Baker Mayfield in line to start, John Wolford likely out this week

Given the way that last Thursday night’s game against the Raiders ended, there probably wasn’t a great need for the Rams to officially name Baker Mayfield their quarterback moving forward and there’s even less of one given the health of John Wolford.

Wolford has been dealing with a neck injury for several weeks and head coach Sean McVay said that he will likely miss Monday night’s game against the Packers because of the injury. That leaves Mayfield in line to make his first start for the team.

Mayfield replaced Wolford after three snaps last Thursday and led a pair of fourth quarter touchdown drives to lift the Rams to a 17-16 win.

The game came two days after Mayfield joined the team as a waiver claim, so he’ll have considerably more time to soak up the offense before getting back on the field against Green Bay.

  1. Baker was great for one drive this season and the worst QB in the NFL for the rest of them. I’m going go out on limb and say he is still awful. Crazy how low the expectations are for a number 1 overall pick.

  2. Everyone keeps saying Mayfield will have time and more prep, insisting that he will be even better. The defense knows he’s playing and will be prepared this time. The only other logic is that Baker Mayfield becomes one of the best QB’s in the NFL because the Lions get there first round pick!

  3. “…..so he’ll have considerably more time to soak up the offense before getting back on the field against Green Bay.”

No soaking possible on a frozen field….that may not look like a field of grass, given snow may be the mask atop it.

I hope LA wins, though…better draft picks for GB.

  4. Everybody seems to be an All-Pro when playing against the Packers this year. How did that happen? Is it coaching? Is the answer really that simple?

  5. Flew across the country in 2 days to play and win. That’s worth something. Plus Carolina is not the same team as the Rams. Can’t compare the QB play at all. Joe Cool(pick one) would suffer on both these squads.

  6. This will be a more exciting game than people expect. Aaron Rodgers is still Aaron Rodgers. Mayfield is playing for his career. If he can’t get anything done with the Rams he’ll be a back up QB until he retires.

I like the Rams to win this. Even with starters out for the game (and the season), the defense is still good. Having said that, with the number of bench players the Rams will have out on the field the rest of their season is a preseason for next year.
