Matt LaFleur on kneeldown at 1-yard line: “There’s a way you handle winning in this league”

Leading 24-12 with 1:39 left, the Packers had first-and-goal at the Rams’ 1-yard line on Monday night, and they decided to kneel down three times to end the game, rather than score another touchdown. Packers coach Matt LaFleur said that’s what he’ll always do in that situation.

“I didn’t think about that. I just think there’s a way you handle winning in this league. I’ve got a lot of respect for those guys we’re competing against,” LaFleur said.

It was pointed out to LaFleur that point differential is one of the playoff tiebreakers, but LaFleur responded that playoff tiebreakers aren’t something he thinks about during a game. He also said he wasn’t bothered by the Rams using their timeouts late in the game even as there was virtually no chance of them winning.

“If I knew that was going to be the difference, certainly, you do what you’ve got to do, but I think there’s karma involved in that, and I don’t want to be about that, and I’ve got too much respect for them,” LaFleur said. “I’m not worried about that.”

The people who were worried about it were those who bet the point total on Monday night’s game: The over/under was 39.5 points, meaning the under hit, but the over would have hit if the Packers had scored another touchdown.

  1. This situation im fine with the kneel downs, scoring another touchdown would do nothing but force their defense to play a few more snaps.
I have a problem with all the teams that are tied or up a few who are scared to score for fear their d is hot garbage and they will lose.

  2. I have no problem with coachs’ decision. I don’t care about the feelings of those who bet on the game..lol

  3. Guys can also get hurt in meaningless (except for those with bets) plays at ends of games. You get a chance to run three plays without getting anyone hurt and game is already over, take it.

  4. Call it class or call it ignorance… To hell with the bettors, but point differential is the tie breaker that will matter between them and Detroit since if they end the season in a tie for the last NFC Wild card they will also have the North record, same Conference record, same record against similar opponents. The tiebreaker will be point differential… So I’m leaning towards ignorance…

  5. Gambling on football will always take place. But the league should not be endorsing it. In fact they should be totally against it to protect the veracity of the game. Is it a coincidence that the same year the officiating has become so bad the NFL is pushing gambling. Not a good look.

  6. Betting on sports. A fools’ errand. Include me out. Coach LaFleur’s job is to win the game. Not to satisfy the bettors. Aaron Rogers saw it the same way.

  7. Point differential is so far down the list of tiebreakers that Id be surprised if it was ever used. Before it’s used, two teams would need to have the exact same opponent winning percentage overall and the exact same opponent win percentage in their wins which … yeah, this reporter was actually asking about betting and fantasy.

  8. Interesting move. Thinking no other NFL coach would have done that but McVay is a very good friend of MLF. Probably won’t make any difference for the playoffs but wouldn’t that be something if it came down to point differential as the determining factor? Respectful move but was it prudent and in the best interest for his Packer team?

  9. Coach Eberflus did that against the Patriots when they could’ve gotten a TD and bellichek reciprocated by doing the same to end the game. Its rare to see such good sportsmanship but nice to see once and awhile…….

  10. The last thing we want is for coaches to act in the best interest of the gamblers. Good on him for doing the right thing.

  11. I’m sure the conspiracy theorists will claim he had money on the under. And if he had tried to score, they would claim he had money on the over.

    Conspiracists gonna theorize.

  12. You want to say it’s professional sports, score the TD, BUT even if there’s only a .00001 chance you fumble the handoff and it gets returned for a TD and then an onside kick is recovered and another TD gets scored to beat you, you take the knee and the win 100 percent of the time.

  13. That always sounds nice and decent until you realize that the player being prevented from attempting to score, no doubt has a clause in his contract that increases his paycheck based on the number of touchdowns/scores he attains in a season and if his ‘coach’ orders him not to score, that same ‘coach’ is (no way in hell) going to the general manager when the player is up for a renewed contract and take the hit for ‘player’ being one touchdown short of meeting that particular requirement, therefore costing that player a considerable amount of money at no cost to ‘coach’ “participation trophy”. nah, it’s not ‘class’ and frankly anybody who believes this “good sportsman” baloney actually has – in my opinion – no respect for his opponent’s spirit of competition or his own defense to do their job; stop the other team from scoring. just a thought, but a costly one is that “minor” detail is in your contract (or future contract)

  14. My team has been on both sides of this equation this year: A game-ending kneel down inside the 5-yard line…and having an opponent kneel at the goal line as the outcome was already decided.

I don’t recall anyone whining about either situation after the fact.

If LaFleur’s decision ruined anyone’s FF playoffs or hosed a few people who had money on the game…. sorry, sucks to be you. As the coach, LaFleur’s singular focus is on securing the win; fantasy football and Vegas bettors are the furthest thing from his mind.

For anyone who’s disappointed or upset…maybe next time try putting your time and money into an endeavor where people make decisions with your best interests ar heart. Because NFL coaches don’t care and don’t want to hear it.

  15. You don’t see a lot of that anymore. Everywhere you look today in youth football, high school, NCAA, people are trying to run up the score relentlessly, leaving their starters in during blowouts and airing it out. It’s refreshing to see some class and sportsmanship occasionally…

  16. Reduces the risk of injury. I’d hate to see any player go down to injury when there is no need. Regardless if it’s “classy” or not.

That is why this so interesting… If the Packers win out and Detroits only loss is to the packers they will have the same divisional record, same conference record and same winning percentage from similar opponents. It’s rare but will happen with the above scenario

  18. It would have been a spit in the Rams face if they went and scored a meaningless TD at the end of the game and run up the score plus it would have led to the Rams having a long memory and seek revenge in future meetings between the two teams plus it may have ended a long close friendship between the two head coaches.a class act by MLF.

Harbaugh would have tried to score and then gone for 2!
    .
    .
Harbaugh is a K-Mart version of Woody Hayes.

  20. #1 Objective: Win the game
#2 Objective: Get out as healthy as possible.

    Objective 1 & 2 acheived. That’s good coaching

Damn objectives, could have used a Watson TD.

  21. Remember, class is also a product of having more World Championships than any other team in the league. We know how to act when we are on top.

It’s all part of better football…….

    …….for better people.

They didn’t beat the same teams so strength of victory will settle that. And if it doesn’t then strength of schedule would. So no this isn’t going to point differential.

  23. Weird to see people talking up LaFleur in this thread when many are the same “fans” that were calling for his head 6 weeks ago.

  24. If you’re relying on GB or LA teams to win your FF game you already have bigger problems and should quit whining.

  25. There was no reason to run up the score in the waning seconds,… not too mention LaFleur is a McVay disciple. Sports gambling doesn’t control the game.

  26. Non-story. I really wanted GB to put up 30 but when the rook didn’t get Rodgers’ hand signal, MLF ended the game as he should have. Nothing to see here.

  27. Point differential has only been used one time in the history of the NFL. (Packers, Panthers 1998) Is is a rule? Yes. Rarely comes into play. Class act coach.

  28. Since the game was decided it was the class thing to do. Imagine if it was reversed and the Rams pushed in the score then celebrated. Things like that are not forgotten easily.

That, plus both head coaches are friends.

  29. There’s also the fact it was cold as heck and kneeling down got everyone to the lockerrooms a couple minutes faster. Not a GB fan but I have no problem with the coach’s decision.

  30. NFL needs to address the end of the WAS/NYG game as opposed to a coach taking a knee and not ‘running up the score’.

Was/NYG was horribly officiated at the end while GB simply chose to run out the clock.

  31. you can’t say betting doesn’t count because if it wasn’t for betting the NFL wouldn’t even
exist. People love to watch football, however when you bet or play fantasy football it adds a whole new element to the game.
This should be considered just like throwing a game as the coach decided who got paid. Maybe he had a huge bet on the under. If the defense doesn’t want you to score then maybe they should play a little better.

  32. It was my idea to take the kneel down, not Matts. I didn’t want to injure my thumb or pinky toe again. Just don’t tell anyone. I’d rather they all think I’m classy 😉

    ——-

He would. And everyone would hate him for it.

But when Burrow did it to the Ravens last year, and was unapologetic, everyone responded by saying “love that kid’s swagger!!!”

  34. Packer fan here they don’t belong in the playoffs no matter what especially if they get in by pt. differential.

I like HC’s that that coach their players not to lateral after an interception
    _____________

Perhaps you missed Coach LaFleur pointing to his head after Rasul’s lateral. LaFleur is not responsible for Rasul’s momentary lack of judgement.

  36. Brady and Belichick not only go for the td. They play action to Gronk on the two point conversion.

  37. Why score with 1:39 when that just means your special teams and defense would have to be on the field to defend another drive? Let them start their rest for next week and enjoy watching the offense end the game right there.

  38. I had the under but if I would have bet the over I would have been ok with it to it’d sportsmanship

    ————————

To add to what bjwbrown2011 said, first tie breaker is actually head-to-head–
If GB loses any games, they’re out.
If they beat Detroit, they have any tiebreaker.
Washington and NYG beat GB, so they have any tiebreaker.
Seattle’s schedule hasn’t been as strong, so GB has any tiebreaker there.

    Not going to point differential.

  40. It’s unfortunate that so many plays, refs calls or non-calls, etc. are now being processed through the filter of point spreads and over/under. But the league jumped the shark with the whole gambling thing, so here we are.

    – – – – – – – – – –
Had Watson been paying attention and seen Rodgers’ hand signal, he would have had one.

  42. Gambling on games has existed since the NFL began. It is widely acknowledged that gambling has always been one the main drivers of the league’s popularity. The NFL finally acknowledging gambling’s existence changes nothing. In fact, it was hypocritical for the NFL to pretend that gambling did not exist.

    Like bragging?

  44. Who cares about the over/under…could’ve ruined a players holiday season with an unnecessary injury

  45. This reminds me of a game a number of years back when the Cowboys were playing the Eagles. The Eagles RB, I can’t remember his name, ran through a huge whole during the last minute or so of the game and was basically all alone running for a large number yards. When he was about to cross the goal line, he laid down at the 2 yard line and stayed there. Basically, it was that the Eagles didn’t want to give the Cowboys too much time so they could come back and score. ANYWAY, this messed up the fantasy football for a guy I knew. He didn’t like it as I am sure many others didn’t as well. In a word, that’s just a big boo hoo.

  46. I don’t have any interest in it in the gambling perspective nor the tiebreaker. And I understand wanting to extend respect to the other team. Having said that there are plenty of players on the Packers that would have loved to have one more TD on their resume. Mercedes Lewis, an old vet, journey-men Taylor, Bobby Tonyan, coming off an ACL, the rookie Doubs.. These guys are proud paid professionals whose job it is to score. MLF should have considered his players feelings.. not those of his beer-drinking, back-slapping buddy on the other side. The Packer’s offense has struggled all year.. It’s not running up the score, doing your job. In any event, it’s the defense’s job to stop you in the first place, not get it gifted. And then the Rams called time out anyway which was really bush. So it goes both ways.
