It’s not looking like Jimmy Garoppolo will play again this year

On Tuesday, ESPN.com pushed the notion (likely planted by agent Don Yee) that 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could be back on the field in as soon as seven weeks.

On Wednesday, coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear that Garoppolo won’t be playing in seven weeks.

“At best-case scenario, not to play football, seven-to-eight weeks, but to heal,” Shanahan told reporters when asked about the ESPN.com report.

The divisional round happens in six weeks and three or four days, depending on when the 49ers’ game would be scheduled — if they qualify. The conference championship happens in seven weeks and four days.

It seems as if the soonest Garoppolo would be able to play is the Super Bowl.

So if rookie quarterback Brock Purdy gets the 49ers to the Super Bowl, would the 49ers bench him for Garoppolo, when Garoppolo will have last played 10 weeks earlier?

Our guess? If Purdy wins enough games to get the 49ers to the Super Bowl, it will be Purdy and not Garoppolo playing in the game.

  1. Well that’s not germane.

The Niners don’t need Jimmy Glass.

They have Purdy. He’s the best QB ever in history who those who barely had a winning record in the B12 and were barely picked in the draft.

  2. Clara making the Super Bowl? That’s optimistic. The San Francisco 49er’s of Santa Clara will be lucky to be a wild card.

  3. Play again for Clara? Why would he? He should start rehabbing on the second field where they stuck him before Lance crashed and burned with two middle fingers up at all times and get ready for his next team. The San Francisco 49er’s of Santa Clara are getting a big spoon full of karma.

  4. Mike I wouldn’t purchase Bills- 49ers Super Bowl tickets. I would purchase Chiefs- Cowboys tickets. As coach Barry Switzer would say Super Bowl bound baby!

  5. Do you seriously believe Shanny would allow int. Jimmy G. To play in yet another Super Bowl? I think not.

Before he was injured, Jimmy was on a five game streak where he went without a key interception. That’s virtually unheard of career-wise for him. He’s long overdue.

Kyle has a catalog of key game mistakes he’s made over the years that have led to him losing Super Bowls — as well as key playoff games. Why would he want Jimmy having any chance at all of being the reason he blew it all yet again?

Shanny is dumb, but he ain’t stupid.

  6. I don’t see Jimmy G coming back this season. The 9ers can only bring back 2 more players from IR this season, 3 players are eligible to return. Those players are Elijah Mitchell, Hassan Ridgeway and Javon Kinlaw. 9ers got Arik back already and looking to get Kinlaw back so Ridgeway might be expendable. I’d imagine they would like Elijah back if the make the playoffs, making him the 2nd and final candidate who can return.

  7. Just stop it. The 49ers are done and not going anywhere. Even with Jimmy G the glass, they’re not going to go far.

  8. Notice that all the speculation on who goes to the Super Bowl defaults to the 49ers, Bengals, Dallas, Buffalo, Kansas City and even the Bucs. No one speculates about the Eagles going, which is how I like it. Even our fans are waiting for the other show to drop.

  9. Well that’s not germane. The Niners don’t need Jimmy Glass. They have Purdy. He’s the best QB ever in history of those who barely had a winning record in the B12 and were barely picked in the draft.

  10. All these people out here acting like that injury happened because Jimmy G is injury prone and not just because the human body is not meant to bend that way and any player’s foot would have broken in those circumstances is sad. Whatever his injury history says, it has nothing to do with this injury.

Anyway, if Purdy takes them to the Super Bowl, I can’t imagine them benching him, but also I am 100% sure that they’d rather have Jimmy G on the bench in case Purdy gets hurt than any of the realistic alternatives.
