Jaire Alexander on backing up his talk vs. Justin Jefferson: I’m a great corner

Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson entered Sunday with a league-leading 1,756 receiving yards, putting him 208 behind the NFL-record 1,964 yards Calvin Johnson had in 2012. Jefferson ended Sunday with 1,771 yards, leaving him 193 behind Johnson heading into the final week.

It was quite a turnaround for the Packers, who allowed Jefferson to catch nine passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns in the Vikings’ 23-7 win in the season opener.

This time, Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander traveled with Jefferson most of the day.

He challenged him,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said, via Andrew Krammer of the Star Tribune. “There were a couple times he implemented some quick jams where he was very physical at the line of scrimmage. Anytime DBs do that, you’re not always expecting it, especially if you haven’t seen it a ton on tape. I don’t care who you are as a wide receiver; it’s always a challenge. I thought that was a great job by our staff.”

Kirk Cousins targeted Jefferson five times, and his only catch came with 7:45 remaining in the third quarter. It was a career low in catches, and the 15 yards nearly were a career low in receiving yards. Jefferson wore his frustration on his sleeve as Alexander chirped in his ear and mocked him with the Griddy celebration.

Alexander lined up across from Jefferson on 20 of 31 routes, 13 of which came in press coverage, per Next Gen Stats.

“Tell Shannon Sharpe and Skip Bayless to watch what they say about me,” Alexander said. “Talking about how ‘he a good corner.’ I’m a great corner.”

Earlier this week, Alexander called Jefferson’s season-opening stats against the Packers a “fluke.” LaFleur noted Alexander “backed it up” Sunday.

“He’s still a great receiver,” Alexander told Tracy Wolfson of CBS. “But I’m confident in myself, and I said what I said, and I meant what I said.”

  1. Jefferson is soft and still has a lot to learn. Jaire isn’t as good as he thinks he is.

  2. See what happens when you use your players the right way? (Looking at you, Joe Barry)

  3. The only thing better than trash talking before and backing it up during the game is to omit the trash talking before.
Alexander played great, but football is a team game and the Packers are by far the better team.

  4. Good game Jaire. Would welcome another shot at y’all. At any rate, you’re going to have to do it again. Lose and you’ll get a whole bunch of time to keep running at the mouth.

  5. When Jaire spoke after the game were there subtitles or someone interpreting what he was saying because whenever I hear him talk I can’t understand a single word he says. Also while he’s patting himself on the back all week long, the Lions will torch him next week.

  6. The part the media left out of Alexanders locker room rant was when he said Jefferson was a top 3 receiver and ranked him right with D. Adams. He backed up his talk but who knows when they meet the next time.

  7. He talked a lot. And he completely backed it up. And clearly got under Jefferson’s skin.

  8. Again 3 of JJ’s worst 6 games – yardage-wise at least – occurred while playing Green Bay. Round 6 went to Alexander in a knockout. He won’t surprise JJ again, that much I’m sure.

  9. Allen Lazard received a hefty fine for counting up the bowling pins he knocked over in the Miami game. Will Jefferson be fined for striking an official??

  10. Give me Tyreek Hill over Justin Jefferson every single day of the week. Been sayin that. JJ is top 5, but he’s 5. Give me Hill, Kupp, Chase and Adams.

Should’ve warranted an immediate ejection, but it’s the Vikings…..and well, you know the rest.

  12. As far as I’m concerned, if Jefferson can’t surpass Johnson in 16 games, he has failed to break Johnson’s record.

  13. Say what you want about Jaire – Im not a fan of that kind of pre-game trash talk but he 100% backed it up. He dominated him physically and crushed him emotionally. Jefferson himself clearly needed to come down to earth. If he processes it the right way, he’ll be a better receiver for the experience – which is a little scary.

  14. Remember when Rodgers/Packers said that he would play until the Packers were mathematically eliminated and people clowned him for not resting? Looks like he was right

  15. He played a great game….Of course Kirk turning into a pumpkin did Jefferson no favors…

  16. Jaire played a great game sunday, props to him but one game doesn’t make a career. Go out and do it consistently for the next 5-7 years, then we can talk about how great he is.

  17. He’s right, as long as he plays with Rodgers the refs will continue to let him hold without penalty. Should have been hit with at least 4 dpi that were shown. Probably more that didn’t make the camera

  18. Cousins stinks ,so he sorta made your day a lot easier Jair….but I gotta admit I love seeing a stud WR getting shut down and then losing his composure. The helmet coming off and scraping the ref was classic!!

  19. Good. Calvin Johnson = MAN. Dude with goofy face, with goofy dance that wears diamonds all over like a little lady = not my kind of dude. Katie also backed up his talk in a major way and some of you are sooooo mad. Man I wish Tampa played Minnesota in the first round. You guys are so weak, so soft. A team I would love to bully around for 3 strong hours.

Jaire Alexander needs to grow up. A lot.
    ******************************************************
    Oh, Really?
Jefferson’s doing the whining, who’s the cry baby here? JJ got owned!

  21. Alexander had safety help over the top and a linebacker underneth on 98% of the plays he had agaimst Jefferson. True shutdown corners who talk as much as him do not need help all the time.

  22. “Alexander’s play was a fluke. /shrug, goes both ways.” If the Packers coaches would have put them in position all season to succeed instead of just this one game the whole defense would have been great.they always played a weak zone which allowed mediocre qbs and recievers to look like hall of famers.

……..and……..he almost hit the ref when he swung his helmet out of stymied frustration!

If Jefferson is “soft and still has a lot to learn,”but leads all NFL receivers in yards this season, what does it say about how soft every single receiver in the NFL is in your eyes?

It’s easy to be good when you have help over top every time.******************************************************************************

No, it isn’t. The league is set up for receivers and QB’s to have big numbers and it’s nearly impossible to play DB in the league. DB’s can’t touch a receiver while receivers push off on many routes. OL holds all the time so the QB doesn’t get hit. When the QB can stand around for 5 seconds and the receiver can push off, it doesn’t matter if you’ve got a guy doubled.

  26. Aaron Rodgers has proven time and again he OWNS the Bears.

Alexander proved he OWNS Jefferson until Jefferson proves him wrong.

Great win, now to face the Lions.

  27. Jaire is trying to be the next Prime Time Sanders. The old coach once told us that your opponent someday will collect his due from all the trash talk. On the other hand, this might be JA collecting on the hot dogging Jefferson did in the earlier game.

  28. Wouldn’t a stud wide receiver get more than one catch? Even with safety and linebacker help?? Isn’t that part of being a top wide receiver???

  29. Alexander had safety help over the top and a linebacker underneth on 98% of the plays he had agaimst Jefferson.
    —–
That’s called defense. Any solid pass defense is going to have safeties over the top and lbs underneath. Kinda how it works. It’s not JA’s fault we rarely blitz or play zero.

  30. If Randy Moss or Stephon Diggs had hit a referee with his helmet after a childish outburst, the sports world would be all over them, but JJ amazingly gets a pass. Times are desperate in Minnesota.

  31. I hope Amon Ra carves him up again next week.

Lions can send the Packers home and I am looking forward to it

  32. Kirk was my perfect fantasy QB yesterday. Played bad enough to lose to the Packers but well enough in garbage time to win my FF championship. The Vikings remind me of the World’s Most Interesting Man. “We don’t often lose, but when we do, we prefer to lose big.”

  33. Had Jefferson had a real QB throwing to him it may have been a little different 🤷‍♂️

  34. Jefferson is soft and still has a lot to learn. Jaire isn’t as good as he thinks he is.
    —–
Never associated JJ and softness. And I don’t think it’s possible for JA to be as good as he thinks he is, but he’s as good as they come.

  35. With his me first antics, over the top dramatics and embarrassing temper tantrums, Jefferson is quickly becoming one of the least likeable young players in the league.
Fitting he finds himself playing for the Vikings organization and their insufferable fan base.

    ___________

He’s already been doing it for four years. You can go ahead and start talking about it.

  37. Alexander owned Jefferson yesterday. It happens and I’m glad it happened because we (Packer fans) needed it.

But it doesn’t diminish Jefferson as a receiver. Not even a little bit. He’s still one of the best in the league, maybe even THE best, or on his way to it.

What, some of you think one bad beat-down is going to break his delicate psyche? He didn’t get where he is with a weak noodle. None of these guys did. He’s had bad games before. He’ll likely have them again (although not many).

  38. I’ve never been a fan of the pre-game chirping in all my 50+ years of playing/following sports, but the kid backed it up and JJ seemed to wither. Fortunately, the Vikings get to move on and JJ can learn another lesson in his young career. I never saw Jerry Rice back down from a CB challenge, and hopefully JJ learns that he needs to raise his game to another level in games like that. Skol!

  39. There will come a point where Alexander’s onfield antics will draw an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and cost GB.

Then the rest of your crap team should have been able to make a play before the score was 41-3…..don’t you think?

  41. As a longtime known Packer fan on here,… it’s been a long time since I’ve seen multiple Lions Smack at the Pack on here.
Bring It !! Bring all you got. But like Minny fans found out,…. they still have to play the game. And they got spanked. You don’t win it or lose it on here.

  42. Can you imagine how good Jefferson could be if he had a QB that was anything above average? Kirk Cousins is the NFC Central’s new Jay Cutler.

  43. >> cheeseisfattening says: When you, yourself, have to stomp and insist you’re great…ya not so much. <<

Exactly. Not sure where JJ gets off doing all of that stompin' and insistin' but … divas will diva.

  44. Jaire didn’t do anything but run his mouth. He had safety help the whole game. Cover JJ one on one then get back to us.

Jefferson didn’t do anything. Maybe you should talk to Cook. Before jefferson was everywhere Viking fans used to love to tell us how good Dalvin was. Where was he?

JJ said at the beginning of the season he was not the best WR in the NFL, but said he would be by the end of the season – get it right for once.

  48. As a Packer fan for over 30 years, I can’t think of a player I have rooted against. Alexander is toeing that line.

    Absolutely obnoxious.

Hopefully someone will shame him into reality.

“It’s just like Michael Jordan and the Detroit Pistons,” Jefferson said, via Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press. “They try to take out the best player.

He said that on December 21st. Jefferson has become a diva. Deal with it.

    Well it won’t be JJ!

  51. “It’s easy to be good when you have help over the top every time” . . . sounds like someone is rehashing the days of playing cornerback in peewee football.
