Kayvon Thibodeaux: I didn’t know Nick Foles was hurt when I was celebrating

USA Today Sports

Giants rookie edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux‘s celebration after Colts quarterback Nick Foles injured his ribs on a second quarter sack drew the ire of Colts center Ryan Kelly after Sunday’s game.

Thibodeaux did snow angels next to Foles while the quarterback writhed in pain on the field and then made a “go to sleep” gesture on the sideline while Foles got medical attention on the field. Foles was ultimately carted off to the locker room and Sam Ehlinger played the rest of the way in a 38-10 Giants win.

Kelly called Thibodeaux’s behavior “horseshit,” but Thibodeaux said he was unaware that Foles was injured.

“When I did realize that he was hurt, that’s when we started getting up,” Thibodeaux said, via Kimberley A. Martin of ESPN. “When you’re doing a celebration, you’re not looking to see who’s doing what. But I hope he gets well and I hope he’s all right.”

Video of the snow angel celebration would seem to support the idea that Thibodeaux was unaware of Foles’ predicament. By the time he was on the sideline, it was clear what was happening, however, and it’s easy to understand why Foles, Kelly and the rest of the Colts would have an issue with Thibodeaux’s second post-injury gesture.

  1. While I agree that maybe he wasn’t aware during the snow angel, he showed his lack of class on the sidelines with the sleeping gesture. He obviously knew of the injury at that point and chose to make jokes about it.

  2. Damage done. He’s a classless punk. Should have acted like you’ve had a sack before. Hope that the whole team that boots the Giants out of the playoffs alldo snow angels for him.

  3. He didnt know – how about that as an answer – he just crushed the guy legally but didnt know that they had really hurt him

  4. Kayvon is a major league dirtbag. His excuse is bogus. That is what kind of man he really is.

  5. Maybe check before you celebrate?

I wish the Colts told him in the moment when they thought of his celebration. They certainly ha the time to do so.

If the league wants to prevent the glorification of concussions et al, it could suspend (not fine) Thibodeaux for his sideline ridiculousness.

Thibodeaux, I’m sure, thought everyone would think he was the man with his choreographed celebration. Instead, everyone just thought he was stupid.

  6. Looks like we got a lot of choir boys in the comments section today. I heard Lawrence Taylor was at the game today – I suppose those same choir boys wouldn’t have a guy like LT on their team either — too classless for their refined sensibilities.

  7. Man people just love to hate on other people. The kid just had a huge sack and it’s obvious that he has no idea Foles is hurt. He did nothing wrong. No player looks around to check for injuries before celebrating a sack. If the Colts didn’t like it then stop giving up sacks. People sure are soft today

  8. I have a very low opinion of Lawrence Taylor as a person, but he was the first guy trying to get medical staff to help Joe Theismann. When you aren’t even as good a person as Lawrence Taylor… you are a real scumbag.

  9. 1) that was a complete punk move. Don’t say he didn’t realize it, he clearly looked at Foles and did a couple more snow angels. I’ll smile the next time Thibodeaux gets hurt.
    2) maybe more of a punk move, not a single teammate of Foles did or said anything on the field. Instead they talk tough garbage to the media.
    3) for the LT comment above, Taylor immediately waved for help when Theisman broke his leg and put his hands on his head in disbelief. There was no showboating.

  10. Osi will talk to Thibs about offering QB a hand up as he did when he played. If Thibs did that, he’d have known immediately to motion for help.

  11. I’m a Giants fan. I can forgive the snow angels as “I didn’t know”. The go to sleep act? No excuse, that was classless. The NFL won’t fine him, but I hope there is at least some kind of penalty from the team.

  12. I thought there was supposed to be penalties for landing with your full weight on the QB, or is that only for guys named Brady?

Either way, Thibodeaux may not have known initially but how long do you have to lay RIGHT NEXT to a guy (so much so that you’re hitting him with your snow angel arms) writhing in pain before you notice him?

As for people complaining that the Colts players didn’t do anything on the field… What were they supposed to do, grab Thibodeaux? And get a nice Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty?

  13. Probably didn’t know what was going on. But, where is the OL? And the teammate smacking him on the chest definitely knew Foles wasn’t right.

Different topic. I thought these new helmets were to help protect from head injuries? Back in the day there were obviously several concussions, but I’ve been watching the NFL for decades, and I don’t recall seeing guys convulse like Foles, Tua, and the Texans QB last year…

  14. For all of you ranting on KT.. Lighten up Francis !!! You wish he was on your team..As for Nick perfect time to say Im out of here.. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reminder that when LT broke Theisman’s leg, he was waving help in not making a fool of himself like this dude. Thibideaux is classless.

  16. Thibodeaux’s explanation does not have the ring of truth. Coach needs to have a talk with him before he becomes known as Ndamukong Thibodeaux. He turned his head and looked right at the guy and kept making snow angels! I understand it’s football but THAT’S not football.

  17. This kid needs to be sentenced to spending a month with Barry Sanders – Mr. Class himself. To paraphrase (when he scored a touchdown and just handed the ball to the ref), “Act like you’ve been there before and are coming back again”.
