Robert Saleh: C.J. Mosley is “severely, grossly overlooked” as one of NFL’s best defensive players

The Jets’ defense is playing as well as any in the NFL right now, but head coach Robert Saleh says one player in particular isn’t getting enough credit: C.J. Mosley.

Saleh thinks Mosley ought to be a defensive player of the year candidate, and that he isn’t getting the credit he deserves.

“He’s severely, grossly overlooked,” Saleh said. “He’s every bit in the conversation as good as anybody. As good as anyone.”

It’s been a long road for the 30-year-old Mosley to reach this point. When he signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Jets in 2019, the team had big plans for him, but he played in just two games in his first season with the Jets because of injuries. Then he opted out of the 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and there were questions in New York about whether he’d ever make the impact he was supposed to. But Mosley started 16 games for the Jets last year and has started every game this year.

And now the Jets are playoff contenders, and Saleh says Mosley deserves as much credit for that as anyone.

  1. As a Buffalo Bills fan, I would absolutely agree he is top 5 in the NFL. He was all over the field like a man on fire. If CJ Mosley wasn’t playing in that game Bills might have won by two touchdowns. Sadly for us he was and he was annihilating any play to the middle of the field.

  2. A rising tide lifts all boats. Mosley is a fine starter, but this is coach hyperbole to build up a player. Last year when the talent around him was lower he was missing tackles and getting exposed in coverage. Maybe it was hard to give his best effort on a bad team. In any case, he ought to be playing like one of the best linebackers in the league since he’s certainly being paid like one.

  3. I thought after he got paid he mailed it in by milking his injury year one and then taking year 2 off to covid whereas he had all the leverage in his contract to do so. I have to admit after those two years off he had a decent year last year but he has really emerged as a force in that defense this year. I agree he is one of the most unsung defensive players in football at this current moment.

  4. Roquan Smith > CJ, Jets taking Baltimore leftovers again like Rex, Bart, Reed, Leonhard, etc. Add another to the long list of loser franchises that aren’t the Baltimore Ravens

  5. CJ is the quarterback of the defense which is very important..he is a sure tackler..but he is a liability in pass coverage and he doesn’t make a lot of tackles for loss..he is not on the level of a z Matt Milano or Fred Warner ..he ain’t chop liver but he is overpaid

  6. Mosley is overlooked cause he didn’t play for 2 years. He missed almost the entire 2019 season and sat out 2020. The world keeps churning.

  7. lol!!

He has been one of the most overrrated and overpaid players in football!

I rememebe he made a Pro Bowl once over Donta Hightower, Mr February. Absolutely hilarious.

  8. Wish someday a Jet could learn how to recover a loose ball. Doesn’t matter how many Jets are near the loose ball, the other team always gets it. It’s like Jets have a loose ball phobia that makes them freeze at the sight of a loose ball. Saleh should run fumble recovery drills everyday at the beginning of practice and again at the end of practice and send players home to practice loose ball drills in their living rooms and follow up with late night texts, emails, or phone calls to monitor their development.

  9. While the Patriots have been reduced to signing players off the Jets practice squad.

  10. Speaking of overlooked players. First ballot HOF QB has been in the top 2-3 QBs his entire career and now, with a really bad supporting cast and game plan, his top notch performances have been overlooked.

    _______________

    Nope that’s Devante Adamssss.

  12. Yet every week it’s TJ Watt this, Maxx Crosby that. I can’t place my finger on exactly why those guys are lauded and Moseley is ignored but it’s white in front of me.
