Snowfall rates as high as 2 inches per hour could hit Buffalo during Dolphins-Bills game

Tonight’s Dolphins-Bills game could be among the snowiest in NFL history.

According to the Buffalo News, the latest forecast calls for heavy snow Saturday evening in the most impacted areas, which are near Lake Erie south of Buffalo, with snowfall rates as high as 2 inches per hour possible. Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park is south of Buffalo and about five miles from Lake Erie.

Tonight’s game kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET. The snow has already started falling and is expected to accumulate throughout the day today.

It’s still possible that the NFL could opt to delay the game, although delaying it would impact the Bills’ and Dolphins’ preparations for next week’s games, giving them a competitive disadvantage at a time when both teams are in the thick of the AFC playoff picture. The NFL would surely see delaying the game as a last resort. And there’s certainly no time to move the game to another location, as the NFL did in November when a Buffalo blizzard moved a Bills home game to Detroit.

So the most likely result is that the NFL will play the game as scheduled, urge fans to exercise extreme caution on the roads to and from the stadium, and give millions of fans around the country the pleasure of watching a snow game from the comfort of home.

  1. The Buffalo Bills sideline will be 100 degrees colder than the sideline they got roasted on in Miami, while Miami enjoyed the shade and 30 degree cooler temps.

  2. Let them play. Battling the elements has always been a part of the game before domed stadiums showed up.

  3. I know the rest of the country freaks out at even a thought of a flurry in the forecast. Bread & milk disappear from the shelves and the national guard is called.
But this is Buffalo. We are well prepared. This is a city where every single bar is open & packed during a blizzard. Aittle snow will not stop anyone from going to this game.

  4. That stadium is a few miles from ski country so the Bills dbl down and build the new one across the street. Good going

  5. Have a perfect snowver situation. Public will bet the under up into game time bringing the number down and the over will hit. Snow games like this usually hit the over despite the common public opinion.

  6. I’m old enough to remember when the Dolphins didn’t have the field at the Orange Bowl covered during a monsoon that preceded (and continued through) the ’82 AFC Championship game vs the Jets. The Dolphins won 14-0 in a slop fest, and their fans crowed about the field conditions being critical in slowing down the Jets.

I hope it snows three feet during the game tonite…

  7. It won’t be long before the NFL mandates dome stadia for all teams, and likely participation banners as well.

  8. Sweet sweet Karma for the Dolphins rigging their sideline at Hard Rock to be 30 degrees cooler than the away sideline

  9. “Everything is going to be okay until someone pelts Santa with snowballs.”

    That only happens in Philly!

Good point here. Snow games affect the defense tremendously. Can’t fly around and catch the offense as easy.
Love snow games. As a chiefs fan people were at first questioning if Mahomes could handle a cold snow/blizzard game. He and Hill lit the other team up. Have played well in snow storms since. Which hopefully pays off when we potentially have to travel to buffalo in the playoffs.

  11. That Colts Bills snow game a few years ago was fun to watch. Let’s see another one of those!

  12. Heavy snow helps the Dolphins. Bills don’t practice in full pads in the snow during the week in December and January so nobody is acclimated to it. If it was just cold and windy, they would have a big advantage because you can get a good amount of work in those conditions. Whoever makes the least amount of mistakes wins this one.

  13. when the Dolphins sideline heaters mysteriously lose power between 8-11 pm, I will laugh my a– off

  14. They could have 12 feet of snow and it won’t be moved. Bills weather complainers want payback for Miami

  15. Bills fans are little overconfident in this one… what makes you believe their roster has all this snow bowl experience? These young men are all from the same parts of the country and have heated seats in their in SUV’s. Calm down. Same cleats. Same gear. Same field. It’s about execution and lucky breaks.

If anything it’s going to be a low scoring game and Tyreek Hill could be wide open ALL night.

    Go Dolphins.

  16. The Dolphins offense can’t play any worse than last week in perfect conditions, snow is not the main concern.

And the season ended in November back in the day and there weren’t any playoffs extending the season.

I’ve played football in the snow (nose tackle back in the day). It sucks. It takes most of the skill out of the game. Cold I don’t mind, but snow sucks. Did I say that snow sucks (when playing football)?

If you like sloppy football, I guess being a fan of snow games is great.

Having said all that, I love snow. Of course I’ve been skiing for 60+ years.

  18. Forget the over/under. I’m putting my money on Jake from State Farm’s double discount insurance on Dorsey’s laptop.

Yes, that the game Shula INSTRUCTED field crews to leave the tarps off of the field to literally tilt the field in his teams favor. Slippery slope there, as many would call that cheating. Shula never won a SB with Dan Marino – that era’s Tom Brady/ Peyton Manning all rolled into one. Shula is and always has been overrated.

  20. You people are weird. It’s like you don’t understand football. It’s hot in Miami. Players from both teams were laying on the field that day not just the bills. Does the sun move across the stadium as the game goes on and hit the visiting side more? Sure! But it’s hot and f’n sunny for everyone. Just like it will be cold and snowy in Buffalo tonight. And that makes the game tough for both teams not just the team from Miami.

Obviously you don’t remember that it was raining during the game , there was no way to protect the field during the game while it was raining. And another thing the Dolphins had beat the Jets twice that year. The Dolphins were a better team. They were going to win that game.
Finally until Belichick, Shula had appeared more Super Bowls than any other coach. He’s the winningest coach in NFL history that’s not overrated. Get your facts straight.

The last time, the Miami Dolphins played the Bill in a heavy snow game in Buffalo, the Dolphins won.
In a heavy snow game like this, talent goes out the door. Luck and mental determination will decide the outcome of this game

Ironically, I’ve never seen a fan base cry about weather more than the Bills fans have about the game in Miami.

  24. I never want to hear buffalo complain about the heat in miami ever again, your not going to even have a game plan in this blizzard it’s just going to be slogging it out in the center of the field and punts galore….
Buffalo put a dome on your stadium…..

  25. Unbelievable how people are flipping out about this. Football has been played in bad weather many, many times in the past. The hysteria over this is ridiculous.

Exactly, they had no problem with weather when they beat them 7 games in a row, now all of a sudden its such a huge problem.

If the Dolphins sideline heaters mysteriously lose power, the Bills will have to turn theirs off per league rules.

To be fair, I did say that the monsoon continued through the game. The point I was trying to make was really about the fanbase (in this case the Dolphins) being a bit, shall we say, overexuberant about the weather, and thus that karma is a ……. I also remember the controversy about Shula, but that can work both ways (as he found out against NE in the snowplow game).

I do want to see three feet of snow however, and if Miami finds a way to win in that, then I tip my hat and move on

  29. Just a friendly reminder that the Buffalo Bills have never won a SB and sure won’t this season!

You sure about that one, Morty? They’re the #1 seed in the stronger conference. Naturally, it’s not a guarantee – but surely they have a shot this year.

Has Miami won a SB? Oh, yeah…that was back around the time of Watergate, right?

  31. No a problem, according to the Bills fans it only snows on Tua, so all else should be fine.

  32. The Dolphins should be in the AFC South. Swap them for the Colts and restore an old AFC East rivalry and level out the weather aspect of these games and make it more fair.

It was earlier than that. As I recall, they had the weakest schedule of any Super Bowl team in history. I think the opponents had a winning percentage of .385, and they played a .500 team in the Super Bowl (Washington). That was after Dirty Don Shula, the Original Cheater, made secret plans to leave Baltimore and coach Miami. It cost Miami a first round draft pick for Tampering Charges. That guy couldn’t win a Super Bowl with the best pure passer ever, Dan Marino, and he had him for 17 years! That was likely before Morty was born, so he is in no better shape regarding Lombardi’s than Bills fans. It’s less painful because Miami has not sniffed the Super Bowl in eons, whereas Buffalo has….well….you know. Anyway, the wheels on the Miami bandwagon are wobbling. Never say never but I am doubting Miami will win the game. They did good with the harder part of their schedule early in the season, so they have margin, but they may be fighting for their playoff lives come that final game vs the NYJ’s in Mia.

  34. Snow doesn’t affect the game nearly as much as the low temps and the wind. The temperature at the game is expected to hover around 32F,which isn’t that cold.
I expect a high scoring game as long as the wind doesn’t kick up.

  35. Can you just imagine what will happen in Buffalo if the Dolphins win this game? I for one will laugh and laugh…….

    ____________

It is not about the game on the field. Rather, it is about people being able to get to and from the game and the resources diverted to game day activities that could be better used elsewhere.

Washington was 11-3 and had the best record in the NFC in 1972.
