Mark Andrews: Tyler Huntley was “calm, cool, confident” in Sunday’s win

Sunday was shaping up to be a bleak day for the Ravens.

Lamar Jackson left the game with a knee injury in the second quarter and they were losing to the downtrodden Broncos 9-3 in the fourth quarter when they took possession on their own nine-yard-line with five minutes left to play. Given how the rest of the day had gone, no one would have been blamed for expecting comeback hopes to fizzle out.

Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley didn’t let that happen, however. The Ravens went on a 16-play drive that ended with Huntley running for a two-yard touchdown with 28 seconds left on the clock. The late heroics gave the Ravens a 10-9 win and earned Huntley a rave review from tight end Mark Andrews.

“Calm, cool, confident. [He was] acting like he’s been there before, which he has,” Andrews said, via the team’s website. “So, just so much love and respect for his game and what he’s able to do. That was a good Broncos team, a good Broncos defense, and the way he was slinging the ball was crazy. When he’s able to get out of the pocket, it’s big-time plays. Obviously, he’s been able to learn a ton from Lamar, but his game is very polished.

The Ravens don’t think Jackson’s season is over, but it’s a good bet that he is going to miss more time and that will keep Huntley front and center in the offense. After the final minutes of Sunday’s game, that prospect seems less daunting for the Ravens.

  1. Huntley is a good backup QB. Did what you hope which do enough to beat a bad team. Still done without Lamar Jackson. There is no one else on this team capable of making plays. Holding Russell Wilson to 9 points is a lot easier than Mahomes, Burrow or Tyreek Hill led offenses.

  2. The Ravens front office has seen enough to realize Jackson is not the answer. They should have traded him to some middling team and got what they could for him when they had the chance.

  3. They’re finished, by a miracle they got tue win against a terrible team. The bengals are beating quality opponents every week and Baltimore is barely treading water. Cincinnati is just a decisively better team at this point.

  4. I was at the game and Huntley instantly gave the Ravens a spark. If he plays well it only puts more pressure on Lamar.

  5. I’d like to see Huntley get a shot at starting somewhere. I’m not gonna pretend to break down Xs and Os, but I don’t think the Ravens offense and personnel fit Huntley; he needs an offense that is more pass centric. (That is not a shot at Lamar. I think of yards from a QB like OBP in baseball— don’t care how you get the yards). Just pointing out that Huntley is really good and might not be a good fit for the Baltimore offense.

  6. Yeah, great job at home barely beating awful Denver by 1 point and scoring 10 points.

    All the way!

  7. A win is a win, but I’ve never seen anyone look bad more often in a win more than the Ravens. Ravens fans can lecture me all they want about 8-4 or whatever but superbowl winning teams curbstomp the bad more often than not. Bad pass defense, bad offense even with Lamar. How or why they’re 8-4 idk but they’ll be one and done, maybe to Cincinnati of all teams who remarkably seems like way more of a desirable franchise

  8. I expected this game to be a 17-6 or 13-6 game as Denver’s defense is legit. The offense looks awful regardless of who is playing QB. Might be time for an offensive reboot after the season is over.

Lol. They had 3 points 59 minutes into the game. If that’s a “spark” then you must think Russell Wilson is downright electrifying. Lol

  10. Say what you want I’d argue Huntley is a better, more accurate passer than Jackson. He’s not as dynamic (yet) as Jackson. So he’s really not a downgrade. He did what I thought he’d do.

Worst 8-4 team I’ve seen like the Jets are the worst 7-5 team I’ve ever seen.

And the Patriots are still looking up at the Jets, mired in last place. And how many points did they score against Buffalo? Wasn it ten?
