Roquan Smith: Ryan Poles told me the Bears would build around me, not trade me

Bears General Manager Ryan Poles traded linebacker Roquan Smith to the Ravens just before the trade deadline, and Smith says Poles was going back on his word.

Smith told TheAthletic.com that Poles told him repeatedly that his future was in Chicago and that they would work out a long-term contract extension.

“I thought Poles would ship me out, but he told me numerous times, ‘I don’t plan to trade you at all,’” Smith said. “So I was like, ‘I guess I won’t be going anywhere.’ He said we’d talk at the end of the season.”

Smith says that shortly after Poles was hired as the Bears’ General Manager early this year, Poles sat down with Smith and told him the Bears’ plan was to build the offense around Justin Fields and the defense around Smith, and that Smith would be getting a “top of the market” contract for off-ball linebackers.

“I took him at his word,” Smith said. “But life happens.”

Smith says the contract Poles ended up offering him was tantamount to “a slap in the face.” Smith becomes an unrestricted free agent in March, when he’ll have the opportunity to see how much more other teams are willing to offer than the Bears were.

  1. Sometimes talent isn’t worth the price. Roquan, that’s why you got traded.

  2. LB Roquan Smith is good, but not LBs Dick Butkus,Mike Singletary,Otis Wilson and Brian Urlacher good.

  3. As a Bears fan this was a hurtful trade as this guy is a beast at the LB position. I just hope they utilize the draft stock they got for him to help build up the team vs making awful picks that do nothing and this trade would have been for naught.

  4. Very good linebacker. A little slow for wanting top of the market contact. Also has had multiple “non-football” related absences from the team over the years. Buyer beware.

  5. Bad look for Poles. Smith has done nothing since arriving in Baltimore. He got an obilgatory sack vs awful Pitt, but the eye test not looking so great so far.

  6. Forward all complaints to Saint Omni.

Sat out rookie year, throwback game, most of training camp. Demanded top level pay of a new coach/GM and scheme.

My guess is an agent would have helped navigate these challenges. That is of course at the price of 3%.

  7. More proof he needs to hire an agent. Openly complaining about an NFL GM is not going to help him in his quest to get a giant deal from another NFL GM.

ROTFLMAO. Roquan’s presence on the field has done EVERYTHING since he got here. The Ravens are one of the top defenses in the league right now.

  9. Good luck signing this guy Baltimore, you’re gonna need it. As a Bears fan, I hated to see Smith the player go but it seemed he was never satisfied. Last in his draft class to sign, supposedly top dollar offer to sign long term – I realize we don’t know the details so spare me ‘the Bears are cheap’ commentary. Seems like he had a few off the field incidents too. A lot of drama for one player, I hope Poles actually has the ability to judge talent and uses the draft picks and cap space next year wisely.

  10. Poles did you right….he did not want to pay overvalue for an off the ball linebacker, so he traded you. You were impossible to negotiate with, so he traded you. He did not want to tag you for multiple reasons, so he traded you. Your contract was up and you would be a free agent, so he traded you. Poles was smart!

  11. I think the Ravens are going to have trouble signing Smith. He’s been a good addition and has helped a lot in 2022. But I’m a bit surprised the Ravens gave up as much as they did (a 2 and a 5 in 2023) to rent him for a few months.

  12. Held out his rookie camp due to some clause re: illegal hits.
Missed a game vs. the Vikings due to personal reasons.
Held out this year’s camp due to wanting an extension.
Penned a letter to the world via Rapoport that he wants a trade.
Finally shows up to camp after Poles held the line.
Gets the trade he wanted and now bad mouths Poles because of it.
    Still has no agent.

This kids, is how NOT to do it.

  13. Poles and the Bears brass have literally no idea what they are doing. If you think things are bad now… just wait another year or 2. Yeeeesh.

I doubt the Ravens gave that much up, to NOT sign him. He knows how much they’ve already given up. And B-More is a great home for defensive players.

Hardly “one of the best”. Regardless, they should be seeing as they play in one of the weakest divisions in football.

  16. What Poles told him is that you want to be paid like the best linebacker in the league you have to play like the best. But, you started to act like a little cry-baby thinking you are the best. Wrong! Roquan never liked being a Bear . All he was worried about was money.

  17. A lot of trashing the guy for simply speaking the truth. He wasn’t commenting on the organization, the players or you fans, just the GM.

  18. Not sure how the subject of his dealings with the Bears management came up now that he is part of the Ravens organization but he shouldn’t be talking about it at all. The only correct answer to any question about that – if it was even asked – is ‘I’m not going to talk about what happened in Chicago, it’s water under the bridge. I’m a Raven now so I’m just looking forward from here’. He sounds like a whiny teenage girl who didn’t get asked to the dance. You asked to be traded before camp and you got your wish, move on. We Bears fans have.

  19. Roquan can’t blame anyone but himself. Beside he was bong water anyway, his skills was on the decline and a 3-4 backer that really didn’t fit the scheme, and was getting beaten soundly a lot.

He went from a historically bad organization that’s going nowhere to a Historically good organization that may win the superbowl and he will be an unrestricted free agent in the off- season, hit the open market and will probably be the highest paid player at his position if he so chooses all without an agent. Sounds like he did it exactly right. What are talking about?

Ravens winning the Super Bowl. Now there’s a pipe dream!
