Broncos spend $400,000 on new field, for one game

As they cap a lost season on Sunday, the Denver Broncos will find themselves on a new field.

Via Mike Klis of 9News.com, the Broncos have spent $400,000 to install a new playing surface. For one game. And one game only. By next year, another new surface will be installed.

The decision was spurred by wear and tear on the surface installed before the season. The field had bare spots and generally failed to meet the standard that new ownership hopes to set.

It’s a powerful message regarding the willingness (and obvious ability) of the Walton-Penner group to spend as needed to make the team as good as it can be. The next major expenditure will relate to the hiring of a new coach.

Comments from CEO Greg Penner and G.M. George Paton at the press conference after the firing of coach Nathaniel Hackett also made it clear that the Broncos will spend the time and money needed to get to the root cause of a rash of injuries. Too many organizations chalk injuries up to bad luck, without fully exploring every nook and cranny of the operation.

The Broncos will devote all resources necessary to fixing the injury issue. Starting with spending $400,000 to ensure that the players will have the safest possible playing surface for one game.

It’s a powerful message by the new kids on the NFL’s block regarding the right way to run a team.

  1. Broncos owners:

    1) Pay their franchise players
    2) Provide the best conditions possible with no exception
    3) Don’t quit on the players
    4) Let’s the GM operate

Petty haters can hate all they want. This season was a warmup. Broncos are gonna be legit for the foreseeable future.

  2. Play on the old field, give the $400K to the United Way. That’s a wiser expenditure of such a sizable sum.

  3. As an objective, neutral fan – Denver needs to be competitive. They, along with the patriots have been to more superbowls than any team. They have gone 41 yrs without a back to back winning season, which is pretty remarkable. Denver and the Patriots should be Americas teams, while teams like Dallas and the Raiders are living off the past. It is unbecoming for that franchise to be in the basement for what, 5 yrs in a row. Now they have the richest owners in the league to stabilize that franchise

  4. People rip the artificial turfs for injuries but the broncos have had a ton of injuries on their game day and practice grass fields this year and in years past. Vikings lost 2 guys last week for the season to lower leg injuries on lambeau grass. I’d like to see updates data on grass vs turf lower leg injuries.

  5. A sign of things to come with Walmart money.

Thing is, everyone on this forum is paying for it.

  6. I don’t buy it. You don’t accumulate billions of dollars by foolishly throwing money around.

  7. I seriously believe that all this lighter gear and wearing less safety gear is contributing to many of these injuries. The players are bigger, faster and now carry less gear weight than ever. Just compare today’s players with just 20 years ago. The visual difference is amazing. If you want injuries to go down… make every player wear proper pads and equipment. We’d rather look sleek and stylish than wear proper padding. Are bad fields causing all these injuries? I doubt it

  8. How wealthy the owner is so overrated. There is a salary cap, have to draft right players, sign the right free agents, trade for the correct players. Which they have shown they are lousy at. Gimme a break about the owners deep pockets.

  9. Glad to read that they’re going to take player safety more seriously. This is a nice start. Let’s see how they follow up.

  10. They, along with the patriots have been to more superbowls than any team.

Actually Dallas and the Steelers have been to same number and they both have better records than the broncos..
And the pats tied Pitt with 6 win..
They also had many back to back winning seasons in the last 41 years…
    Watch much football?!!

LOL, you salty. Money makes the world go round. Look at the Raiders, unable to fire their own coach cause they can’t afford it. The only “limitation” to the wealth of an owner is the salary cap, and that’s a mere front to help GMs negotiate contracts lower. It’s proven how easily manipulated it is by those with straight cash. You’ll learn when that winning streak ends next year. Hope you enjoyed it breh.

Imagine thinking money doesn’t matter in the NFL! 🤡 Money is the ONLY thing that matters.

  12. And REREAD what I said about Dallas, so your counter is moot. Last time they’ve been to a bowl is before you were probably even alive. Meanwhile Denver has been to another 4 and won 3 the last time Dallas has even been to a Super Bowl. Keep fighting the good fight tho guy. The point still stands that Denver is historically, a minimum, a top 5 all time NFL franchise

    3-5 overall

And if it wasn’t for Terrell Davis and a scared Cam Newton, they would have never won any championships.

  14. It’s not going happen to help Russell’s future and also still playing unwatchable games anyway.
