Kevin Stefanski: Deshaun Watson has worked hard to be ready to go

Deshaun Watson is officially back on the Browns’ active roster and he is expected to start against the Texans this week in what will be his first regular season action since the end of the 2020 season.

Watson sat out all of last year while with the Texans and he was suspended for the first 11 games this year under the Personal Conduct Policy after being accused of sexual misconduct by more than 20 women. He has been practicing with the Browns for the last two weeks, but will get his first extended work with the first team since the summer this week and will have to knock off rust quickly as a result.

On Monday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said he didn’t know exactly how the long layoff will impact Watson in his return to action but said he feels confident that Watson is prepared for the task at hand.

“I have confidence in Deshaun based on his preparation and, really, the focus is on just him doing his job,” Stefanski said, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “I mean, we’re still gonna be all about the team effort, still offense, defense and special teams. So this is never, ever gonna be about one person. But as it relates to Deshaun, I believe in his preparation, I believe that he worked really hard on a bunch of things to be ready to go.”

Watson’s reinstatement would draw a lot of attention against any opponent, but it’s an even bigger deal with the Texans as the opposition this week. Stefanski said that the Browns will have to “put the blinders on” to anything other than preparing to play and we’ll see how well that goes come Sunday.

  1. The real question to be answered in a football sense is whether Deshaun Wadson is going to be better then Jacoby Brissett game over game after not playing for so long. Seems like a train wreck ready for prime time viewing.

  2. Now that Watson is coming back these delusional Cleveland fans are talking about running the table and making the playoffs. They have lost their minds.

  3. Browns will blow the doors off the Texans. Players don’t care about a guy who hasn’t played in 2 years and never wanted to be in Texas so there is no added motivation. Watch after the game old teammates will be shaking his hands and giving him hugs.

  4. Watson probably still thinks he did nothing wrong and now his suspension is over. Great job, NFL and the Browns, for empowering a true creep.

  5. Sad to see Josh Dobbs go as a result. Hopefully he goes somewhere in the NFC, he will get picked up without a doubt.

  6. The most Browns outcome would be Deshaun throws for 400 plus yards with like 3 INTs and they lose to the one win Texans.

  7. I’ve always found it amazing that the so called good coaches always have good QB’s and when those guys get hurt the coaching goes downhill. You can bet the coach is praying this guy comes in and saves him.

  8. Shame he didn’t spend his time making right on his past indiscretions. He could have made this a little easier on himself. Instead he chose to remain silent and disappear while further allegations arose. Disappointed in the NFL.

  9. Can’t connect the dots on DeShaun anyway. He was never THAT good of a QB to even suggest he will bring the Browns to the promised land. He threw tons of picks, got sacked all the time, always played hero ball instead of outsmarting the defense and taking what they gave him. Talented as hell, but not the smartest QB

  10. Which perfect QB do you root for? WHich QB do you root for that has no sin?
    I’ll wait………

  11. For everyone who says they should stick with Brissett….you do realize how much they are paying Watson right?? They have to start him. Chill out.

  12. All his misdeeds aside, I just don’t get the hype from a football perspective. From his contract you’d think he must have been carrying the Texans deep into the playoffs and probably has a ring or two. But then you’re reminded the Texans were loaded with talent but consistently underachieved and his best year statistically was when they went 4-12.

  13. You’re head is in the sand if you don’t realize at this point that while Deshaun was not a choir boy, he was definitely a target of an ambulance-chasing class action attorney promising paydays to every “therapist” he every encountered whether indiscretions or “relations” occurred or not. Just glad a guy that wasn’t tried for anything criminal can get on with his life and career after the media and public mob forced the NFL’s hand.

    Yeah… 70% comp% / 4,800 yds / 33 TDs / 7 INTs / 112 Rating in his last full season is just awful…. LOL

  15. I hope Watson’s O-Line lets him get “Paul Crewed” (a la Longest Yard), at least the 1st half of the game. Which would hopefully put him on IR for the rest of the season! Both he, and the Browns deserve it. Watson has zero business being on a football field.

  16. This is your guy, CLeveland. Do you think you will stop being a joke if you win games with this guy? Spoiler alert: you will not.

  17. I feel bad for Jacoby Brissett, having to turn his job over to this guy, who shouldn’t even be allowed on an NFL field again. Good luck, Cleveland…Watson hasn’t played in a game in 700 days.

  18. I don’t want to wish that something bad happens to Watson, but it sure would be encouraging to see him fail miserably so that Brissett replaces him.

Tons of picks? Season one: 19 TDs/8 INTs. Season two: 26 TDs/9 INTs. Season theee: 26 TDs/12 INTs. Season four: 33 TDs/7 INTs. Not that good? I guess all not that good QBs play in the Pro Bowl three seasons in a row.

  20. If he was on the market right now teams would be falling all over each other to sign him. That’s how the NFL operates; just win, baby…

  21. I have to wonder the last time an NFL starting QB has been benched after leading his boyz to an emotional victory for his team and city. The usual scenario is the opposite – Wilson getting benched after embarrassing his team and fans.

  22. All I heard before the season was how Russell Wilson was supposedly working hard to be ready to go too..

  23. Browns fans who are supporting this scumbag deserve all of the misery their team generates for them. Joke of a franchise, perennial dumpster fire.

  24. assuming stefanski is married with kids..i wonder what his wife has to say when she hears him complimenting and accepting this guy publicly. would be interesting to be a fly on the wall to hear that conversation

  25. Remember when everyonen said they’d never let Atlanta, Indianapolis, Carolina, and other teams off the hook for going after Watson? That they should be held just as responsible?
Bottom line, he paid for his indiscretions, served his time, took the publicity hits, et al. That “new” accusation turned out to be a money grab, and Watson’s attorney’s were pretty clear they thought there were a bunch more money grabs that got settled simply because it’s easier that way.
I’m not saying he’s perfect, but he’s done everything people asked of him. So yeah, his team and coaches are going to support him.

  26. I feel bad for the long suffering Browns fans and the city of Cleveland to have the team owner Haslam force this trash upon them

  27. i guess many of you forgot his last season playing with the texans, o’brien as coach AND gm TRADED their best player on offense not named watson (deandre hopkins) to arizona before the season started, jj watt was hurt as usual, and there were more injuries and even with 2nd/3rd stringers, watson put up pro bowl numbers. sure they went 4-12 but who could win with that AND bad coaching to boot? guy may be a creep but to say he’s a bad qb is simply being petty and trying to justify many of your vitriol

  28. “Yeah… 70% comp% / 4,800 yds / 33 TDs / 7 INTs / 112 Rating in his last full season is just awful…. LOL”

What’s funny about that statement is that you don’t realize those are the numbers most qb’s would put up if they faced a prevent defense for most the season.

  29. The Texans will be a good first game back for Watson to get going again. It may take time, but he will be a good QB again.

He threw tons of picks, got sacked all the time, always played hero ball instead of outsmarting the defense and taking what they gave him. Talented as hell, but not the smartest QB////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////104 td’s to 36 ints with a 104.5 rating for his career. His last season, 4800 yards, 33 td’s, 7 ints.112.4 rating. The 7-9 and 8-8 he went his last 2 years were both playoff appearances in which he still won a playoff game with that train wreck of a roster. The 8-8 was also the best record in franchise history, who could do more there? Like him or not, he’s better than you think he is.

  31. He will be harrassed and stalked the rest of his waking days and he will deserve every minute of it for being a serial predator and ruining so many people’s lives.

  32. “The 8-8 was also the best record in franchise history, who could do more there?”
    __________

Great QBs are expected to elevate teams so saying Watson is no better than 8-8 isn’t an argument in his favor. And the Texans had tons of talent for most of his time there; at least as talented as this current Browns team. Are you saying the Browns are going to be lucky to be .500 with Watson?

  33. I hope his football career crashes and burns spectacularly. Karma is not done with Watson…
