Patrick Mahomes: The Bengals executed at a higher level in critical situations

The Chiefs suffered another close loss to the Bengals on Sunday, marking the third time in the calendar year 2022 that Kansas City has fallen to Cincinnati.

After the game, quarterback Patrick Mahomes said the Bengals “executed at a higher level in critical situations.”

“We started off slow,” Mahomes said, via ArrowheadPride.com. “We got back in the game, in the flow of things. Then we had a turnover late — and then the missed kick. If you’re playing good teams and you make that turnover on downs basically in the fourth quarter, those are the things that kind of bite you in the end.”

Tight end Travis Kelce fumbled when Kansas City was up 24-20 in the fourth quarter with an opportunity to extend the lead. Then Harrison Butker sent a 55-yard field goal wide right that would have tied the game at 27 with 3:24 left in the contest.

Those are errors by players who don’t usually make them, particularly Kelce’s fumble.

“I just tell him to continue to be himself,” Mahomes said of Kelce. “We’ve seen Travis do that many times and get all those extra yards — those are hard-fought yards in this league. Obviously, they made a good play, they stripped the ball out right at the very end there.

“But I’m taking Travis fighting for extra yards every single time because that’s the type of competitor he is.”

The Chiefs are 9-3 with a fairly soft schedule the rest of the way, though they do have the Seahawks at home in Week 16. If Kansas City plays at its usual level, the conference’s No. 1 seed could still be in the cards.

  1. At critical situations and all the other times too. KC came to work like it was a Monday, Cinci came in like it was Friday and the party was about to start. Low energy vs guys that are ready to roll. Pat, Kelce, Jones, Clark all performed well below expectations and ability. If your super stars can’t get up for a game, then the other guys won’t do it either.

Good on Cinci for showing up!

  2. Let’s not act like Cincy played a perfect game, Patrick. If we take the chip shot field goal early, and Boyd catches a ball he catches 99/100 times, it’s not a close game at the end.

  3. As a Bills fan, we have huge respect for Joe Burrow. The dude’s throws are always always money.
Definitely in the very small group of the games best QBs.
    Looking forward to our matchup..

  4. If KC doesn’t get flagged for a PI call and a cheap roughing the passer call, and Kelce doesn’t fumble and Butker makes a field goal and the right Tackle actually tries to block and the DB’s try to tackle…. It’s not a close game at the end. Cinci beat KC, you can’t play the if my team plays perfect game.

  5. Kelce’s 12th career fumble in 9 seasons. Gronk has 5 in 11. Just saying. When you touch the ball with that frequency you have to protect it.

    3-0

  7. How you can watch those teams play and think Mahomes is in Joe Burrow’s class is beyond me. Gotta keep pumping up that face of the league i guess. One is calm and cool and stays all business while the other is goofy and looks like a teenager on the sidelines when the going gets tough. I love Kelce but look at his body language yesterday, didnt look like he normally does. No way KC comes out of the AFC, next time itll be worse.

  8. KC fan here and To all the fans claiming KC is over-rated and Mahomes is over-rated, you might think about the fact that you barely beat this fraudelent, over-rated team in a one possession game at home that easily could have gone the other way if Kelce doesn’t fumble. So, stay humble before the football gods b/c Mahomes might still make you pay for doubting him

  9. The Chiefs skilled players outside of TE Kelce is garbage the GM should be fired for his awful drafting.
