Doug Pederson: Jaguars’ starters will play this week because there is never a meaningless game

The AFC South will go to the winner of the Week 18 game between the Jaguars and Titans, which has led to some suggestions that those teams should rest their starters in Week 17 and make sure they’re healthy and fresh for the division championship game. But Jaguars coach Doug Pederson doesn’t buy it.

Pederson said this morning that the Jaguars’ starters will play on Sunday against the Texans and that he believes there’s always value in playing to win.

“There is never a meaningless game,” Pederson said.

Those words are surprising coming from Pederson, who in his final game as head coach of the Eagles infamously benched quarterback Jalen Hurts for Nate Sudfeld. Pederson sure treated that game like he thought it was meaningless.

And Pederson also rested his starters for the final game of the 2017 season, when the Eagles had already clinched home-field advantage in the playoffs. He treated that game as if it was meaningless as well.

But this week, Pederson says it means something to him to win. And so he’s willing to risk injuries in a game that doesn’t mean anything in the AFC South race.

  1. Very different situation here. The previous ones they where in the playoffs or where tanking, here they are in the middle of a push to make the playoffs for the 1st time in a long time. I wouldn’t let up either.

  2. Philly situation is completely different. The Eagles were a winning org at that point, the Jags have been floundering for 20 years and are trying to establish that culture Andy Reid did before Pederson took over.

  3. I forgot Pederson was the coach who intentionally lost the last game of the season with the Eagles. That’s the old competitive spirit!

  4. Eagles fan here – I’m glad to see Doug having success in Jacksonville. He’s a good coach and we’ll always love him for bringing home the team’s first Super Bowl trophy.

  5. Benching Hurts was clearly an organizational (Roseman/Lurie) decision, not a coaching decision. That really doesn’t even relate to this situation. Like someone else already mentioned in their comment, the Jags are trying to build a winning culture. For that reason alone, I agree with Doug’s decision.

  6. The decision to bench Hurts strongly contributed to his firing in Philly, so it should not be a surprise that he learned his lesson from last time.

  7. You play to win the game and the more wins the better the locker room. Go with the momentum and newly developed confidence. They’re building a winning culture here, first and foremost.

  8. “Benching Hurts was clearly an organizational (Roseman/Lurie) decision, not a coaching decision. That really doesn’t even relate to this situation.”

I came here to say this exact thing.

  9. Pleeeease Doug change your mind. If Houston wins this game, the Bears have a real shot at the number one overall pick.

  10. Michael David Smith is clearly a Giants fan since he’s so salty about the Eagles throwing Pederson’s last game…

  11. Meaningless game to sit starters for the playoffs? I guess you can argue that perspective to stir the pot and make it fit your narrative but I see it more as strategy.

  12. Keep up the momentum, keep up the pressure! We probably aren’t going to stroll into K.C. or Buffalo and beat them(it could happen though) but we need to establish a culture of playing hard every game and give them a taste of what’s to come next season.

  13. No matter what he actually believes, or has acted on in the past, he said what he needed to THIS year for THIS team. The Jags are hot right now and do not need to take their foot off the gas.
