.

  4. How is it that the officiating just keeps getting worse and worse? The amount of missed calls this year, across the league, is crazy!

  5. This is actually hilarious.

The XFL or whatever B league should make this a rule. Once per game a 12th man can run on the field after the snap. Talk about exciting.

  6. It’s a good thing the Raiders have been too awful for it to matter this year, because they have been on the short end of a lot of outrageous calls- the 2 point conversion at the end of regulation in the AZ game clearly wasn’t a catch but made it through replay. Officials not even reviewing a turnover against the Saints that shouldn’t have counted. Davante Adams getting a $30 K fine for complaining about a helmet-to-helmet hit that wasn’t called but earned a $15 K fine. The entire second-half of the Chiefs game to make up for them inadvertently getting a favorable call for once. New regime, same as it ever was…

  7. ‘Talk about exciting.’

Talk about stupid. If you’re not lined up before the snap but running onto the field, you’re automatically behind the play anyway.

  8. Meh, it was the first play of the game the ref’s have a hard job and cant see everything all at once it happens in every game they miss something. My Radiers won anyway so its all good cant do anything about it now.

  9. Do you honestly think the league will take even one second to consider fining Darrell Taylor for this? Of course not. However if a review of the game shows Devante Adams with one sock an inch below the league rule, fully expect yet another $30,000 fine. 🙄

You mean like this guy, blocking on an interception return?

  12. Funny, it was just a month ago I think that SBNation covered this same situation in its Weird Rules series. Last time it happened was in a college game in the 50s or 60s.

  13. He clearly thought the play was over because he literally ran in front of Diggs as he was returning it. He might have tackled him himself if he hadn’t realized the play was still going on. He didn’t really block anyone, he just kind of got in someone’s way. I would think the team would fine him for being so incredibly stupid.

  14. Probably his best play all game. Fitting that the refs didn’t notice him… Nobody else did the whole game either because he didn’t do anything.
