The Bills have provided an update regarding the condition of safety Damar Hamlin.

“Damar Hamlin spent last night in the intensive care unit and remains there today in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center,” the team said on Twitter. “We are grateful and thankful for the outpouring of support we have received thus far.”

Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during Monday night’s game between the Bills and the Bengals. He received emergency treatment on the field, and he was transported by ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment.

The game was suspended, and the league has said it will not resume this week.

  1. I honestly believe that the lord with protect this young man and give him the strength to come through this.

  2. Keep fighting Damar – millions of fans around the world are praying for you!

  3. “Pill Hill” over there has some great medical facilities–he’s in really good hands.

  4. I have read that it is protocol to keep the brain cooled down for the first 24 hours after the event. This could explain why he remains in critical condition.

  5. No better support than the Bills Mafia. Now joined by not only fans of other teams, but celebrities and the entire world.

I’d love to see a percentage of all his jersey sales go to his foundation.

  6. So sad. The longer Hamlin remains in the ICU, the worse his prognosis likely is.

I saw a report that said that he is not breathing on his own, which is a sign that he may have brain damage or spinal damage.

Here’s wishing the best for Damar Hamlin.

  7. As a Vikes fan some of us still remember the Kory Stringer incident, the Bridgewater injury – I hate this being a fan of the NFL too. You keep fighting Damar its not a team vs team anymore, its a community all pulling for you to get make it!

    Blessed be young man

  8. I’m reminded of Al Lucas who died on the field during an Arena Football game nearly 20 years ago (spinal cord injury). I pray this young man pulls through.

He has a brain injury because he had no oxygen going to his brain for a sustained amount of time. Hence the CPR being executed for so long prior to ambulance leaving.

Seen way worse tackles and contact in the NFL than that hit……

  10. Prayers that this young man pulls through this. Last night Football stopped for me. This is a young man who has a proud Mother at the game watching her son live out his dream as one of the worlds best athletes. This is every parents nightmare, riding to the hospital wondering if her son will live or die. I don’t mean to vent but I can’t understand any of the thumbs down comments to the prayers or the suspension of the game. Seems heartless even if you are not a person of Faith. Even if it’s not your thing don’t bash others for praying for an amazing man whose life is in jeopardy playing a game for our entertainment. As a Dolphins fan since 1990 I’m now pulling for the Bills to win the Superbowl for Damar Hamlin and his family, teammates, and NFL friends!

  11. UC trauma unit is world renowned. He is in fantastic hands, we are praying hard for this young man in Cincinnati. Although we didnt need to be reminded how quickly everything can change, hopeful plenty of good comes from all this and Demar is up and at it soon living a good healthy life.

  12. A lot of what isn’t known is how long his heart wasn’t pumping. According a physician being interviewed this morning,… they need 48 hours to allow for the swelling in his brain to calm down and then check his other vital organs for any damage. The amount of time it took to restart his heart on the field is a critical factor to his recovery.

  13. I hope we all get some news of this young mans improved health situation soon. It has to be crushing for his family and friends to endure. I know I am checking regularly in hopes of seeing news of his improvement.

    Welcome to the internet!

  15. Seeing this young man pull through and make a full recovery would be better than any championship.

  16. People that want football this weekend are sick in the head ,I hope the NFLPA shuts it down the whole country would be behind them !

  17. I really don’t like the lack of any encouraging news. I hope its just the normal medical confidentiality process at work and not an indication of any lack of recovery.

  18. >The longer Hamlin remains in the ICU, the worse his prognosis likely is.

While true, he’s been there less than 24 hours. Being in ICU for a few days is common after a traumatic incident like this, especially if they are weaning him off his ventilation/sedation.

    >I saw a report that said that he is not breathing on his own, which is a sign that he may have brain damage or spinal damage.

Possibly, though it’s also likely they just intubated him as precaution given he required CPR/O2 at the scene. They’ll likely monitor his vent settings over the next couple days and wean as tolerated.

    >He has a brain injury because he had no oxygen going to his brain for a sustained amount of time. Hence the CPR being executed for so long prior to ambulance leaving.

He was hardly down that long. CPR was given almost immediately which itself provides oxygenated blood to the brain, so it’s pretty unlikely that he had any significant hypoxic brain injury.

  19. If the bills were playing Tampa and Brady needed to win to get to the playoffs, goodell would have 1 billion percent had the game restarted and set for Brady to win. These are the absolute facts and you all know it

  20. Trying to make sense of all of the initial confusion between the statement made by Joe Buck (on behalf of the League) and Troy Vincent on behalf of the NFL Players’ Association.

In the hours afterwards,, it’s been pretty much a unanimous response by all parties involved that the right decision was made to postpone the game- which would indicate that the players’ union basically prevailed in making the right call.

Take it for what it’s worth, but it was the UNION that once again made the difference for company employees.

  21. Pretty amazing that the man or woman making 55 k a year as an EMT ,quite possibly volunteering last night where more important than the Billion Dollar NFL machine !

  22. To all the internet medical experts out there please stop. You don’t have any idea of what’s really going on with Hamlin, none of you were there, none of you have seen any medical records, xrays, lab reports etc. I’ve been a Paramedic for 35 years and have ran 100’s of codes medical and trauma. They administered CPR immediately after his Cardiac functions ceased which is the absolute best situation you could have hoped for. He could quite possibly be in a medically indused coma, hence why he’s intubated. Until the physicians know what his neurological status is, no one can say what kind of outcome he’s going to have.

  23. why are posts wishing for a full recovery being downvoted, en masse, by people? I’m embarrassed to be a football fan

  24. Praying for the Hamlin Family in the mighty Name of JESUS CHRIST, Our LORD and SAVIOR for healing power 🙏 🙏 🙏

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Are you a Doctor, were you there timing how long he wasn’t being given CPR….NO to most likely both.

CPR started when the ambulance was called to the field, many minutes later from initial collapse.

I’m no doctor, but I know this from the Marines…..”the brain can withstand three to six minutes without oxygen before brain damage occurs.”

He very well may have been laying on the ground for 5 minutes and no CPR. There 3 or 4 commercials before the ambulance even left.

  26. >He has a brain injury because he had no oxygen going to his brain for a sustained amount of time. Hence the CPR being executed for so long prior to ambulance leaving.

    =========================== ====================== ================

I’m not trying to be a pessimist, but he definitely was not being given CPR until the ambulance arrived at least 10-15 minutes after he fainted or passed out.

  27. Am thinking the longer he is alive period.. sedated or not and breathing tube or not … is a good sign compared to the alternative if it was way worse, he’d already be dead .. will be interesting how they do the results of this game … play later, its a tie n mini bye leaving the other teams in the playoff n homefield hunt silently grumbling as while we all hope for the best for the young man .. the bidness of the league goes on and how can they make it fair to all teams involved.. as least they did the right thing last night calling the game .. but who over the next few days shall be aimed at for the coming blame. ???

  28. The next time you hear people bitch about how much money NFL players make, remind them that a player’s life can be changed forever, possibly terminated, in 3 seconds.

  29. The people that performed CPR to help save his life are not paid anywhere near what everyone watching from the either sideline get paid, yet they were the most valuable people on the field last night.

SHUT THE NFL DOWN THIS WEEKEND !!!!!!

Why? What will that accomplish? You can respect and pray for Damar without having to do a “show” of virtue signaling by shutting down a business.

Let’s face facts. The NFL is a business. A very BIG one. The livelihood of stadium workers, vendors, and a large host of other people who get their income from live games at the stadiums (it’s not just a broadcast) depends on these games. If a person died in a factory, a business would not “shut down” in a capacity that would incur Millions in losses to the Business.

I’m not trying to be insensitive in any way, just facing facts.

I believe you are wrong. They stated he was given CPR for 9 minutes. And then I think they used an AED device, restored his heartbeat and then was given oxygen.

So, unless you were just being clumsy with your wording and meant something else, I believe you are wrong. It was reported he IMMEDIATELY received CPR and they were doing it for 9 minutes.

Which the players on the field were witnessing, which is why there were freaking out.

  33. milehigh777
Not sure I follow the logic. That can happen in almost any blue collar job. And they don’t get “paid” a huge amount of money.

NFL players don’t get paid because they risk death. That is idiotic. This if the FIRST time in the NFL that this has happened.

It’s physical yes, but honestly not much more than HS or college football. It’s all relative.

I agree the players started to freak out when the CPR started right before the ambulance arrived. He was out there on the ground for a long time before the ambulance got there.

However, if the internal carotid arteries were both clotted….CPR would do nothing to help. CPR works for unblocked arteries, not foreign objects and clots.

  35. A perfectly healthy young man suffers cardiac arrest in an NFL game and needs CPR and an AED. This has never happened in the history of the game. What has changed in the last few years? I bet you can guess. Be prepared this may happen more frequently.

  36. Fire Bart Scott!!! Blaming Tee Higgins – poor kid is probably in the dumps as it is over this, and to go on national tv and claim he’s the reason this took place is pathetic. We haven’t even investigated pre-existing conditions, was a pre-game supplement taken that increases heart rate, was it the initial hit or fall… Too many questions for what Bart Scott did.

Dude just stop already, how much do you think a soldier, a firefighter or a cop makes a year? I’ve had people working construction killed while they were doing their job. Money has nothing to do with this, it was freak thing and for all you know it might not be football related at all.

  39. If you work for UPS an suffer a health related issue they clear you off the conveyor belt and the packages keep rolling !

  40. I am a doctor and I am hopeful. There was a report that his heartbeat was restored on the field after cpr and using the aed. If that is the case then his prognosis should be good. A lot of hospitals then cool the patient for 24 hours. This is to limit the damage to the organs. In order to do that you have to sedate the patient. If all that happened then he will probably be taken off sedation tonight. He could make a full recovery if there weren’t other complications. Not sure that is the case but am hopeful based on the info released so far.

  41. We won’t know about Hamlin’s status until at least 9pm, tonight.

Hamlin was intubated and put in a medically induced coma. They also lowered his body temperature to help reduce and damage to the brain. This is standard procedure. They usually let the patient recover for 24 hours before warming them up and bringing them out of the coma. That will be around 9pm tonight

The critical part of this is how quickly Hamlin was defibrillated,as others here have mentioned.

  42. Pull through brother. Wishing you nothing but positive thoughts and prayers up for a full recovery.

  45. I have gone through cardiac arrest. My brother did compressions on me until the EMT arrived. They put me on a ventilator and in a medical induced coma. When I came out I could not remember what happened, in fact I could not remember about two months prior. They put a defibrillator in my chest. I had heart problems for 9 years before I received a heart transplant. This young man has a long road ahead.

    ——
The treatment for cardiac arrest is to chill the body through cold
iv for 48 hours. In order to keep the body from shivering they have to sedate (paralyze) the patient. Because of that they have help him breathe. They won’t know the full extent of the damage until doctors start to warm him up.

  50. you’renotcriticallythinkingwhichwillbeyourdemise
So, what doofus? You think they just “STOPPED” doing CPR for no reason after 9 minutes?

Think it through Einstein. The did it until they restored his heartbeat. That’s it. They didn’t STOP giving him CPR, wait around by the corpse for an hour and then cart him off.

Man, you cannot read or understand a damn thing.

  51. I downvote every person whining about down votes. Just speak your piece and quit worrying about what others think and do.
How long are we going to pretend this isn’t related to something that sounds like Maxine which is well known to cause heart issues?

  52. Another reason for the induced coma is head injury. When he fell back he hit his head hard. They induce this a lot with head trauma

  53. It’s gotta be a brain stem issue right? That’s what controls all instinctual and involuntary body actions. Like heart beats.
The JJ Watt news and this so close seems like a pattern we’ve yet to be informed. To the sounds like Maxine people, we don’t know what choice he made so seems like a reach. To the prayers, praying isn’t medicate treatment. The kid needs medical treatment and technology. Terrible situation.

  54. I am constantly searching for good news on Damar. I can’t imagine how hard his family is going through this difficult situation. My prayers go out to this young man an his family. Much props go on how how the nfl and positive fans showing support instead of debating on nonsense about this horrific conditions.

We all know within the brotherhood of the league that Damar would want his team to get back out there and win, and the team wants to win it for Damar now. Anyone who spews negative garbage about how the NFL handled this (they are the reason he’s alive at this point) or the media, doesn’t care about the NFL or Damar one lick, but rather they are using this as an opportunity to attack the ‘system’ our country, our sport etc. full stop.

Who cares if they shut the game down or not. Pretty sure everyone agrees that was the right decision at the time.

  59. Praying for a full recovery for this young man. Puts football in it’s proper place, though, and shows us how it really isn’t so important after all. None of us know when our heart could stop beating either. There’s only one way to know where you’re going when you die and that is to put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ. His death on the cross paid for our sins and all we have to do is accept his payment and believe on Him alone for salvation. He is the only one worth living for and He will give you peace in any situation.
