Baker Mayfield’s self-bet goes belly up

We love it when a guy bets on himself. If he wins, we can applaud him. If he loses, it’s not our money.

Soon-to-be-former Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield made a huge bet on himself to facilitate a trade from Cleveland. He would have made $19.9 million with the Browns, fully guaranteed. He gave up $4.6 million as part of the negotiations that culminated in the trade.

While $15.3 million is nothing to sneeze at, he gave up $4.6 million ($3.5 million plus the 17th game check of $1.1 million) in order to lay the foundation for a major free-agent deal in March. Now, he could end up being a free agent for very different reasons.

His $15.3 million compensation package was structured to include a base salary of $4.858 million. If someone claims his contract,  they’ll owe him $1.349 million over the rest of the season.

Some presume the 49ers will do it. The contrary argument is that rookie Brock Purdy knows the system well, he’s much cheaper, and he did very well on Sunday, with no advance notice that he’d be playing.

Others could take a waiver-claim flier under the argument that you should never turn down a chance to evaluate a potential franchise quarterback. The Raiders and Patriots come to mind, given that the Patriots (when Raiders coach Josh McDaniels was on the staff) had a fascination with Mayfield.

For any team that would claim, and land, the contract, they’d have more than a month to get to know him — along with exclusive negotiating rights until March.

If Mayfield isn’t claimed, he can collect the balance of his 2022 salary from the Panthers and then sign with any team he wants, while keeping both checks. (It’s possible that he agreed to waive termination pay, however, in order to secure his release from the Panthers.)

Regardless, it’s clear that Mayfield should have refused to give up a penny to pave the way for a trade to the Panthers. He bet on himself. And the bet has gone belly up, with $4.6 million gone — and never coming back.

  1. The Patriots are desperate because they know Noodle Arm is a bust. I could see them making a play for Mayfield.

  2. He gave up more than the $4.6m. He turned down a 4 year 30 million dollar deal last year from Cleveland. We’re all very glad he did that, but that was the ultimate self-bet that went belly up. He’s just not that good.

Mac Jones remains the best QB of his draft class. Numbers don’t lie.

  4. I can’t find a team that will pick him up. Maybe Houston or the colts. And even the colts feel like a stretch. Wow. Did not expect this news today.

  5. Also, mayfield gave up a whole lot more than $4.6M. Cleveland offered him $30M per year which mayfield regarded as an insult. The rejected offer then began Cleveland’s plan to replace baker.

  6. Any team fool enough to claim Mayfield is being conned out of their money and they deserve it.

He is not, never has been and never will be a starting NFL QB. He doesn’t have the head for it. As he has proven with 2 of the worst teams in the league.

If you REALLY want to kick the tires (and I have no clue as to why you would but it is your time and money) on Mayfield then you offer him a league minimum and bring him in after the season is over.

  7. On the one hand, betting on yourself shows confidence and moxie. On the other hand, if someone “bet on themself” in Vegas and lost $4-million, we’d think him an idiot. I’d say tough break for Baker, but let’s be real, he’s made more in 3-4 years than most of us commenters will make in a lifetime. He had his chance, and it turns out he’s not good enough like roughly 60% of QB’s drafted in the first round.

  8. “Mac Jones remains the best QB of his draft class”. Is that like being the skinniest guy at a fat camp? He’s the 4th best QB in the AFC ..East.

  9. Oh he’ll still get chances. At being a backup QB. His career as a starter is effectively over at this point.

  10. “Hmmmmm? Baker Mayfield or JaMarcus Russell? Tough choice”

Starting wonder if Lawrence is playing himself into that conversation.

  11. His starting days aren’t done yet. Not sure if you watched that catastrophe led by Matt Ryan last night. Even coming in initially as a backup to Mac Jones may give the guy the ability to start eventually in NE since Mac isn’t cutting it either. Texans may take a flieer. Point is, he’ll have one more chance somewhere.

  12. Coulda had almost $20 mil guaranteed to NOT PLAY. Just think about that. All he had to do was sit on his couch and stay home all year… Instead, he chose poorly. What an idiot.

  13. According to reports Baker asked to be released. So this is the second team he’s tucked tail and quit on.

Any team that signs him is a fool. He now has a reputation of “If I’m not the starter, I quit”.

  14. Wondering where all the Oklahoma fans are that were so adamant that Cleveland would regret how they treated him….

  15. Macs issues are with his non existent under qualified & “only by name” offensive coordinator position coach Matt Patricia who, just happens to also be, the O-LINE coach as well….. ALL OF THAT is on BB…..I’m truly lost on what he is doing to this poor kids mind & conference by putting him in that position in only his 2nd year ESPECIALLY after investing a 1st round pick in him, the MOST IMPORTANT POSITION, on the team….Mr. Kraft needs to get involved here!!!!!

    Really?

Mayfield won a Playoff game. The Browns hadn’t won a Playoff game since 1994.

Wholeheartedly agree with this…..say what you want about Mayfield, but Russell was 10x the bust that Mayfield is.

That being said, I guess he is “off the leash” again.

  19. People living off “Baker won a playoff game” are really reaching for straws. That seems like eons ago.

  20. He will succeed in a mature, winning, stable organization that develops–not destroys–talent: Pats; Steelers; Ravens; Packers.
